Method of protecting the health and well-being of coal mine machine operators

A method of operating coal mine machinery that protects and maintains machine operators' health and well-being removes the machine operators to a clean, low-noise environment inside a refuge chamber. Inside, are controls, cameras, audio, and informational displays needed to run continuous mining machines nearby and communicate mine-wide with other personnel. Cameras fitted to the mining machines provide straight-ahead views, ground penetrating radars fitted to the cutting drums measure the coal depths in the ceilings above, the floors below, and the coal face ahead. Guidance data is presented on informational displays, and the data from the ceilings and floors is used to drive computer graphics special effects to graphically represent the coal ceilings and coal floors overlaying boundary rock. Audio pickups on the mining machine allow the operator to hear and feel how the machine is functioning, just as operators have always employed their other senses.

Fixture for a round shank chisel having a wearing protection disk

A fixture for attaching a round shank chisel to a road milling machine or the like. The round shank chisel has a chisel head and a chisel shank. With a bearing surface the chisel head rests upon a wearing protection disk which in turn rests on and is supported by a chisel holder. The chisel shank is accommodated by a location bore of the chisel holder. This invention prevents dirt from penetrating the area of the location bore of such a fixture and at the same time ensures that the free movability of the round shank chisel is not impaired. Thus, the chisel holder has a circumferential projection or a circumferential depression which extends along the location bore. Also, the wearing protection disk has a circumferential receiving groove or a circumferential shoulder and the projection or the depression of the chisel holder engages with the receiving groove or the depression of the wearing protection disk when the round shank chisel is assembled.

Methods of using a laser to spall and drill holes in rocks

Apparatus and methods of using lasers are provided for spalling and drilling holes into rocks. A rock removal process is provided that utilizes a combination of laser-induced thermal stress and laser induced superheated steam explosions just below the surface of the laser / rock interaction to spall the rock into small fragments that can then be easily removed by a purging flow. Single laser beams of given irradiance spall rock and create holes having diameter and depth approximately equal to the beam spot size. A group of the single laser beams are steered in a controllable manner by an electro-optic laser beam switch to locations on the surface of the rock, creating multiple overlapping spalled holes thereby removing a layer of rock of a desired diameter. Drilling of a deep hole is achieved by spalling consecutive layers with an intermittent feed motion of the laser head perpendicular to the rock surface.

Look-ahead radar and horizon sensing for coal cutting drums and horizontal directional drills

A coal-mining machine uses a ground-penetrating radar based on a software-definable transmitter for launching pairs of widely separated and coherent continuous waves. Each pair is separated by a constant or variable different amount double-sideband suppressed carrier modulation such as 10 MHz, 20 MHz, and 30 MHz. Processing suppresses the larger first interface reflection and emphasizes the smaller second, third, etc. reflections. Processing determines the electrical parameter of the natural medium adjacent to the antenna. Deep reflections at 90-degrees and 270-degrees create maximum reflection and will be illuminated with modulation signal peaks. Quadrature detection, mixing, and down-conversion result in 0-degree and 180-degree reflections effectively dropping out in demodulation.
