Gradient porous implant

ActiveUS20070150068A1Optimize performanceOptimizes various mechanical and biological requirements of the implants performanceAdditive manufacturing apparatusBone implantPorous metalMedical treatment
An implantable medical device includes a porous metal foam or foam-like structure having pores defined by metal struts or webs wherein the porous structure has directionally controlled pore characteristics. The pore characteristics controlled include one or more of the metal structure porosity, pore size, pore shape, pore size distribution and strut thickness. The pore characteristics may vary in one or more directions throughout the structure. Preferably the pore characteristics are controlled to match the porous metal structure to various mechanical and biological requirements of different regions of the structure in order to optimize aspects of the implants performance and may vary not only over the surface of the porous structure but through the depth of the porous structure. The thickness of the porous metal structure may also be modified to establish a thickness profile that optimizes mechanical and biological requirements of the implants performance. Acetabular cup embodiments of the invention are described. Various methods of manufacturing implants having directionally controlled pore characteristics are described.

Curable flame retardant epoxy compositions

A curable flame retardant epoxy resin composition including (a) at least one flame retardant epoxy resin; (b) at least one amphiphilic block copolymer; and (c) a curing agent. Such components are present in the curable composition in the appropriate amounts and ratios such that, upon curing, the block copolymer self-assembles into a nano structure morphology, such as a worm-like micelle morphology. The resulting cured product made from the composition of the present invention has a remarkably increased high fracture resistance; and allows the use of flame retardant epoxies in applications where fracture resistance is an issue.

Method for preparing graphene oxide films and fibers

We report a method of preparation of highly elastic graphene oxide films, and their transformation into graphene oxide fibers and electrically conductive graphene fibers by spinning. Methods typically include: 1) oxidation of graphite to graphene oxide, 2) preparation of graphene oxide slurry with high solid contents and residues of sulfuric acid impurities. 3) preparation of large area films by bar-coating or dropcasting the graphene oxide dispersion and drying at low temperature. 4) spinning the graphene oxide film into a fiber, and 5) thermal or chemical reduction of the graphene oxide fiber into an electrically conductive graphene fiber. The resulting films and fiber have excellent mechanical properties, improved morphology as compared with current graphene oxide fibers, high electrical conductivity upon thermal reduction, and improved field emission properties.

Contact lens materials

A method for reducing the modulus of polymer silicone hydrogel compositions by employing monomeric polysiloxanes endcapped with trimethylsilyl to reduce the crosslinking density of the hydrogel. The synthesis consists of a single vessel acid catalyzed ring opening polymerization and may be employed to produce copolymers useful as hydrogel contact lens materials.

Accommodating intraocular lens device

An intraocular lens (IOL) device comprising a first lens, a second lens and a circumferential haptic. The first lens comprises a pair of opposing and deformable surfaces and a cavity defined therebetween. The first lens has a first lens diameter. The second lens has a second lens diameter. The circumferential haptic has an outer peripheral edge and couples the first lens and the second lens. A main IOL cavity is defined by the circumferential haptic, the first lens and the second lens. The IOL device is resiliently biased to an unaccommodated state, characterized by the IOL device having a first diameter d1 in the absence of radial compressive forces exerted on the outer peripheral edge. The IOL device actuates to an accommodated state being characterized by a second diameter d2 in response to radial compressive forces exerted on the outer peripheral edge, wherein d1>d2.

Method of manufacturing a golf club head

A golf club head has a face portion, a crown portion, a sole portion, a side portion and a hosel portion. Each portion is made of titanium or a titanium alloy. The side portion is formed integrally entirely from its toe side to its back side and its heel side. The side portion and the hosel portion are cast integrally. The face portion, the crown portion and the sole portion are molded separately from one another. The face portion, the crown portion, the sole portion and the side portion are welded integrally so as to form a golf club head. The Young's modulus of the crown portion is lower than any Young's modulus of the face portion, the sole portion, the side portion and the hosel portion.

Fluorosilicone-Based Dielectric Elastomer and Method for its Production

A dielectric elastomer has a film that contains a fluorinated silicone elastomer and has two faces. A coating of a stretchable electrode material is applied to each one of the two faces. The fluorinated silicone elastomer has a modulus of elasticity of maximally 450 kPa. The fluorinated silicone elastomer is a three-dimensionally crosslinked, fluorinated, alkyl group-containing polysiloxane in combination with a fluorinated silicone oil. Alternatively, or in addition, the fluorinated silicone elastomer is a three-dimensional wide-mesh crosslinked, fluorinated, alkyl-group containing polysiloxane whose wide mesh property has been effected by a chain length extension by addition of a chain-shaped silicone molecule containing two Si—H groups to an alkenyl group-containing polysiloxane molecule.

Curatives for epoxy compositions

The invention provides epoxy and oxetane compositions including the novel acyloxy and N-acyl curing agents described herein. Use of invention curing agents result in cured adhesive compositions with remarkably increased adhesion and reduced hydrophilicity when compared to resins cured with other types of curing agents. Furthermore, the curatives of this invention do not interfere with free-radical cure and are thus suited for use in hybrid cure thermoset compositions.
