A low ink sensing system is combined with an ink cartridge detection system to enable a more efficient ink jet printer. An ink container which supplies ink to an associated printhead is modified by the incorporation of two light directing elements, in the preferred embodiment, a faceted prism and a roof mirror, into a transparent wall of the container housing. The cartridge, comprising the ink container and associated printhead, is mounted on a scan carriage. Periodically, the carriage is conveyed to a sensing station comprising a pair of light sources and a commonly used photosensor. A first light source is energized and a beam of light is directed to a location where the roof mirror, would be positioned if the cartridge is present. If the cartridge is absent, lack of a reflected return signal is sensed, indicating a cartridge has not been inserted. Print operation is halted until a cartridge is inserted. If a cartridge is properly inserted, the roof mirror returns most of the incident light to the photosensor which generates a signal indicating the presence of the cartridge. A second light source is then energized and directed towards the faceted prism, which is either immersed in ink or exposed to air within the interior of the container. If the latter, light is internally reflected by the prism facets back to the photosensor. If a print operation has been in progress, and the ink level has fallen, the common photosensor detects either a strong or weak redirected light component and initiates a status check and generates appropriate displays of low ink level or out of ink warnings.

The present invention provides a thin film write head having an upper and lower pole structures and conductor turns forming a winding for generating magnetic flux. The conductor is formed with a non-planar top surface. The winding of the present invention may be formed of lower and upper turns. The upper turns may be formed with a non-planar top surface, a non-planar bottom surface, or both. It is preferred that the bottom surface of the upper conductor turns be coherent with the non-planar top surface of the lower conductor turns. The non-planar top surface may be formed by removing corners formed during deposition between a generally planar top surface and abutting side walls. The corners may be removed by ion milling to form the non-planar top surface. The conductor may be copper with the non-planar top surface having sloping facets. A system, computer program, and method for organizing and managing data structures including based on input from a feedback agent is provided, the method including: (a) a method for faceted classification that is applicable to a domain of information, said method of faceted classification including: (i) a facet analysis of said domain or receiving the results of facet analysis of the domain; and (ii) applying a faceted classification synthesis of said domain; and (b) a complex-adaptive method for selecting and returning information, on one or more iterations, from said faceted classification synthesis, said complex-adaptive method varying the organizing and managing of data structures in response to said returned information. A system and method for faceted classification of a domain of information is also provided that includes providing a faceted data set including facet attributes with which to classify information, such facet attributes including optionally facet attribute hierarchies for the facet attributes; (b) providing a dimensional concept taxonomy in which the facet attributes are assigned to objects of the domain to be classified in accordance with concepts that associate meaning to the objects, said concepts being represented by concept definitions defined using said facet attributes and associated with the objects in the dimensional concept taxonomy, said dimensional concept taxonomy expressing dimensional concept relationships between the concept definitions in accordance with the faceted data set; and (c) providing or enabling a complex-adaptive system for selecting and returning dimensional concept taxonomy information to vary the faceted data set and dimensional concept taxonomy in response to the dimensional concept taxonomy information. In another aspect of the method of the present invention the method for faceted classification of the domain of information further includes performing faceted classification synthesis to relate a set of concepts represented by concept definitions defined in accordance with a faceted data set including facet attributes, and optionally facet attribute hierarchies. The invention also provides a computer system for enabling a user to manipulate dimensional concept relationships. A further aspect of the system is a system for organizing and managing data structures including based on input from a feedback agent, in which the system includes or is linked to a complex-adaptive system for selecting and returning dimensional concept taxonomy information to vary a faceted data set and a dimensional concept taxonomy in response to dimensional concept taxonomy information, the dimensional concept taxonomy expressing dimensional concept relationships between the concept definitions in accordance with the faceted data set.

A graphical user interface is for building Boolean queries and viewing search results using search cells, combination cells, a toolbar, and a menu bar. The search cells are movable within a workspace and preferably contain a text field, a facet type designation, an advanced button and a hit count. Search cells can search records by a category, keyword, date or numeric value. Categories are preferably chosen with the assistance of a category walker. The combination cells are movable within the workspace and preferably contain a combine icon, a hit count and an expression field. The combination cell is a Boolean combination of two or more selected search cells. The contents of each combination bracket is controllable by the use of movable graphical pins that are located between each pair of search cells.
