Technique for securely communicating programming content

A technique is provided for securely transferring programming content from a first device in a first layer, e.g., a trusted domain, to a second device in a second layer, e.g., outside the trusted domain. When a user requests that the first device transfer protected content to the second device, the first device needs to authenticate the second device. After the second device is authenticated, the first device may transfer to the second device the protected content, together with a rights file associated therewith. The rights file specifies the rights of the second device to use the protected content, according to its security level indicative of its security. These rights may concern, e.g., the number of times that the second device may subsequently transfer the protected content to other devices, the time period within which the second device may play the protected content, etc. The higher the security level of the second device is, the more rights accorded thereto. Indeed, the second device may need to meet a minimum security level requirement in order for it to receive or keep the protected content.

Wireless patient monitoring system

A device and method for monitoring a patient having a sensing device taking sensor data continuously and a transmitter located on the patient and internally powered. The transmitter is normally in a power-down state and powered-up for transmitting the sensor data. A receiver is located remote from the patient and receives the sensor data transmitted wirelessly from the transmitter. The transmission is typically a burst and can also be initiated on a command. For the burst, the sensor data is accumulated over a first period. The transmitter can transmit the sensor data over a second period of time. The second period of time is shorter than the first period of time. Once the transmission is complete, transmitter can be powered down. A further step displays the sensor data at the receiver in pseudo real-time. The display is shifted by a sum of the first and the second period of time.

Delay cache method and apparatus

Delayed caching receives an evaluation interval to delay updating the objects stored in a delayed cache, delays a time period corresponding to the evaluation interval, and updates the objects stored in the contents of the delayed cache when the time period delay has completed. The configuration operation for the delayed cache selects a time interval to sample a trace having object access frequencies for objects stored in a cache, creates a first working set of objects accessed during the time interval and a second working set of objects accessed during a subsequent time interval based on the historical trace, determines that the difference between the objects contained in the first and second working sets does not exceed a maximum threshold with the selected time interval, and sets a evaluation interval for evaluating the contents of the cache to the selected time interval.

Time series storage for large-scale monitoring system

Methods and apparatus are described for collecting and storing large volumes of time series data. For example, such data may comprise metrics gathered from one or more large-scale computing clusters over time. Data are gathered from resources which define aspects of interest in the clusters, such as nodes serving web traffic. The time series data are aggregated into sampling intervals, which measure data points from a resource at successive periods of time. These data points are organized in a database according to the resource and sampling interval. Profiles may also be used to further organize data by the types of metrics gathered. Data are kept in the database during a retention period, after which they may be purged. Each sampling interval may define a different retention period, allowing operating records to stretch far back in time while respecting storage constraints.

Method for software driven generation of multiple simultaneous high speed pulse width modulated signals

Systems and methods can provide, in one aspect, a method for modulating the pulse width of control signals generated on a plurality of separate channels. In one practice, the methods described herein are suitable for execution on a microprocessor or micro controller platform that includes a timer interrupt mechanism which will generate an interrupt in response to a timer counting down a selected time interval or time period. In one practice, the timer is set to count down a period of time that is representative of a portion, or sub period, of the PWM cycle. Upon expiration of that time period, the timer executes an interrupt that causes the micro controller to enter an interrupt service routine (ISR) that can further modulate the PWM cycle of one or more signals.

Server-group messaging system for interactive applications

A method for deploying interactive applications over a network containing host computers and group messaging servers is disclosed. The method operates in a conventional unicast network architecture comprised of conventional network links and unicast gateways and routers. The hosts send messages containing destination group addresses by unicast to the group messaging servers. The group addresses select message groups maintained by the group messaging servers. For each message group, the group messaging servers also maintain a list of all of the hosts that are members of the particular group. In its most simple implementation, the method consists of the group server receiving a message from a host containing a destination group address. Using the group address, the group messaging server then selects a message group which lists all of the host members of the group which are the targets of messages to the group. The group messaging server then forwards the message to each of the target hosts. In an interactive application, many messages will be arriving at the group server close to one another in time. Rather than simply forward each message to its targeted hosts, the group messaging server aggregates the contents of each of messages received during a specified time period and then sends an aggregated message to the targeted hosts. The time period can be defined in a number of ways. This method reduces the message traffic between hosts in a networked interactive application and contributes to reducing the latency in the communications between the hosts.

Apparatus for reducing data corruption in a non-volatile memory

The loss of data and / or the corruption of data that may occur in flash memory when a reset signal is received during a memory write cycle is prevented by delaying reset signals sent to the flash memory for a time period sufficient for a write cycle to be completed. The loss of data and / or the corruption of data that may occur in flash memory when the power supply is interrupted during a write cycle is prevented by providing a DC-to-DC converter with one or more large capacitors in parallel with its input as the power supply to the flash memory. If the system power supply fails or is interrupted, the discharge of the capacitor(s) delays the voltage decay at the input of the DC-to-DC converter such that the output of the DC-to-DC converter remains within tolerance for a time sufficient for the flash memory to complete a write cycle.

Training, inference and user interface for guiding the caching of media content on local stores

The present invention is related to a system and method of caching data employing probabilistic predictive techniques. The system and method has particular application to multimedia systems for providing local storage of a subset of available viewing selections by assigning a value to a selection and retaining selections in the cache depending on the value and size of the selection. The value assigned to an item can represent the time-independent likelihood that a user will review an item at some time in the future. An initial value of an item can be based on the user's viewing habits, the user's viewing habit over particular time segment (e.g., early morning, late morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, primetime, late night) and / or viewing habits of a group of user's during a particular time segment. A value assigned to a selection dynamically changes according to a set of cache retention policies, where the value can be time-dependent functions that decay based on the class of the item, as determined by inference about the class or via a label associated with the item. A selections value may be reduced as the selection ages because a user is less likely to view the selection over time. Additionally, a value of a selection may change based on changes on a user's viewing habits, changes in time segments or a user's modification of the cache retention policies.

Signal detector and method employing a coherent accumulation system to correlate non-uniform and disjoint sample segments

A signal detector employs a coherent accumulation system that coherently combines the correlation results derived from segments of samples of a received signal. The segments may have non-uniform lengths and may have been obtained over different and non-overlapping time periods. The segments are obtained during sampling windows of arbitrary length and at arbitrary times, and the results of processing the segments are successively combined in a coherent manner (separate magnitude and phase accumulation) until a threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) has been achieved. Coherent integration is enabled by introducing a carrier phase offset as well as a code phase offset, so that different segments are aligned in carrier phase as well as code phase. Although not limited to this application, in one implementation example, the signal detector is used in connection with and as part of a global positioning system (GPS) receiver.
