Data processing apparatus and method

A data processing apparatus communicates data bits on a predetermined number of sub-carrier signals of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) symbol. The data processing apparatus comprises a parity interleaver operable to perform parity interleaving on Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) encoded data bits obtained by performing LDPC encoding according to a parity check matrix of an LDPC code including a parity matrix corresponding to parity bits of the LDPC code, the parity matrix having a stepwise structure, so that a parity bit of the LDPC encoded data bits is interleaved to a different parity bit position. A mapping unit maps the parity interleaved bits onto data symbols corresponding to modulation symbols of a modulation scheme of the OFDM sub-carrier signals. A symbol interleaver is arranged in operation to read-into a symbol interleaver memory the predetermined number of data symbols for mapping onto the OFDM sub-carrier signals, and to read-out of the interleaver memory the data symbols for the OFDM sub-carriers to effect the mapping, the read-out being in a different order than the read-in, the order being determined from a set of addresses, with the effect that the data symbols are interleaved on the sub-carrier signals. The set of addresses are generated by an address generator which has been optimised to interleave the data symbols on to the sub-carrier signals of the OFDM carrier signals for a given operating mode of the OFDM system, such as a 32K operating mode for DVB-T2 or DVB-C2.

A method, system, and program for maintaining application operations within a suboptimal grid environment are provided. An application profile expresses the operational requirements of an application across multiple heterogeneous resource platforms and expresses the priority of modular breakdown of an application so that usage of resources by the application can be adjusted when suboptimal conditions are detected for the application. The application is submitted to at least one resource node from among multiple resource nodes within a grid environment. Then, a service availability management agent monitors a performance status of the at least one resource node. The service availability management agent compares the performance status with an operational requirement specified for the platform of the at least one resource node in the application profile. If the performance status does not meet the operational requirement, then the service availability management agent adjusts the use by the application the resource nodes according to the application profile, such that the application continues to operate when suboptimal conditions arise in a grid environment.

Recursive and trellis-based feedback reduction for MIMO-OFDM with rate-limited feedback

Techniques are provided for reducing feedback while maintaining performance in a MIMO-OFDM system. The disclosed techniques employ finite-rate feedback methods that uses vector quantization compression. The disclosed methods / techniques generally involve: receiving a plurality of symbols from a plurality of sub-carriers at a receiver; selecting a plurality of indices of codewords corresponding to a codebook of pre-coding weighting matrices for the sub-carriers based on vector quantization compression of the codewords; and transmitting the selected indices over a wireless channel to a transmitter. Finite state vector quantization feedback makes use of a finite state vector quantizer (FSVQ), which is a recursive vector quantizer (VQ) with a finite number of states. In finite state vector quantization feedback, optimal precoding matrices (beamforming vectors) are selected sequentially across subcarriers. In a trellis-based feedback method, the optimal precoding matrices are selected at the same time for all subcarriers by searching for the optimum choice of matrices along a trellis using the Viterbi algorithm (dynamic programming).

A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal based display is embedded inside a lightguide illuminator sheet which provides illumination of the display without the need for a backlight or frontlight. Light from one or more light sources is coupled into the lightguide sheet and is guided within a range of high angles of incidence within the sheet by total internal reflection. The guided light illuminating portions of the display which are in diffusing state is scattered such that some of the light is allowed to escape total internal reflection, providing visibility of the display. Combining multiple lightguide embedded displays can be used to provide a three-dimensional display. When a low refractive index cladding is applied to the surfaces of the lightguide embedded display, the display is robust in a dirty environment, and / or can be laminated to adjacent lightguide embedded displays. The use of one or more coupled light sources, such as light emitting diodes, provides color by combining one or more colored light sources or by time-sequentially driving one or more colored light sources. The lightguide illuminator embedded display may further be used as a content dependent active backlight for an LCD display panel to provide improved dynamic contrast.

Methods, apparatus and computer program products are provided for distributing communication packets over multiple concurrent parallel links between a first node and a second node in a communication network based upon link quality information for the links. By utilizing link quality information from the links, the rate at which packets are provided to the links may be made proportional to the quality of the link, and thus, the link's ability to transmit the packet. The rate at which packets are provided to links may be reduced when error rates on a link exceed a specified threshold and eliminated when error rates exceed a higher threshold. Alternatively, timing delays from errors on a link may be used to determine a delay factor for a link and packets scheduled to the links based on the link with the lowest delay. The present invention is particularly useful in High Performance Routing Multilink Transmission Groups.
