Wireless sensor reader

A wireless sensor reader is provided to interface with a wireless sensor. The wireless sensor reader transmits a narrowband, fixed frequency excitation pulse to cause the wireless sensor to generate a ring signal. The ring signal corresponds to the value of the physical parameter being sensed. The wireless sensor reader receives and amplifies the ring signal and sends the signal to a phase-locked loop. A voltage-controlled oscillator in the phase-locked loop locks onto the ring signal frequency and generates a count signal at a frequency related to the ring signal frequency. The voltage-controlled oscillator is placed into a hold mode where the control voltage is maintained constant to allow the count signal frequency to be determined. The low power, simple circuitry required to generate the excitation pulse allows the reader to be a small, battery operated unit. Alternative methods of frequency determination are also disclosed.

Iterative CDMA phase and frequency acquisition

A system and method is provided that searches for the frequency and phase of a CDMA transmission in an iterative manner. With its automatic frequency control (AFC) disabled, the receiving system performs a coarse search for the transmitter's CDMA phase at a nominal receiving frequency. When the coarse phase is obtained, the AFC is invoked with a large-range pull-in, to obtain an initial, coarse frequency that is likely to be closer to the transmitter's frequency than the initial nominal frequency. At this coarse frequency, the receiving system repeats its search for the transmitter's CDMA phase, starting at the previously determined coarse phase. Because this second phase determination is conducted in the presence of less frequency error, it provides for a more accurate phase determination. The AFC is again invoked, but with a small-range pull-in, to obtain a finer frequency determination. Because the finer frequency determination is conducted in the presence of less phase error, a substantial improvement in the accuracy and precision of the frequency determination can be achieved. To achieve this more accurate phase and frequency determination within the same time duration as a conventional acquisition process, the initial coarse phase determination is conducted using a rapid, albeit less accurate, process than the conventional phase determination.

System and method for programming oscillators

A system and method for programming a digitally tunable oscillator is provided. A desired output frequency is received. A tuning effect of a set of digital tuning words on a crystal resonant frequency is determined, and valid parameters of an algorithm for translating and tuning the crystal resonant frequency to a value within an error tolerance of the desired frequency, based on the determined tuning effect are calculated. Valid parameters are preferably calculated based on an intermediate tuning value, sorted by ascending divide parameter of the algorithm, and then evaluated in sorted order for ability of a tuning effect to null frequency error to within the error tolerance. The valid set of calculated parameters are then programmed into a nonvolatile memory. The oscillator control parameters may remain unprogrammed until all necessary parameters are defined. Because the device may be programmed in a single step, without intermediate presumption of nominal crystal frequency, the final plate process may be unnecessary. A high accuracy may be obtained by searching through the complete set of available parameters for a set that meets a frequency and tolerance specification. The oscillator is preferably a Cypress CY2037 device alone or in combination with a Micro Analog Systems MAS1175 device.
