Method of encoding mode determination, method of motion estimation and encoding apparatus

Motion estimation of a macro block in inter16×16, inter16×8, and inter8×16 modes is performed and a determination of whether to further perform motion estimation in a P8×8 mode is made. Motion estimation in P8×8 mode is either omitted or performed and one mode is determined according to a rate distortion cost of the respective modes. Spatial prediction encoding may then be performed or omitted based on comparing the rate distortion cost of the one mode with a predetermined value. Accordingly, by selectively omitting variable block motion estimation and spatial prediction encoding which are the most complicated operations in an H.264 encoder, determining an encoding mode is rapidly performed such that encoding speed increases.

Pixel circuit, display and driving method thereof

The invention provides a pixel circuit that can cancel the influence of the mobility of a drive transistor. A drive transistor supplies to a light-emitting element, an output current dependent upon an input voltage during a certain emission period. The light-emitting element emits light with a luminance dependent upon a video signal in response to the output current supplied from the drive transistor. The pixel circuit includes a correction unit that corrects the input voltage held by a capacitive part before the emission period or at the beginning of the emission period, in order to cancel the dependence of the output current on the carrier mobility. The correction unit operates during part of a sampling period in response to control signals supplied from scan lines. Specifically, the correction unit extracts the output current from the drive transistor while the video signal is sampled, and negatively feeds back the output current to the capacitive part to thereby correct the input voltage.

Golf club heads with enlarged grooves

Golf club heads with enlarged grooves, wherein a portion of the finish adjacent or within the groove is removed to create the visual appearance of enlarged grooves. The surface finish of the groove enhancement area surrounding the groove is matched to be the same as the surface finish of the groove, preferably a bright, smooth or shiny metallic finish. This surface finish of the remainder of the striking face of the golf club is a second surface finish, preferably a dark or black matte, or rough finish. The contrast between the two finishes gives the perception that the grooves are larger than they are physically.

InactiveUS6993167B1Minimise edge contributionDecrease shiftDiagnostics using lightSurgeryMelanomaHand held
A system for collecting, storing and displaying dermatological images for the purpose of monitoring and diagnosis of skin conditions and skin cancers, including melanoma. A hand-held unit illuminates a section of the patient's skin, and an imaging device generates imaging signals from light derived from a skin section. Pairs of light output ports in the hand-held unit are arranged such that their intensity distributions overlap at their half-intensity levels so that the resulting summation of their intensities has a flat central region. Three image stores are maintained, one for lesion images, one for “nearby skin” images, and one for reference-white images. The “nearby skin” images are used by the system software to automatically determine the skin / lesion border. The reference white images are used to set the dynamic range of the instrument and to compensate for lighting irregularities. Two images of the same lesion taken at different times may be displayed simultaneously so that changes in the lesion may be determined. The calibration system is designed so that image data taken on any of multiple machines built to the same specification will be corrected back to a common reference standard to ensure absolute accuracy in colour rendition.

Using standard current curves to correct non-uniformity in active matrix emissive displays

A plurality of gray level versus OLED current curves are generated by measuring many OLED panels from a stable manufacturing process, and those curves are stored as standard gray level versus OLED current curves. When a new OLED display is manufactured from the process, each of its sub-pixels is characterized as having the characteristics of one of the pre-generated standard gray level versus OLED current curves, based on a gray level versus OLED current measurement at a single gray level. This drastically reduces the time it takes to determine the TFT gate voltage versus OLED current characteristics of the sub-pixels in the OLED display. The OLED display can use the selected one of the pre-generated standard gray level versus OLED current curves to correct non-uniformities of the sub-pixels in the OLED display caused by non-uniform TFTs in the active matrix.

Efficient retry mechanism for solid-state memory failures

A data storage subsystem is disclosed that implements a solid-state data buffering scheme. Prior to completion of programming in solid-state storage media, data that is formatted for storage in solid-state media is maintained in one or more buffers. The system is able to retry failed programming operations directly from the buffers, rather than reprocessing the data. The relevant programming pipeline may therefore be preserved by skipping over a failed write operation and reprocessing the data at the end of the current pipeline processing cycle.

Liquid crystal display device achieving imaging with high s/n ratio using invisible light

A liquid crystal panel brightness controller notifies a backlight controller that an illuminance of ambient light is equal to or less than a threshold value. Upon notification, the backlight controller causes invisible light emitted, for example. The invisible light passes through a liquid crystal panel and is reflected by an imaging target and is received by photosensors. Accordingly, the decrease in the amount of the visible light received by photosensors is compensated. As a result, an image with a high S / N ratio is obtained.

Methods and apparatus for advanced wind turbine design

A wind turbine system includes a variable blade assembly including adjustable sails and wing shaped masts expanding the wind velocity capture envelope. The blade assembly turns a hydraulic pump, which pressurizes fluid and stores the pressurized fluid in a chamber in the support tower. Pressurized fluid is directed via an electronically controllable proportioning valve to a hydraulic motor which is coupled to an electric generator. A computer control module operates the proportioning valve regulating pressure to the hydraulic motor, maintaining generator rotational speed, and providing consistent output frequency to the power grid. Stored energy in the high pressure tank is used to continue generator operation after the winds cease, allowing early warning notification to the power management system of impending power loss. Residual pressure maintained in the high pressure tank allows restart operations via hydraulic pressure rather than power grid energy drain. On site high energy capacitors store additional energy.
