Alumina insulation for coating implantable components and other microminiature devices

A protective, biocompatible coating or encapsulation material protects and insulates a component or device intended to be implanted in living tissue. The coating or encapsulation material comprises a thin layer or layers of alumina, zirconia or other ceramic, less than 25 microns thick, e.g., 5-10 microns thick. The alumina layer(s) may be applied at relatively low temperature. Once applied, the layer provides excellent hermeticity, and prevents electrical leakage. Even though very thin, the alumina layer retains excellent insulating characteristics. In one embodiment, an alumina layer less than about 6 microns thick provides an insulative coating that exhibits less than 10 pA of leakage current over an area 75 mils by 25 mils area while soaking in a saline solution at temperatures up to 80° C. over a three month period.

Power over Ethernet-prioritized active splitter

A POE (power over Ethernet)-prioritized active splitter is disclosed for a prioritized network having different priorities such as a network security system that uses an intelligent POE power supply with a prioritized back-up response, allowing a lower cost UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system to be used, and also providing a longer back-up time period by the UPS system for more critical components of the security system. A simple embodiment operates with only two priority levels, a high priority level for more critical components of the, such as the cable modem, the system router, fire alarm devices, local warning devices and the alarm communicator, while less critical components are supplied with electrical power at the low priority level. In the event of a power outage or disconnection, the critical high priority components remain connected to the Ethernet network to be supplied with electrical power by the UPS system and also to communicate over the twisted wire pairs of the Ethernet network.

Implantable medical device for measuring mechanical heart function

An implantable device for measuring mechanical heart function of selected heart chambers using a heart contraction detection system that includes a magnetic field sensor. The system may be used for monitoring signs of acute or chronic cardiac heart failure, to enable diagnosis of the condition of the heart, to prescribe appropriate therapies, and to assess delivered pacing therapies. Distance measurements within the heart are made using the magnetic field sensor which is implanted at a sensor site in or on one of the right or left ventricle. A magnet implanted at a site relative to the other of the left or right heart ventricle is sufficiently spaced at a distance that fluctuates with expansion and contraction of the ventricles. The magnetic field sensor provides a sensor output signal having a signal magnitude proportional to the magnetic field strength of the magnet, and which is indicative of changing cardiac dimensions.

Stent to be placed in vivo

As a treatment for angiostenosis, angioplasty (PTA or PTCA) of expanding a small-sized balloon in a vessel has been commonly conducted. However, this treatment easily causes repeated stenosis (restenosis) after the treatment. Placement of a stent in a vessel is also effective in decreasing restenosis, but this treatment may also cause restenosis. The present invention provides a stent containing a poly (lactide-co-glycolide) or both a poly (lactide-co-glycolide) and an immunosuppressive agent in at least a portion of a surface of the stent, and further containing a material nondegradable in vivo.

In situ polymerization for hair treatment

InactiveUS20080066773A1Effective for long period of timeImprove hair strengthCosmetic preparationsHair removalSolubilityIn situ polymerization
Hair care products represent a world-wide multi-billion dollar industry. Pre-formed polymers are commonly used in a variety of hair care products including shampoos, conditioners, gels, and hair sprays. The present invention provides technology for polymerizing monomers on hair in situ to produce desired hair characteristics. This eliminates the solubility and application issues found with some polymers. The polymerization of monomers on hair is typically initiated using a thermal or photoinitiatied free radical initiator. In certain embodiments, the monomers are fluorinated thereby producing a fluorinated polymer on the hair upon polymerization. The invention provides monomers, initiators, methods, and kits for use in treating hair with polymers.

Smoking device including a flowmeter

A waste-material entry prevention member arranged upstream of a flow sensor is a rod- or plate-like member protruding halfway across the cross-section of a flow passage. Hence, vortexes or energy of the vortexes produced in fluid flowing by the waste-material entry prevention member is diffused by a stream of the fluid passing through a space left between the waste-material entry prevention member and the wall surface of the flow passage which the waste-material entry prevention member faces. Thus, production of vortexes is held down. Further, by making the flow sensor generate heat or heating the flow sensor, thermophoresis of the fluid is caused near the surface of the flow sensor. By this, particles contained in the fluid are prevented from accumulating on the flow sensor.

Phase contrast microscope for short wavelength radiation and imaging method

A phase contrast x-ray microscope has a phase plate that is placed in proximity of and attached rigidly to the objective to form a composite optic. This enables easier initial and long-term maintenance of alignment of the microscope. In one example, they are fabricated on the same high-transmissive substrate. The use of this composite optic allows for lithographic-based alignment that will not change over the lifetime of the instrument. Also, in one configuration, the phase plate is located between the test object and the objective.

Adaptive phase contrast microscope

An optical microscope is provided with an adjustable optical phase ring. The adjustable ring provides a way to compensate for distortion in the visible phase ring before the light reaches the sample. In an inverted microscope, when observing transparent cells under a liquid, the visible light phase ring is distorted. By the use of a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) in place of a fixed ring, the projected ring is adjusted to realign the light and produce phase. In a typical micro plate, the meniscus formed produces a lens effect that is realigned by providing changes in the position and pattern, to allow phase imaging over a wider portion of the well. The realignment of the ring can be manual or automated and can be dynamically adjusted based upon an observed image of the sample.
