8007 results about "Grayscale" patented technology

In digital photography, computer-generated imagery, and colorimetry, a grayscale or greyscale image is one in which the value of each pixel is a single sample representing only an amount of light, that is, it carries only intensity information. Grayscale images, a kind of black-and-white or gray monochrome, are composed exclusively of shades of gray. The contrast ranges from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest.

Method for creating high resolution color image, system for creating high resolution color image and program creating high resolution color image

A limitation in the physical resolution of an image sensor offers a motivation to improve the resolution of an image. Super-resolution is mainly applied to gray scale images, and it has not been thoroughly investigated yet that a high resolution color image is reconstructed from an image sensor having a color filter array. An object of the invention is to directly reconstruct a high resolution color image from color mosaic obtained by an image sensor having a color filter array. A high resolution color image reconstruction method according to the invention is based on novel technique principles of color image reconstruction that an increase in resolution and demosaicing are performed at the same time. The verification and effective implement of the invention are also described.

System and method for traffic sign recognition

This invention provides a vehicle-borne system and method for traffic sign recognition that provides greater accuracy and efficiency in the location and classification of various types of traffic signs by employing rotation and scale-invariant (RSI)-based geometric pattern-matching on candidate traffic signs acquired by a vehicle-mounted forward-looking camera and applying one or more discrimination processes to the recognized sign candidates from the pattern-matching process to increase or decrease the confidence of the recognition. These discrimination processes include discrimination based upon sign color versus model sign color arrangements, discrimination based upon the pose of the sign candidate versus vehicle location and / or changes in the pose between image frames, and / or discrimination of the sign candidate versus stored models of fascia characteristics. The sign candidates that pass with high confidence are classified based upon the associated model data and the drive / vehicle is informed of their presence. In an illustrative embodiment, a preprocess step converts a color image of the sign candidates into a grayscale image in which the contrast between sign colors is appropriate enhanced to assist the pattern-matching process.

Multi-display handheld device and supporting system

Current approaches to paperless books use single screen laptop computers or electronic paper display (EPD)-based book readers. Laptop computers consume too much power and cannot be used for extended periods of time, such as an entire school day, without recharging its battery. EPD devices are limited in functionality due to their slow refresh rate and grey-scale only images. An embodiment of the present invention integrates bi-stable display technology and refresh display technology into a single device and manages the use of these technologies to achieve power savings while providing a rich set of display functionalities to support user interaction with content in a synergistic manner. The power savings functionality enables the device to have a battery operating life between charges of many hours of operation, such as eight hours or more, while the display functionality enables users to access, display, and interact with content in ways users have become accustomed and in ways not before possible.

System and process for broadcast and communication with very low bit-rate bi-level or sketch video

A system and process for broadcast and communication with bi-level or sketch video at extremely low bandwidths is described. Essentially, bi-level and sketch video presents the outlines of the objects in a scene being depicted. Bi-level and sketch video provides a clearer shape, smoother motion, shorter initial latency and cheaper computational cost than do conventional DCT-based video compression methods. This is accomplished by converting each color or gray-scale image frame to bi-level or sketch image frame using adaptive thresholding method, compressing bi-level or sketch image frames into bi-level or sketch video using adaptive context-based arithmetic coding method. Bi-level or sketch video is particularly suitable to such small devices as Pocket PCs and mobile phones that possess small display screen, low bandwidth connection, and light computational power.

Real time binarization of gray images

A binarization method for gray address images which combines high quality and high speed. The method is designed specifically for efficient software implementation. Two binarization approaches, localized background thresholds and Laplacian edge enhancement, are combined into a process to enhance the strengths of the two methods and eliminate their weaknesses. The image is divided into tiles, making binarization decisions for each tile. Tile decisions are modified based on adjacent tile decisions and then the tiles are binarized. Binarization of pixels is performed by performing background thresholding and edge detection thresholding. Only pixels exceeding both thresholds are selected as "on".

Locating a mouth corner includes generating another intensity response map and generating another binary map using another threshold based on another histogram of the intensity response map. Locating a chin or a cheek includes applying angle constrained gradient analysis to reject locations that cannot be the chin or cheek. Locating a cheek further includes removing falsely detected cheeks by parabola fitting curves through the cheeks.

Black blood angiography method and apparatus

To produce a black body angiographic image representation of a subject (42), an imaging scanner (10) acquires imaging data that includes black blood vascular contrast. A reconstruction processor (38) reconstructs a gray scale image representation (100) from the imaging data. A post-acquisition processor (46) transforms (130) the image representation (100) into a pre-processed image representation (132). The processor (46) assigns (134) each image element into one of a plurality of classes including a black class corresponding to imaged vascular structures, bone, and air, and a gray class corresponding to other non-vascular tissues. The processor (46) averages (320) intensities of the image elements of the gray class to obtain a mean gray intensity value (322), and replaces (328) the values of image elements comprising non-vascular structures of the black class with the mean gray intensity value.

Backlight Modulation For Display

A display ( 10 ) has a non pixel addressable backlight ( 130 ), having a temporal modulation applied, a pixel addressable LCD ( 120 ) in an optical path and the pixel addressable part being arranged to output each pixel of a frame as a temporal sequence of output values unrelated to colour components of the pixel, different values of the sequence coinciding with different output levels of the modulated non pixel addressable part. The apparent luminance or colour of the pixels can be made to take intermediate values between the gradations dictated by the stepsize corresponding to a least significant bit of the pixel addressable part, to enable more accurate reproduction of both colour and greyscale images. Additional intermediate output levels are concentrated at low illumination levels. A convertor generates a temporal modulation of the pixels for the LCD according to a value of the pixels in an input signal, and synchronized to the temporal modulation of the backlight.

Image Processing Apparatus And Image Processing Method

Background images are removed and only the desired payment information is extracted from a grayscale image of a check or similar financial instrument. A density distribution improvement process applied to grayscale raw image data 40 acquired by scanning a check corrects the density distribution of the raw image data 40 to separate the density range of the desired payment information from the density range of the background image. Image sharpening or contrast enhancement can be used as the density distribution improvement method. A threshold level 44 for clearly separating the payment information from the background image is then calculated from the characteristics of the density distribution of the grayscale improved image data 42 acquired by the density distribution improvement process. Histograms of the density distributions are used to determine the characteristics of the density distribution. The improved image data 42 is then converted to binary image data 46 using the threshold level 44. Most of the background image is white and most of the desired payment information is black in the binary image data 46.

Methods and apparatuses for aesthetically enhanced image conversion

Methods and apparatuses for automated conversion of color images to aesthetically enhanced gray scale images. In one embodiment, the mix of color channels of a color image is automatically determined as a result of analysis of the image for the generation of a gray scale image. In one example, the data of a color channel (e.g., Blue) that is not suitable for a gray scale representation is not used. The adjustment strength depends on the image itself. In one example, a stronger color channel is automatically weighted less than a weaker color channel for enhancement. In one example, after the contrast is further strengthened through nonlinear scaling, the boundary portion of the image is darkened to strengthen the edges and draw attention to the center of the image. Optionally, an attractive color balance adjustment is also made according to the gray levels to further enhance the appearance.
