The digital signal is analyzed to obtain information about both natural and manufacturing defects that might be present at the end of the lumber and also to obtain further information about the properties of the lumber from the location of the pith, the growth rings and the grain pattern. This information may be used to augment the analysis of defects present in the entire board for determination of the final grade within an automatic lumber grading system. The system can also be used on a stand-alone basis and integrated into a non-automated grading area as a grader assist device.

For live animals, the system uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on a single occasion to evaluate the animal and determine a number of days the animal must be fed to reach a maximum value. For carcasses, the system evaluates the carcass to grade the quality and quantity of meat the carcass will provide. A grading system (10) for grading marine animals such as fish (12) by size includes a receptacle (14) for holding a volume of water (16) and the fish (12). The receptacle (14) includes a landing (18) through which fish can enter and exit the receptacle (14). A grader (20) is supported to rotate through the water (16) about a horizontal axle (22). The grader (20) includes a first panel (24a) which is provided with a plurality of openings (26a) in the form of gaps between parallel radially extending rods (28). The panel (24a) has an outer peripheral edge (30) constituted by two radial edges (32a) and a lateral outer edge (34a) extending between the radial edges (32a). The outer peripheral edge (30) contacts or is sufficiently close to an inside surface (36) of the receptacle (14) to prevent the passage of fish (12) between the edge (30) and an inside surface (36) of the receptacle (14). As grader (20) is rotated in a clockwise direction (D) about the axle (22) to a first grading position where the lateral edge (34a) is adjacent the landing (18), the panel (24a) sweeps through the receptacle. The fish which are sufficiently small are able to pass through the openings (26a) leaving the larger fish in front of the panel (24a). When the grader (20) reaches the first position, the only fish (12) in advance of the panel (24a) are those which are too big to pass through the openings (26a). These are now directed through the landing (18) out of the receptacle (14).

The invention relates to a high-pressure rolling and magnetic-gravity separation process for lean hematite. The high-pressure rolling and magnetic-gravity separation process for lean hematite is characterized by comprising the following steps that after raw ore particles with the particle size of 0-300 mm are subjected to the coarse crushing and intermediate crushing screening operation, the product particle size is 0-35 mm; after the particles pass through a high-pressure roll mill and a wind grading system, the large-particle-size products subjected to wind grading return to the high-pressure roll mill, the small-particle-size products subjected to wind grinding and with the 200-mesh sieve sieving rate being 90%-95% are fed to the technical procedures with low intensity magnetism, high intensity magnetism and a centrifugal machine so as to be graded; concentrate obtained through low intensity magnetic separation and concentrate obtained through the centrifugal machine are combined into final concentrate with the grade being 66.5%-67.5% and the yield being 27%-29%; and the grade of tailings of high intensity magnetic separation is 8.3%-8.8%, the grade of tailings of two-stage scavenging centrifuge is 16%-18%, and the tailings of high intensity magnetic separation and the tailings of two-stage scavenging centrifuge are combined into final tailings with the grade being 10.50%-11% and the yield being 61%-63%. The high-pressure rolling and magnetic-gravity separation process for lean hematite has the advantages that original fine crushing operation and two-stage grinding operation are omitted, the products with the 200-mesh sieve sieving rate being 90%-95% can be directly obtained by the adoption of the high-pressure roll mill and the wind grading system, the process structure is simplified, and the ore separation cost is reduced significantly.
