A canal hearing device with a dual acoustic seal system for preventing feedback while minimizing occlusion effects. The two-part device comprises a main module and an elongated tubular insert for conducting sound to the tympanic membrane and sealing within the bony region of the ear canal. The main module is positioned in the cartilaginous portion of the ear canal. The tubular insert comprises a sound conduction tube and a cylindrically hollow primary seal medially positioned in the bony region. The device also comprises a secondary seal laterally positioned in the cartilaginous region. The secondary seal, although providing additional acoustic sealing for the prevention of feedback, is sufficiently vented to provide a path of least acoustic resistance for occlusion sounds within the ear canal. In a preferred embodiment, the tubular insert comprises a coiled skeletal frame to provide high radial flexibility while maintaining sufficient axial rigidity for comfortable, kink-resistant, and consistent placement within the ear canal.

Moreover, in one embodiment, the earpiece auditory device includes a connector physically coupling the behind-the-ear component to the completely-in-canal component. Recursive and trellis-based feedback reduction for MIMO-OFDM with rate-limited feedback

Techniques are provided for reducing feedback while maintaining performance in a MIMO-OFDM system. The disclosed techniques employ finite-rate feedback methods that uses vector quantization compression. The disclosed methods / techniques generally involve: receiving a plurality of symbols from a plurality of sub-carriers at a receiver; selecting a plurality of indices of codewords corresponding to a codebook of pre-coding weighting matrices for the sub-carriers based on vector quantization compression of the codewords; and transmitting the selected indices over a wireless channel to a transmitter. Finite state vector quantization feedback makes use of a finite state vector quantizer (FSVQ), which is a recursive vector quantizer (VQ) with a finite number of states. In finite state vector quantization feedback, optimal precoding matrices (beamforming vectors) are selected sequentially across subcarriers. In a trellis-based feedback method, the optimal precoding matrices are selected at the same time for all subcarriers by searching for the optimum choice of matrices along a trellis using the Viterbi algorithm (dynamic programming).

A Node B groups sub-carriers available to the OFDM system into sub-carrier groups, each having at least two sub-carriers, transmits data to the UE on sub-carriers in the sub-carrier groups, selects at least one sub-carrier group for the UE based on channel condition information about each of the sub-carrier groups received from the UE, and assigns the selected sub-carrier group to the UE.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for applying successive multi-rank beamforming strategies (e.g., successive preceding strategies) for the design of precoders over a set of parallel channels. Successive beamforming is applied to a narrow band channel model and is also applied for finer quantization of a single beamforming vector (e.g., recursive beamforming). A first embodiment provides the optimal approach with high complexity. An alternative embodiment provides successive beamforming for near optimal preceding selection with medium complexity. A low complexity method for precoder selection is also provided wherein a channel representative matrix for the set of parallel channels is determined and successive beamforming on the calculated channel representative is applied.
