Sensing system for detecting presence of an ink container and level of ink therein

A low ink sensing system is combined with an ink cartridge detection system to enable a more efficient ink jet printer. An ink container which supplies ink to an associated printhead is modified by the incorporation of two light directing elements, in the preferred embodiment, a faceted prism and a roof mirror, into a transparent wall of the container housing. The cartridge, comprising the ink container and associated printhead, is mounted on a scan carriage. Periodically, the carriage is conveyed to a sensing station comprising a pair of light sources and a commonly used photosensor. A first light source is energized and a beam of light is directed to a location where the roof mirror, would be positioned if the cartridge is present. If the cartridge is absent, lack of a reflected return signal is sensed, indicating a cartridge has not been inserted. Print operation is halted until a cartridge is inserted. If a cartridge is properly inserted, the roof mirror returns most of the incident light to the photosensor which generates a signal indicating the presence of the cartridge. A second light source is then energized and directed towards the faceted prism, which is either immersed in ink or exposed to air within the interior of the container. If the latter, light is internally reflected by the prism facets back to the photosensor. If a print operation has been in progress, and the ink level has fallen, the common photosensor detects either a strong or weak redirected light component and initiates a status check and generates appropriate displays of low ink level or out of ink warnings.

Enhanced mobility CMOS transistors with a v-shaped channel with self-alignment to shallow trench isolation

The present invention provides structures and methods for a transistor formed on a V-shaped groove. The V-shaped groove contains two crystallographic facets joined by a ridge. The facets have different crystallographic orientations than what a semiconductor substrate normally provides such as the substrate orientation or orientations orthogonal to the substrate orientation. Unlike the prior art, the V-shaped groove is formed self-aligned to the shallow trench isolation, eliminating the need to precisely align the V-shaped grooves with lithographic means. The electrical properties of the new facets, specifically, the enhanced carrier mobility, are utilized to enhance the performance of transistors. In a transistor with a channel on the facets that are joined to form a V-shaped profile, the current flows in the direction of the ridge joining the facets avoiding any inflection in the direction of the current.

The present invention provides a thin film write head having an upper and lower pole structures and conductor turns forming a winding for generating magnetic flux. The conductor is formed with a non-planar top surface. The winding of the present invention may be formed of lower and upper turns. The upper turns may be formed with a non-planar top surface, a non-planar bottom surface, or both. It is preferred that the bottom surface of the upper conductor turns be coherent with the non-planar top surface of the lower conductor turns. The non-planar top surface may be formed by removing corners formed during deposition between a generally planar top surface and abutting side walls. The corners may be removed by ion milling to form the non-planar top surface. The conductor may be copper with the non-planar top surface having sloping facets. The thin film write head of the present invention may be utilized to provide an improved data storage and retrieval apparatus. The preferred embodiment provides reduced coil resistance thereby reducing Johnson Thermal Noise and power dissipation. It also allows for reduced yoke length and reduced stack height while providing low apex angles to expand and improve yoke material deposition thereby improving head response and operational frequency.

A backlight apparatus has a collimating waveguide with a light input end, a top surface, a bottom surface, opposing sides, a far end opposite the light input end, and a total internal reflection critical angle for the material of the waveguide. A plurality of first facets are formed in the bottom surface distributed along the waveguide between the light input end and the far end. Each of the first facets has a first facet bottom surface which converges toward the top surface in a direction away from the far end relative to the top surface. A light scattering and reflective surface is disposed adjacent the far end of the collimating waveguide. The first facet bottom surfaces cause light rays entering the light input end to be totally internally reflected to the far end of the collimating waveguide wherein the scattering and reflective surface at the far end reflects and scatters light rays incident thereon back toward the light input end. The first facet bottom surfaces then cause the light rays reflected from the far end to exit the top surface. The first facet bottom surfaces may be formed either as straight facets or as curved surface facets and may also be alternatively formed having a reflective material layer thereon.
