High frequency and multi frequency band ultrasound transducers based on ceramic films

A design and a manufacturing method of ultrasound transducers based on films of ferro-electric ceramic material is presented, the transducers being particularly useful for operating at frequencies above 10 MHz. The designs also involve acoustic load matching layers that provides particularly wide bandwidth of the transducers, and also multiple electric port transducers using multiple piezoelectric layers, for multi-band operation of the transducers over an even wider band of frequencies that covers ~4 harmonics of a fundamental band. A transceiver drive system for the multi-port transducers that provides simple selection of the frequency bands of transmitted pulses as well as transmission of multi-band pulses, and reception of scattered signals in multiple frequency bands, is presented. The basic designs can be used for elements in a transducer array, that provides all the features of the single element transducer for array steering of the focus and possibly also direction of a pulsed ultrasound beam at high frequencies and multi-band frequencies. The manufacturing technique can involve tape-casting of the ceramic films, deposition of the ceramic films onto a substrate with thick film printing, sol-gel, or other deposition techniques, where manufacturing methods for load matching layers and composite ceramic layers are described.

A method and apparatus for combining therapeutic pulsed or continuous-wave ultrasound with diagnostic pulsed ultrasound are described. In both a therapeutic mode and in a diagnostic mode, the ultrasound is administered from a single probe to a patient suffering from thrombosis. The ultrasound can have the same or different frequency ranges in the diagnostic and therapeutic modes. The pulsed or continuous-wave ultrasound in the therapeutic mode enhances a lysing effect of a thrombolytic agent. The pulsed ultrasound in the diagnostic mode allows monitoring of blood flow to locate a thrombus, to determine an optimal window to administer the therapeutic pulsed ultrasound, and to detect when recanalization has occurred. If an operator attends the device, a graphical display operates during the diagnostic mode to display an image representative of the blood flow.

A system and method of performing ultrasound modulated optical tomography. Ultrasound is delivered into a target voxel in an anatomical structure, and sample light is delivered into the anatomical structure, whereby a portion of the sample light passing through the target voxel is scattered by the biological tissue as signal light, and a portion of the sample light not passing through the target voxel is scattered by the anatomical structure as background light. The ultrasound and sample light are pulsed in synchrony, such that only the signal light is frequency shifted by the ultrasound. Multiple pulses of the sample light are delivered into the anatomical structure for each pulse of the ultrasound delivered into the target voxel. Reference light is combined with the signal light and background light to generate an interference light pattern, which is sequentially modulated to generate different interference light patterns, which are detected.

The method comprises the steps of: acquiring aliasing signals formed by interface reflection echoes from water and an upper surface of the thin layer as well as from the water and a lower surface of the thin layer by using a pulsed ultrasound water logging echo system, acquiring an upper surface echo signal of a standard test block, performing FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) on the two signals respectively, and performing further processing to obtain the sound pressure reflection coefficient power spectrum; and then, performing low-pass filtering and band-pass filtering on the power spectrum to solve relevant coefficients in a power spectrum expression, and substituting the coefficients into an equation to solve the acoustic impedance of the thin layer. The method disclosed by the invention can be used for solving the acoustic impedance at the same time under the condition that any parameters of the thin layer are unknown, and the defect that part of parameters of the thin layer need to be known to obtain other parameters in the prior art is overcome.

On the basis of not changing the basic process of preparing the ginger leaching liquid, the in-vitro circulatory pulsed ultrasound wave aiding measures are applied, thereby improving the utilization rate of the ginger, shortening the extraction time, saving the use amount of the extraction solvent and bringing high economic, social and environmental benefits.

Method and apparatus for echolocation

Method and apparatus for application of echolocation to robot guidance and assisting the blind. The method is based on the echolocation of bats. It combines a source of pulsed ultrasound (100) with a recently-developed acoustic vector probe (AVP) (200) into an echolocation instrument (1000), together with a data-acquisition system (300), a digital signal processor (400) and an output device (500). The source emits pulses of ultrasound of about 35 kHz over a beam angle of approximately 100 degrees and the AVP detects backscattered pulses from a discrete distribution of acoustic highlights on surrounding objects. The ultrasonic sound pressures of the backscattered pulses are heterodyned down to lower frequencies so that the signal processor can make an accurate determination of the sound-intensity vector for each pulse. The sound-intensity vector points in the direction of the highlight from which the backscattered pulse originates while the round-trip time of flight of the pulse determines the distance to the highlight. In this way the positions of the highlights on surrounding objects can be determined. The distribution of such highlights changes when the echolocation instrument moves relative to surrounding objects, generating a sequence of highlight distributions that can be stored in the memory of the processor and combined to provide a more complete representation of surrounding objects.
