Use of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in skin care

InactiveUS20090068255A1Preventing and reducing of and sun damageImprove skin appearanceBiocideCosmetic preparationsWrinkle skinDisease
The application of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors to the skin inhibits the degradation of proteins found in the skin including collagen, elastin, and other basement membrane and extracellular matrix protein. MMP inhibitors may be used in both cosmetic compositions and pharmaceutical compositions for application to skin. MMP inhibitors are formulated with a cosmetically suitable vehicle or pharmaceutically acceptable excipient for application to the skin as creams, lotions, ointments, solutions, face masks, etc. As cosmetics, the inventive MMP inhibitor compositions are applied to the skin to prevent or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation changes, loss of elasticity, or other effects associated with aging or sun damage. As pharmaceuticals, the inventive MMP inhibitor compositions may also be applied to the skin to treat or prevent a skin disease (e.g., proliferative disease, inflammatory disease).

Abrasive cutter containing diamond particles and a method for producing the cutter

An abrasive cutter formed of at least one diamond particle, preferably at least one mono-diamond crystal and metallic binder material distinguished by the fact that the diamond particle (D) has a size of about 50 mum to about 500 mum and each diamond particle (D) is enclosed by a coating (H) produced in a fluidized bed with the coating having a wall thickness of about 10 mum to about 200 mum. The volume of the coating (H) constitutes at least 30% of the volume of the diamond particles (D) in the fully consolidated state following individual sintering of the coated diamond particles (D, H). The abrasive cutters can be applied directly onto an abrasive tool. Further they can be processed to form composite cutters or cutting segments. In the method of forming the abrasive cutter, the diamond particle (D) is brought into a fluidized bed reactor and enclosed in a metallic coating (H). Coated diamond particle (D, H) can be processed into larger cutters or segments in each case individually sintered and fixed directly on an abrasive tool.

Augmented stereoscopic visualization for a surgical robot using a captured fluorescence image and captured stereoscopic visible images

An illumination channel, a stereoscopic optical channel and another optical channel are held and positioned by a robotic surgical system. A first capture unit captures a stereoscopic visible image from the first light from the stereoscopic optical channel while a second capture unit captures a fluorescence image from the second light from the other optical channel. An intelligent image processing system receives the captured stereoscopic visible image and the captured fluorescence image and generates a stereoscopic pair of fluorescence images. An augmented stereoscopic display system outputs a real-time stereoscopic image comprising a three-dimensional presentation of a blend of the stereoscopic visible image and the stereoscopic pair of fluorescence images.

Medical device for intraluminal endovascular stenting

A medical device includes a catheter and a stent mounted on the catheter, the stent having a hollow, cylindrical body made with a plurality of rings. The rings each extend circumferentially around the cylindrical body and include an undulating series of peaks and valleys. The rings are joined together by a series of links which are shaped and arranged to promote longitudinal flexibility as the stent is delivered on the catheter and effective scaffolding after deployment. In one aspect of the invention, the rings are provided with inflection points on some portions of the rings which extend in a generally circumferential direction for a short distance. A link is joined at one end at the inflection point on one ring and also joined at a second end at a second inflection point on an adjacent ring. This construction allows the crimped stent to flex longitudinally when it is subjected to bending forces such as those encountered during delivery of the stent and catheter through a tortuous coronary artery.

Boot for treatment of plantar fasciitis

InactiveUS20050131324A1Avoid attenuationMinimize further damageNon-surgical orthopedic devicesGaitFoot dorsiflexion
A boot for use in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. The boot places the foot in the desired amount of dorsiflexion, preferably from 5° to 20°, which stretches the Achilles tendon and is believed to prevent the shortening of the plantar fascia. The boot also provides protection for the foot while walking or engaging in other load bearing activities, to minimize further damage to and / or inflammation of the plantar fascia. The boot has a sole that is shaped to allow as close to a natural walking gait as possible while maintaining the foot in the desired degree of dorsiflexion. Preferably, the amount of dorsiflexion of the foot is controlled through the addition wedges on the base of the boot.

Tail the motion method of generating simulated strobe motion videos and pictures using image cloning

The apparatus generates simulated strobe effects in the form of video or still image output in response to receipt of a video stream, and without the need of additional strobe hardware. Videos of a moving target object are categorized into one of multiple categories, from which a strobe generation process is selected. In one mode, the two categories comprise target objects with either small motion or large motions in relation to the frame size. Interoperation between image registration and cloning are utilized to produce simulated strobe motion videos or pictures. Motion segmentation is applied to the foreground object in each image frame, and a foreground mask is updated as each checkpoint is reached along the object trajectory, such as in response to time differences between checkpoints. Potential applications include special features for camcorders, digital cameras, or computer software.

Tubular stent with oval struts

InactiveUS7153322B2Enhance crimping and symmetric expansion of stentLength of tubeStentsBlood vesselsLongest DiameterEndoluminal stent
A vascular or endoluminal stent is adapted for deployment in a vessel or tract of a patient to maintain an open lumen. The stent constitutes a scaffold formed from a single open-ended tube having a multiplicity of through-holes in its wall. The through-holes are defined by a plurality of struts that bound the holes. Each of the struts has an optimized cross-section of oval shape with a long diameter generally aligned with the length or circumference of the tube wall and a short diameter generally aligned with the thickness of the tube wall. The oval shape of the struts provide several advantages including enhancing flexibility of the stent, easing advancement of the stent through a lumen of the vessel or tract for deployment at a target site therein, protecting the balloon of a balloon catheter on which the stent is tightly crimped, and enhancing expansion of the stent during deployment while maintaining its capability to withstand compression in response to recoil of the vessel or tract following deployment.
