Gas kinetics is a science in the branch of fluid dynamics, concerned with the study of motion of gases and its effects on physical systems. Based on the principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, gas dynamics arises from the studies of gas flows in transonic and supersonic flights. To distinguish itself from other sciences in fluid dynamics, the studies in gas dynamics are often defined with gases flowing around or within physical objects at speeds comparable to or exceed the speed of sound and causing a significant change in temperature and pressure. Some examples of these studies include but are not limited to: choked flows in nozzles and valves, shock waves around jets, aerodynamic heating on atmospheric reentry vehicles and flows of gas fuel within a jet engine. At the molecular level, gas dynamics is a study of the kinetic theory of gases, often leading to the study of gas diffusion, statistical mechanics, chemical thermodynamics and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Cold gas-dynamic spray repair on gas turbine engine components

A new method for repairing turbine engine components is provided. The method utilizes a cold gas-dynamic spray technique to repair degradation on turbine blades, vanes and other components. In the cold gas-dynamic spray process particles at a temperature below their fusing temperature are accelerated and directed to a target surface on the turbine blade. When the particles strike the target surface, the kinetic energy of the particles is converted into plastic deformation of the particle, causing the particle to form a strong bond with the target surface. Post-spray processing is then performed to consolidate and homogenize the applied materials and restore integrity to the material properties in the repaired turbine component. Thus, the cold gas-dynamic spray process and post-spray processing can be employed to effectively repair degraded areas on gas turbine components.

Oxygen delivery cannula system that improves the effectiveness of alveolar oxygenation

The pulmonary oxygen flow control system delivers oxygen from a source of pressure to a nasal cannula worn by the patient. Between the source and the nasal cannula is a pendant flow structure which includes an orifice followed by a gas dynamic valve. When the downstream pressure in the cannula is high, the gas dynamic valve diverts the oxygen flow through the orifice to a flexible reservoir. Upon inhalation, the pressure at the cannula falls so that the gas dynamic valve delivers the orifice flow to the cannula and also utilizes a Venturi effect to withdraw oxygen from the reservoir and deliver it to the cannula. The cannula has nasal tubes which have angular faces and which are positioned farther into the nares to deliver the oxygen more efficiently.

The device has a mixing chamber for the fire-extinguishing substance and the gas, with the chamber having a gas-dynamic nozzle mounted at its outlet. A profiled channel in the nozzle has a length equal to at least twice the diameter of the nozzle channel at its smallest section. The vessel and the tank may be fitted in a backpack. The nozzle may be made in the shape of ring and fitted with an annular channel for feeding additional working gas before a minimal section of its own channel. The central body of the annular nozzle may be made in the shape of a cone with its tip directed toward the nozzle inlet.

Apparatus and method for the transport of ions into a vacuum

The invention relates to methods and devices for the transport of ions generated in gases near atmospheric pressure into the vacuum system of a mass spectrometer. Instead of the single capillary customary in commercial instruments, the invention uses a multichannel plate with hundreds of thousands of very short and narrow capillaries, whose total gas throughput is no higher than that of a normal single capillary. The large-area take-up of ions in the gas flow greatly increases the transfer yield. If the channels are conductive, this prevents the inside surfaces becoming charged. An ion funnel can separate the ions from the gas flow in the vacuum and focus them. Gas-dynamic focusing in an electric decelerating field reduces ion losses caused by wall collisions and prevents very light ions (protons, water clusters) from entering the vacuum. Staged multichannel plates reduce pumping requirements.

Ion transfer assemblies and methods for directing ions from an ionization source to a mass analyzer. A first partition element separates a viscous flow region from a transition flow region. A second partition element separates the transition flow region into a first transition flow chamber and a second transition flow chamber. A focusing element defines a cavity shaped to direct a portion of a gas flow including ions entrained in a background gas from a first aperture in the first partition element towards a second aperture in the second partition element based on gas dynamics. The cavity is shaped to direct the gas flow without requiring the application of external electrostatic fields. Vents or slits can be provided in or between the first partition element and the focusing element to provide for expansion of the gas flow in the transition flow region.
