A fiber reinforced core panel is formed from strips of plastics foam helically wound with layers of rovings to form webs which may extend in a wave pattern or may intersect transverse webs. Hollow tubes may replace foam strips. Axial rovings cooperate with overlying helically wound rovings to form a beam or a column. Wound roving patterns may vary along strips for structural efficiency. Wound strips may alternate with spaced strips and spacers between the strips enhance web buckling strength. Continuously wound rovings between spaced strips permit folding to form panels with reinforced edges. Continuously wound strips are helically wrapped to form annular structures, and composite panels may combine both thermoset and thermoplastic resins.

This invention related to a tissue-adhesive sheet comprising a homogeneous, preformed and cross-linked matrix formed from one or more polymers, and having at least one surface that, in use, is exposed, at least one of said one or more polymers being a synthetic polymer and having appendant functional groups of a first form, cross-linking of said matrix being via a proportion of said functional groups of the first form, and the remainder of said functional groups of the first form being free. The sheet is particularly useful as a tissue adhesive and sealant, and is intended for topical application to internal and external surfaces of the body for therapeutic reasons. The invention further relates to sheets comprising a scaffold material, three-dimensional articles formed from similar material to that of the sheet and to implantable medical devices coated with such material.

A switch comprises two substrates coated with conductive elements opposed to each other across a gap. At least one of the conductive elements comprises an intrinsically conductive polymer. The switch completes an electrical circuit when one of substrates is pressed toward the other of the substrates and the two conductive elements touch. The polarity applied to the intrinsically conductive polymer coating is, preferably, negative. The voltage applied to the electrical circuit, is, preferably, less than five volts; more preferably, the voltage applied to the electrical circuit is less than three volts; even more preferably, the voltage applied to the electrical circuit is less than one volt.

A metallic interconnect structure (200) for connecting a gold bump (205) and a copper pad (212), as used for example in semiconductor flip-chip assembly. A first region (207) of binary AuSn2 intermetallic is adjacent to the gold bump. A region (208) of binary AuSn4 intermetallic is adjacent to the first AuSn2 region. Then, a region (209) of binary gold-tin solid solution is adjacent to the AuSn4 region, and a second region (210) of binary AuSn2 intermetallic is adjacent to the solid solution region. The second AuSn2 region is adjacent to a nickel layer (213) (preferred thickness about 0.08 μm), which covers the copper pad. The nickel layer insures that the gold / tin intermetallics and solutions remain substantially free of copper and thus avoid ternary compounds, providing stabilized gold bump / solder connections.

A high solubility size composition is provided which may be applied to glass fibers useful for reinforcing polymeric materials. The size composition includes: a first film former comprising a polyether-based or polyester-based thermoplastic polyurethane derived from a saturated, non-crosslinkable polyether or polyester; a second film former comprising at least one ingredient selected from i) a vinyl acetate glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and ii) a mixture of a vinyl acetate glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and a vinyl acetate homopolymer; a silane coupling agent; and water. Using glass fibers coated with the high solubility size composition allows the advantageous production of low-pigmented or non-pigmented molded parts having enhanced surface appearance and color uniformity.

A method is disclosed for recycling polymer containers contaminated with oil, for example used HDPE motor oil containers, in an energy efficient manner, that does not require a costly washing step. The commercial value of the polymers is preserved by converting the contaminated polymers into value-added products. Composites are made from discarded motor oil containers, the residual motor oil therein, cellulosic fibers, and blending agents or other additives. In one embodiment, the process uses the residual oil to advantage as a fiber blending agent, or to make polymer types in a blend more compatible with one another.
