Polarized interference recycling backlight module and liquid crystal display incorporating the same

A polarized interference recycling backlight module for generating light with a single polarization state, which reduces the optical loss in light beam output, is suitable for mass production, and decreases manufacturing costs, is disclosed. The backlight is easily integrated with conventional electro-optical display devices and achieves high-quality polarization. The polarized interference recycling backlight module according to the present invention comprises an optical cavity and interference polar (I-Polar) composed of stacked layers. At least one layer of said I-Polar is optically anisotropic and is made by means of Cascade Crystallization Process, is characterized by a globally ordered biaxial crystalline structure with an intermolecular spacing of 3.4±0.3 Å in the direction of one of optical axes, is transparent in the visible spectral range, and is formed by rodlike supramolecules representing at least one polycyclic organic compound with a conjugated π-system and ionogenic groups. Another aspect of the present invention is a liquid crystal display incorporating the polarized interference recycling backlight module.

Adhesive-free bond non-linear optical (NLO) components, devices and systems including one or more engineered quasi non-critical phase matched or contra-phase matched NLO crystal doublets. Such systems and devices advantageously increase the efficiency of NLO frequency conversion and improve beam quality. Devices are applicable to any uniaxial and biaxial NLO crystals in a wide range of wavelengths, e.g., from far ultraviolet to visible to far infrared. Devices employing engineered AFB NLO components according to certain embodiments include any conventional frequency converting architectures. Systems and methods are also provided to unambiguously determine and correct walk-off for any arbitrary uniaxial and biaxial crystal orientation.

Engineered nonlinear optical crystal composites for frequency conversion

Walk-off corrected (WOC) non-linear optical (NLO) components, devices and systems including one or more engineered WOC NLO crystal doublets. Such systems and devices advantageously increase the efficiency of an OPO operation. Devices are applicable to any uniaxial and biaxial NLO crystals in a wide range of wavelengths, e.g., from far ultraviolet to visible to far infrared. Devices employing engineered WOC NLO components according to embodiments of the present invention include any conventional frequency converting architectures. Systems and methods are also provided to unambiguously determine and correct walk-off for any arbitrary uniaxial and biaxial crystal orientation. The correct crystal orientation is also experimentally confirmed. This allows the use of WOC crystal doublet assemblies for a wide range of wavelengths and NLO crystals that until now have not been used because of low efficiency due to walk-off and inability of readily correcting walk-off.

A multichannel optical fiber rotary connector achieving conical refraction comprises a rotor and a demultiplexing system. The rotor is arranged in a stator sleeve through a bearing. The demultiplexing system is composed of a demultiplexer sleeve connected with the output end of the stator sleeve, a demultiplexer arranged in the demultiplexer sleeve, and an output collimator arranged at the output end of the demultiplexer sleeve. The output end of the rotor is provided with two to twenty input optical fiber collimators. A biaxial crystal is arranged in the stator sleeve and corresponds to the light output end of each input optical fiber collimator. A convergent lens or a lens set is embedded in an output end cover of the stator sleeve and corresponds to the light output end of the biaxial crystal. A collimator fixing sleeve is embedded and corresponds to the light output side of the convergent lens or the lens set. A collimator or large-core-diameter optical fiber is fixedly arranged in the center of the collimator fixing sleeve in the axial direction. The rear end of the collimator or the rear end of the large-core-diameter optical fiber is connected with the demultiplexer in the demultiplexing system. The multichannel optical fiber rotary connector achieving conical refraction has the advantages of being simple in structure, resistant to electromagnetic interference, small in insertion loss, high in assembly accuracy, and stable and reliable in performance.

The manufacturing method includes the steps of activating at least one surface of a metal plate T1 by sputter etching or the like; activating at least one surface of a metal foil T2 made of Cu or a Cu alloy which is cold-rolled at a rolling reduction of 90% or more; laminating the metal plate and the metal foil such that an activated surface of the metal plate and an activated surface of the metal foil face each other in an opposed manner and applying cold rolling to the metal plate and the metal foil which are laminated to each other at a rolling reduction of 10% or less, for example; and biaxially orienting crystals of the metal foil by heat treatment at a temperature of not lower than 150° C. and not higher than 1000° C.

According to output of crystal double-refraction polarized light in a biaxial crystal, the refractive index and the whole reflex angle which are actually used in polarized light of the alpha-BaTeMo2O9 crystal are calculated, the use ratio of the crystal is high, and polarized light output in a certain wave band is achieved. Through measurement, the extinction ratio of the polarizing prism is larger than 10000 and is close to that of a commonly used polarizing prism at present, and can satisfy the requirement for application in actual optics.
