Crystal gels useful as dental floss with improved high tear, high tensile, and resistance to high stress rupture properties

PCT No. PCT / US97 / 17534 Sec. 371 Date Feb. 3, 1999 Sec. 102(e) Date Feb. 3, 1999 PCT Filed Sep. 30, 1997 PCT Pub. No. WO98 / 14133 PCT Pub. Date Apr. 9, 1998A novel dental floss and gum massager made in the form of a strand, a tape or a sheet of polymeric material, said sheet having selectively positioned multiple sized holes for inserting though and holding by the fingers of the hands. The floss provides substantially very little constriction of blood flow surrounding the fingers as the floss is held taught and the peripheral edge of the floss is being manipulated and worked by the gripping, pulling, pushing, deforming, and guilding back and forth actions of the fingers during massaging of the gums and flossing of the teeth.

Sonic dental device

An electric device which removes supragingival and sub-gingival plaque and undesirable debris from the interproximal surfaces between teeth is described. This device utilizes a combination of sonic energy and dental floss which is secured between two tines, the tines being part of a flexible fork which is removable from a powered handle which contains batteries and an electric motor. The electric motor, which is coupled to an eccentrically mounted disc on an output shaft, revolves at sonic frequencies which in turn generates sonic energy that is transmitted to the flexible fork which holds the floss. The sonic energy is synchronized and in tune with the natural resonance frequencies of the fork thereby stimulating the resonance action of oscillating vertical and / or elliptical movement of the fork which in turn imparts cleaning energy to and enhances the cleaning properties of the floss. The flexible fork may be removed from the handle and replaced with other dental cleaning tools such as a brush, a pick, and / or a tray attachment.

Orthodontic aligners, methods of using such aligners, and additive manufacturing methods and apparatus for making and using such aligners

A system for repositioning teeth comprises a plurality of individual appliances. The appliances are configured to be placed successively on the patient's teeth and to incrementally reposition the teeth from an initial tooth arrangement, through a plurality of intermediate tooth arrangements, and to a final tooth arrangement. The appliances comprise at least 200 layers.

Flossing device with advancing and tensioning mechanism

A hand-held dental flossing device has a housing with a handle that may be held with one hand. A dental floss supply is located in the housing and a winding gear is rotatably mounted to the housing. A free end of the dental floss strand from the floss supply is threaded through the housing into a floss exit arm of the housing where it passes through an exit opening to an exposed area of the flossing arm. Used dental floss returns into the housing, via a receiving opening, where it passes through an optional disinfectant supply before or as it wound onto the winding gear. The housing has an opening where the winding gear extends therefrom and is accessible to the fingers of the user's hand. The winding gear has teeth that cooperate with a stopper to form a one-way ratchet gear. A floss-tensioning button is located in the housing and has first and second ends extending from the housing. The first and second ends are accessible to the user's hand holding the handle of the flossing device. When in a first position, the tensioning button allows the floss strand to be readily advanced by winding the gear while in a second position, the floss strand is relatively taut so that winding the gear will even further tension the strand. The device may have an F-shaped cross-section, enlarged, funnel-shaped openings for the floss to exit and enter the housing, and a disinfectant supply for disinfecting used floss. The device may be reloadable with floss.

Dental Device Comprising a Light Guide and a Light Source

A novel dental device is disclosed for facilitating oral hygiene. The device includes a light source and a light guide, where light from the light source is propagated through the light guide so that it refracts from the end thereof. Through this refraction it at least partially illuminates bristles, or dental floss or a dental pick and in use illuminates, at least partially, teeth and gums within the mouth. Preferably the dental device utilizes a light source of such a wavelength that facilitates killing of bacteria.

Dental floss device

A dental floss device includes a handle having a head piece and a disposable holder for a length of dental floss. The holder includes a base portion and a pair of spaced-apart jaws extending from the base and which extend to embrace the head piece of the handle when the holder is in a correct alignment configuration with respect to the handle. The device has an interlock which ensures that the holder can be interengaged with the head piece only when the holder is correctly aligned with the head piece. The interlock includes a head interlock part provided by interlock grooves and a holder interlock part provided by corresponding interlock tongues. There are two interlock grooves and corresponding interlock tongues which slidably interengage when the holder is correctly aligned with the head piece. If the holder is turned so that it is not correctly aligned with the head piece, the interlock tongues of the holder prevent engagement of the holder with the head piece. Thus there is no risk that a user will incorrectly align and engage the dental floss holder with the head piece.

A dental flossing device is characterized by a flossing circuit comprised of a flossing supply spool and a take-up spool mounted to a housing. The floss feeds from the supply spool along a pair of prongs forming a fork extension of the handle and is stretched across the prongs and appropriately tensioned to be inserted into a users mouth for flossing. To maintain tension, a pair of ratchet pawls are jointly engageable with a ratchet mounted for co-rotation with the take-up spool. The pawls are offset relative to the ratchet teeth to ensure appropriate tension. Tension on the supply spool side of the flosser is achieved with a tension arm in constant engagement with tension teeth co-rotatably mounted with the spool. When a floss advancing trigger is not depressed, a brake pawl formed at one end of the trigger is spring biased into locking engagement with these teeth while the tension arm assures proper tension on the supply side. In an alternative preferred embodiment, only one tensioning ratchet pawl engages the ratchet mounted for co-rotation with the take-up spool. A different ratchet pawl, mounted to one end of a ratchet arm pivotally secured to the flosser housing beneath the ratchet, is engaged by the trigger to drivingly contact the ratchet to rotate the take-up spool. In this latter embodiment, the brake pawl is replaced with a projection formed on the trigger that is adapted to engage the supply spool tensioning ratchet to lock the ratchet in the released position of the trigger to prevent supply spool rotation and maintain the floss circuit in a tight condition.
