An optical sensor diagnostic system utilizes a tunable Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) that incorporates an integrated MEMS tuning mechanism provides variable wavelength light into an optical fiber with improved wavelength scanning speed and greater simplicity of construction. Sensors, such as Bragg gratings, are disposed along the fiber in the light path. Each sensor reflects or transmits light exhibiting a characteristic amplitude and / or phase feature with respect to wavelength, the wavelength position of which is affected by an environmental stimulus imposed thereon. The light reflected or transmitted through each sensor is mixed with light passed through an optical reference path and then converted to an electrical signal by a simple detector and monitored by circuitry that applies signal processing to the detected power spectral distribution, by this means providing output signals indicative of the environmental stimulus on each sensor.

Wavelength tunable laser

A wavelength tunable laser comprising a laser diode and a closed external cavity formed by one or more optical resonators either horizontally or vertically coupled to adjacent waveguides. The optical resonator primarily functions as a wavelength selector and may be in the form of disk, ring or other closed cavity geometries. The emission from one end of the laser diode is coupled into the first waveguide using optical lens or butt-joint method and transferred to the second waveguide through evanescent coupling between the waveguides and optical resonator. A mirror system or high reflection coating at the end of the second waveguide reflects the light backwards into the system resulting in a closed optical cavity. Lasing can be achieved when the optical gain overcomes the optical loss in this closed cavity for a certain resonance wavelength which is tunable by changing the resonance condition of the optical resonator through reversed biased voltage or current injection. Multiple optical resonators may be used to reduce the lasing threshold and provide higher power output. With monolithic integration, more optical devices can be integrated with the tunable laser into the same substrate to produce optical devices that are capable of more complex functions, such as tunable transmitters or waveguide buses.

A fuzzy logic control arrangement is provided for an impedance match network of the type that is typically employed between a source of RF power at a given impedance, e.g., 50 ohms, and a non-linear load whose impedance can vary in magnitude and phase, e.g., an RF plasma. The fuzzy logic controller fuzzifies the phase and the magnitude error signals. The error signals are applied to a fuzzy logic interference function based on a number of fuzzy sets. The values of the error signals enjoy some degree of membership in one or more fuzzy sets. Fuzzy logic rules are applied to the phase and magnitude error signals. In a defuzzification stage, drive signal values are obtained for moving the tuning elements of the variable impedances. The drive signal values are weighted according to respective fuzzy inference functions for which the error signals enjoy membership. Then the weighted drive signal values are combined to produce output drive signals.
