A block-cipher based encryption scheme providing both privacy and authenticity that encrypts an arbitrary-length message into a minimal-length ciphertext. In one embodiment, “OCB”, a message is encrypted using a nonce by partitioning it into 128-bit message blocks and a possibly shorter message fragment. A sequence of offsets is computed from the nonce and block cipher using shifts and conditional xors. Each message block is xored with an offset, enciphered, and xored with the offset, yielding a ciphertext block. The length of the message fragment is encoded, xored with an offset, enciphered to give a pad, truncated, and xored with the message fragment to give a ciphertext fragment. A checksum is formed by xoring the message blocks, the padded ciphertext fragment, and the pad. It is xored with an offset and enciphered to yield a tag. The ciphertext is the ciphertext blocks, the ciphertext fragment, and the tag.

The invention relates to a method and a system for determining the orientation of an external magnetic field by means of giant magneto-resistor (GMR) sensors. A sensor circuit is provided with two or more sub-circuits each having two GMR sensors connected in series. Three respective sensor voltages are obtained and a scaling factor is determined from differences in these voltages. An external magnetic field orientation is determined based on a scaling factor applied to the difference voltages. The inventive method enables signals from the GRM sensors to be reprocessed easily in order to compensate the temperature dependence of the signals.

Method for instantaneous frequency measurement

This invention discloses a method of instantaneous frequency measurement. The frequency band of interest is divided into a number of virtual sub-bands. Each sub-band is folded into a common baseband by a band folding down converter. Frequency measurement is achieved in a two part process, part 1 determines the center frequency of the virtual sub-band, while part 2 determines the baseband frequency, the frequency within the virtual sub-band. Both components of the RF frequency are then combined to form the frequency measurement. The frequency determinations for both sub-band frequency and baseband frequency are made by digital processing of the baseband phase measurements. The baseband phase is measured by a multi bit phase sampler, an integral part of the invention.
