Composite modular barrier structures and packages

A composite multi-layer barrier is produced by first vapor depositing a barrier under vacuum over a substrate of interest and then depositing an additional barrier at atmospheric pressure in a preferably thermoplastic layer. The resulting multi-layer barrier is then used to coat an article of interest in a lamination process wherein the thermoplastic layer is fused onto itself and the surface of the article. The vacuum-deposited barrier may consists of a first leveling polymer layer followed by an inorganic barrier material sputtered over the leveling layer and of an additional polymeric layer flash evaporated, deposited, and cured under vacuum. The thermoplastic polymeric layer is then deposited by extrusion, drawdown or roll coating at atmospheric pressure. The resulting multi-layer barrier may be stacked using the thermoplastic layer as bonding agent. Nano-particles may be included in the thermoplastic layer to improve the barrier properties of the structure. A desiccant material may also be included or added as a separate layer.

Roofing shingle with headlap seal and improved coverage

A roofing shingle for enhanced wind / rain durability embodies two transverse lines of adhesion. A first discontinuous line of adhesive joins the butt edge of an overlying shingle to the underlying shingle. Secondly, a band of sealant adjacent the top edge of an underlying shingle seals against an overlying shingle to prevent penetration by wind driven rain to the roof deck. A reduced headlap is thereby permitted, thereby either reducing shingle size or extending shingle coverage. Exposed portions of the sealant band improve the erosion resistance of underlying shingles.

Method and system for purging moisture from an oxygenator

ActiveUS20100101657A1Improving gas exchange propertyImproves gas exchange propertyMembranesSemi-permeable membranesHollow fibre membraneFiber
A method and system for improving gas exchange properties of oxygenators which utilize hollow fiber membranes for removing carbon dioxide or adding oxygen to a patient's blood via extracorporeal circulation by removing moisture accumulating in the fibers are disclosed. The system utilizes a vacuum source for drawing sweep gas into the oxygenator, a moisture collection unit for storing moisture removed from the oxygenator, the moisture collecting unit being in communication with the oxygenator and the vacuum source and a flow control mechanism having an open position which allows sweep gas exiting the oxygenator to flow to the moisture collecting unit and a closed position which stops the flow of sweep gas from the oxygenator to the moisture collecting unit. The vacuum source draws sweep gas through the oxygenator and moisture collecting unit when the flow control mechanism is in the open position and the vacuum source creates a vacuum buildup in the moisture collecting unit when the flow control mechanism is in the closed position. The vacuum in the moisture collecting unit provides a sudden increase to the flow rate of the sweep gas to draw moisture with the sweep gas exiting the oxygenator when the flow control mechanism is returned to the open position.

Thermal processing of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), having up to approximately 8% or more moisture content, dries and preheats the material to enhance efficient recycling in a hot mix asphalt plant. A combustor and heat exchanger reheat circulating hot oil, which with hot gas, moves through a hollow auger and around the RAP counter to the flow of RAP. Moisture is forced outward from within the particles and is flashed away by the hot exhaust gas. A similar secondary heater heats the RAP to just below asphalt coking temperature before the hot dry RAP is added as an aggregate to the hot mix asphalt plant.

Ductless type clothes drier

A ductless type clothes drier comprises: a heat pump system including a condenser configured to supply hot air into the drum, and an evaporator configured to remove moisture inside air exhausted from the drum; and a lint removing unit configured to inject water to the evaporator so that lint on the evaporator can be removed.Accordingly, without using water, moisture included in exhausted air can be removed as a heat exchange process is performed at the evaporator. Water for removing moisture included in air does not have to be supplied to the ductless type clothes drier, thereby solving cost increase due to increase of a water consumption amount. Furthermore, since clean water remained after being used for heat exchange is not discarded, waste of water resources is prevented. Also, the conventional problem that the ductless type clothes drier has a difficulty in being commercialized due to increase of a water consumption amount is solved.Furthermore, since the lint removing unit configured to inject water to the evaporator is provided, lint on the evaporator is removed. Accordingly, a heat exchange efficiency by the evaporator is enhanced, and a drying function of the ductless type clothes drier is more enhanced.
