Automatic infusion system based on an adaptive patient model

ActiveUS20050171503A1Ensuring wound repairReduces intensive care and hospital mortality and morbidityMedical devicesPressure infusionPatient modelDisease
Present invention is a system of blood glucose monitoring and intensive insulin therapy in a ICU for strict maintenance of normoglycemia which reduces intensive care and hospital mortality and morbidity of critically ill adult patients. The findings of present study also reveal factors determining insulin doses needed to maintain normoglycemia as well as the impact of insulin dose versus blood glucose level on the observed outcome benefits have been established. The invention provides a control system that adapts the flow of the insulin infusion based on insulin requirement calculated by blood glucose levels and clinical parameters such as history of diabetes, Body Mass Index, blood glucose level on admission, reason of ICU admission, time in the ICU, type and severity of illness, caloric intake, obesity, drugs affecting insulin sensitivity). This automated insulin monitoring systems significantly reduces the workload and human resource management problems for intensive insulin therapy in patients in the ICU.

Unicondylar knee implant

A knee prosthesis, methods of implanting the prosthesis, method of treating arthritis of the knee, and a kit therefore are provided. The prosthesis answers many of the limitations of current knee prosthetic devices by providing a two-component (or alternatively, an optional three-component) device, as either a single structure, or as separate pieces. One of the components is constructed of low friction material, while the second is composed of a weight-dissipating cushioning material; the optional third component is constructed of low friction material. The prosthesis is initially attached to surrounding soft tissue in the knee by biodegradable sutures; it is held permanently in place by fibrous ingrowth into a porous collagen rim in the cushioning component. Major improvements provided by the present invention over currently available prostheses include minimal incisions, minimal or no bone cuts, minimal overall dissection (these improvements lead to shorter hospital stays and rapid rehabilitation and fewer potential for side effects), less prosthetic wear, greater longevity, fewer activity restrictions, able to be used on young, large, active patients, ease of revision, ease of conversion into a total knee arthroplasty if needed.

Patient care management systems and methods

A patient care management system for assisting a physician in monitoring drug use by a patient. The system receives drug dispensation data for a drug, on the basis of which the system determines drug supply availability data. The drug supply availability data is indicative of periods of time during which the drug was available in non-duplicate supply, or in oversupply, or in insufficient supply. The periods of time are displayed with respect to a common time base. Each degree of supply availability is visually displayed via a graphical user interface using, e.g., a color coded scheme, so as to be distinguishable by a user. This allows a physician to rapidly assess over-consumption or compliance problems. Plural drugs may be monitored on a single display screen. The system may also be adapted to allow an prescribing physician to assess refill compliance, hospitalization periods and prescription drug costs.

Pedicle dart system

Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) as a surgical approach is increasingly utilized because of the advantages it offers over conventional spine surgery. The smaller incision results in decreased tissue damage, less blood loss, decreased hospital stay & faster postoperative recovery. The drawbacks of MISS are the long learning curve of working through a smaller incision, longer length of surgery, & potential higher complication rate due to compromised visual field. These limitations can be overcome by more effectively using imaging and navigational devices. The pedicle device simplifies the hardest part of MISS instrumented fusion of conventional pedicle screw insertion by introducing a percutaneous temporary device to locate and create the channel for later conventional pedicle screw implantation using available imaging techniques. This results in faster conventional pedicle screw insertion with precision, thereby decreasing implantation error and minimizing soft tissue injury and blood loss, as well as neurological, vascular, and dural injuries and complications.

The invention discloses a method for effectively culturing tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). The method comprises the following steps: extracting mononuclear cells from the pectoral ascite or tumor tissue of a patient, washing, inoculating into a culture bottle coated with recombinant human fibrin and cluster-of-differentiation-3 antibody, culturing for 24 hours, adding interleukin II, then using a serum-free culture medium containing the interleukin II and the supernatant pectoral ascite to enlarge and subculture every two or three days, and adding apoptosis-regulated protein survivin and mucoprotein-1 on the twelveth or thirteenth day to activate the killing activity; and harvesting cells on the fourteenth day. By adopting the method, the culture time, which is only 14 days, is greatly shortened, so that the hospital stays of the patient can be greatly shortened and the hospital burden of the patient can be reduced. Meanwhile, the problems that the cell proliferation speed is low and the proliferation ratio is low can be solved, thus the number of the cultured cells can meet the clinical requirement. The cultured TILs has strong cell specificity so as to enhance the clinical curative effect.

Ligament reestablishing system

The invention relates to the field of medical instruments and discloses a ligament reestablishing system. After a ligament is reestablished for the first time by using the ligament reestablishing system, the ligament can be quickly replaced through a small incision outside a joint without using an arthroscope if a revision surgery needs to be carried out on the ligament. Because the technology has the character of quick revision, a ligament substitute material is not needed to be firmly combined with a bone channel any longer, so the ligament reestablishing system provides possibilities for reliable use of artificial materials except autologous / allogenic tendons. Moreover, the difficulty and cost of the revision surgery are reduced, the hospital time is reduced, and the indication of ligament reestablishment is expanded. The ligament reestablishing system comprises a first endosteal hollow channel, a second endosteal hollow channel, a ligament substitute, a first fixing piece and a second fixing piece. A bone penetrating through the near end of the joint and a bone penetrating through the far end of the joint are implanted into the first endosteal hollow channel and the second endosteal hollow channel respectively. Assessment of Wound Status and Tissue Viability via Analysis of Spatially Resolved THz Reflectometry Maps

Systems, methods and apparatuses for performing wound analysis using THz imaging are provided. Due to the large complex component of water's dielectric constant in the THz regime, and the relative frequency invariance of non-aqueous tissue constituents, this modality is highly sensitive to the water content of tissue. It has been found that using THz imaging turns the presence of edema into a contrast mechanism, and allows for the use of the spatial distributions of edema to assess wound status immediately. Apparatus and methods enable earlier diagnosis of wound status which could result in accelerated treatment and shorter overall hospital stays.
