Disclosed is a sustained release lipid pre-concentrate, comprising: a) a sorbitan unsaturated fatty acid ester having a polar head with at least two or more —OH (hydroxyl) groups; b) a phospholipid; and c) a liquid crystal hardener, free of an ionizable group, having a hydrophobic moiety of 15 to 40 carbon atoms with a triacyl group or a carbon ring structure. The lipid pre-concentrate exists as a liquid phase in the absence of aqueous fluid and forms into a liquid crystal in the presence of aqueous fluid. Also, a pharmaceutical composition further comprising a pharmacologically active ingredient plus the pre-concentrate is provided.

A method for treating a fatty acid methyl ester. The method can include mixing the fatty acid methyl ester with an amount of urea and an amount of alcohol to make (i) a urea / fatty acid methyl ester ratio of from about 0 wt / wt to about 1 wt / wt and (ii) an alcohol / fatty acid methyl ester ratio of from about 4 vol / wt to about 8 vol / wt, heating the fatty acid methyl ester / urea / alcohol mixture to a temperature at which a homogenous mixture is obtained, cooling the fatty acid methyl ester / urea / alcohol mixture to a temperature where a solid phase and a liquid phase are formed, and separating the solid phase from the liquid phase.

Method for separating saturated and unsaturated fatty acid esters and use of separated fatty acid esters

The present invention provides a composition comprising methyl esters derived from vegetable oils having less than about 3% by weight of saturated fatty acid methyl esters and a cloud point of less than about −30° C. A method for making the lowered cloud point composition is also disclosed in which vegetable derived methyl esters, urea and alcohol are mixed under sufficient heat to form a homogenous mixture. The mixture is then cooled to a temperature where a solid phase and a liquid phase are formed. The solid phase is enriched in saturated fatty acid methyl esters and the liquid phase is enriched in unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters. The solid phase is separated from the liquid phase. Finally, unused urea and methanol are removed from the liquid phase to form a liquid composition having a cloud point of less than about −30° C. and less than about 3% by weight saturated fatty acid methyl esters.

The invention relates to a method for preparing phosphatidylserine abundant in polyunsaturated fatty acid and belongs to the technical field of bioengineering. The method is characterized by comprising the following steps of: firstly, catalyzing ester exchange reaction between phosphatide and polyunsaturated fatty acid ester by utilizing one or a mixture of phosphatidase A and lipase to generate phosphatide abundant in polyunsaturated fatty acid; and then catalyzing phosphor-transfer esterification reaction between the phosphatide abundant in the polyunsaturated fatty acid and L-serine by utilizing phosphatidase D to generate the phosphatidylserine abundant in the polyunsaturated fatty acid. The method has the advantages of no discharge of waste water, good product quality, no solvent residue, safe process operation, few reaction byproducts, no waste generation, cost reduction, simple production process and easy realization of scale production because of utilizing two enzymes to perform sub-step catalysis and perform reaction in the same reactor, and completing the reaction process in a non-solvent system. Therefore, the invention provides a good and feasible method for preparing the phosphatidylserine abundant in the polyunsaturated fatty acid.

Fatty acid esters, such as the unsaturated fatty acid esters of sterols and / or stanols, are used as a replacement for a substantial portion or all of the undesirable saturated and trans-unsaturated fats used as structure giving hardstocks in edible foods such as margarines, mayonnaise, cooking oils, cheeses, butter and shortening. Because of the similarity in the crystallinity and physical properties of the esters to those of the undesirable hardstock fats, the substitution or replacement contributes favorably to the flavor, texture and other sensory properties of the foods. Only the fatty acid portion of the phytosterol esters defined herein as texturizing agent is digested or absorbed with the sterol part being unabsorbable, thereby resulting in a reduction in total caloric uptake. Furthermore, the phytosterol fatty acid esters reduce the absorption of both dietary and biliary cholesterol from the digestive tract, thereby lowering the blood serum cholesterol level, especially the LDL-cholesterol.
