A wireless (e.g., radio) system and method for automatic water level maintenance of, e.g., a swimming pool utilizing capacitive liquid level sensing. A reference electrode allows water level sensing independent of the water chemistry or temperature. Capacitive electrodes having areas larger than the reference electrode sense various liquid levels when the liquid covers an area of any sensing electrode equal to the area of the reference electrode. Averaging is incorporated to filter out effects of wind or other disturbances. Upon sensing a given condition, the transmitter transmits a sensed condition to a remote receiver for control of valves and pumps for changing the water level in the pool. The receiver includes safety timers for filling and emptying to protect against equipment failure or communications faults. User selectable identification allows identical such radio systems to operate within proximity to each other. Power saving features are used to extend battery life.

Apparatus and method for purifying water with an immersed galvanic cell

A water purification system and method suitable for use in swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, water storage tanks, wells and water cooling towers employs a galvanic cell having a silver or copper or zinc anode electrically connected to a cathode made from a metal of still higher electrochemical potential, normally a platinum group metal and preferably palladium. A galvanic cell of some tens of square centimeters in size and some hundreds of grams in weight liberates sufficient silver or copper ions so as to treat a multi-thousand liter body of water, such as a swimming pool, for, typically under normal contamination, some months until the anode is consumed. Copper and / or silver ions liberated from the galvanic cell suppress bacterial, fungal and / or algae growth, thus, significantly reducing the amount of chlorine, bromine or other chemicals needed to maintain water quality. The invention operates on the current generated by the galvanic action between the dissimilar metals of the anode and cathode, and does not require external electrical power.

An inline chlorinator with a housing having an inlet end and an outlet end in communication with the swimming pool bringing water from the pool through the inlet end and back to the pool from the outlet end and an upper compartment having an electronics section is provided. It includes a power source coupling and an at least one sensor sensing changes in the power source coupling. A controller unit contained within the electronics section, the controller unit being electrically coupled to a power source and an at least one electrolytic plate. An at least one hours of operation counter is provided. A heat sink member is also provided and is in thermal communication with the controller, where the flow of the water in the swimming pool water purification system cools the heat sink member, controller unit, and the electronics in the electronics section. Where the heat sink is separated from the water coming in the inlet end by a separation section, the separation section being a concurrent wall of the electronics compartment and the separation section in direct contact with the water coming from the pool at the inlet end, the separation section being in direct contact with the heat sink and both the heat sink and the separation section being continually cooled by the water flowing in through the inlet end of the housing.

A system is disclosed which utilizes air conditioning waste to heat a second fluid such as swimming pool water. The second condenser for pool water heating is connected in parallel with the air conditioning condenser. An accumulator is connected between the condensers and the expansion valve to absorb fluctuations in refrigerant level due to different operating conditions caused by the pool water heating, thereby ensuring that liquid refrigerant is always supplied to the expansion valve. A controller reads the ambient air temperature at the air conditioning condenser and reads the air conditioning system condensing pressure and uses an algorithm to compute ambient air fan speed at the air conditioning condenser based on these two inputs to maintain a consistent heated pool water temperature.
An alternate system includes first and second condensers connected in series with an accumulator connected between the second condenser and the expansion valve and a pressure equalization line connected between the compressor and the accumulator. A controller reads the ambient air temperature at the air conditioning condenser and reads the air conditioning system condensing pressure and uses an algorithm to compute ambient air fan speed at the air conditioning condenser based on these two inputs to maintain a consistent heated pool water temperature.

An automated system for monitoring and maintaining fluid level in a swimming pool, spa, or other environment containing water is provided. The system includes a sensor assembly having a microprocessor and a proximity sensor encapsulated in a non-conductive material. A lower section of the sensor assembly has a flat profile and at least a portion of the proximity sensor is positioned in the lower section. The sensor assembly transmits a signal to a remote controller when the water level measured is above or below a predetermined target value. The remote controller in turn causes a remote water valve to turn on or off. In certain implementations, the sensor assembly incorporates a precision mounting system and algorithm, which work together to provide the end user with a means to mount the sensor easily and maintain precise operational level of the water. The combination of the physical mounting system and the range and resolution of the proximity sensor allow for precise maintenance of water level at the preferred level.
