Diamond electrodes for electrochemical devices

A bulk boron doped diamond electrode comprising a plurality of grooves disposed in a surface of the bulk boron doped diamond electrode. The bulk boron doped diamond electrode is formed by growing a bulk boron doped diamond electrode using a chemical vapour deposition technique and forming a plurality of grooves in a surface of the bulk boron doped diamond electrode. According to one arrangement, the plurality of grooves are formed by forming a pattern of carbon solvent metal over a surface of the bulk boron doped diamond electrode and heating whereby the carbon solvent metal dissolves underlying diamond to form grooves in the surface of the bulk boron doped electrode. The invention also relates to an electrochemical cell comprising one or more grooved bulk boron doped diamond electrodes. The or each bulk boron doped diamond electrode is oriented within the electrochemical device such that the grooves are aligned in a direction substantially parallel to a direction of electrolyte flow.

Method of Coating for Diamond Electrode

The present invention relates to a film-formation method of a diamond electrode used in an electrolytic processing apparatus and other devices for treating water and waste liquid. This method utilizes CVD such as hot filament CVD including supplying a high-concentration carbon source to form a low-quality thick first diamond film (1) on a substrate at a high rate, and then supplying a low-concentration carbon source to form a high-quality thin second diamond film (2) on the first film at a low rate. This structure can prevent oxidation corrosion due to OH radical and can prevent entry of an electrolytic solution into the film, thereby enhancing durability of the diamond film. The thick first diamond film is formed at a high rate, and the second diamond film is made thin at a low rate. Therefore, a total film-formation time can be short, and a low-cost diamond electrode can be made.

Carbonized charcoal electrode

An apparatus (1) for use of carbonized charcoal powder as an electrode is provided. Charcoal is provided as a powder, carbonized, and placed in a container (16) by which compressive pressure is applied to the carbonized-charcoal powder via one or more sides of the container (16). As a result of the compressive pressure the packed-bed (11) of carbonized-charcoal powder manifests a resistivity of less than about 1 ohm-cm and is suitable for use as an electrode in a fuel cell, battery or electrolyzer. The apparatus is adapted with electrical contacts (8, 9, 10) to conduct electric flow to or from the electrode and adapted for communication of an electrolyte with the electrode.
