The plantar fascia is the thick connective tissue (aponeurosis) which supports the arch on the bottom (plantar side) of the foot. It runs from the tuberosity of the calcaneus (heel bone) forward to the heads of the metatarsal bones (the bone between each toe and the bones of the mid-foot).

Boot for treatment of plantar fasciitis

InactiveUS20050131324A1Avoid attenuationMinimize further damageNon-surgical orthopedic devicesGaitFoot dorsiflexion
A boot for use in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. The boot places the foot in the desired amount of dorsiflexion, preferably from 5° to 20°, which stretches the Achilles tendon and is believed to prevent the shortening of the plantar fascia. The boot also provides protection for the foot while walking or engaging in other load bearing activities, to minimize further damage to and / or inflammation of the plantar fascia. The boot has a sole that is shaped to allow as close to a natural walking gait as possible while maintaining the foot in the desired degree of dorsiflexion. Preferably, the amount of dorsiflexion of the foot is controlled through the addition wedges on the base of the boot.

Plantar fascia support apparatus

A support apparatus for supporting the plantar fascia of a foot. The support apparatus is made of an elastic material expandable in the width and longitudinal axis of the foot. When in operative position on the foot, the apparatus frictionally remains in place mid the first metatarsal bone and extends behind the heel of the foot above its os calcis bone such that when the foot is caused to bear weight, the apparatus expands along the longitudinal axis of the foot to its limit of expandability such that the arch of the foot is maintained substantially unchanged as the foot alternates between load bearing and non-load bearing orientations.

Plantar fascitis support apparatus

A plantar fascitis foot support apparatus, including a support strap for being positioned in a generally U-shaped configuration along the medial and lateral aspects of the ankle and extending under and supporting the plantar fascia region of the foot. An ankle-encircling retention strap is attached by its opposite ends to the support strap at a substantially right angle thereto for retaining the support strap in a supporting position against the plantar fascia region. The support strap includes an inelastic segment and at least one attached elastic segment for providing controlled stretch of the support strap during placement on the foot and during subsequent movement of the foot while the support is in place. Complementary and releasably-adjustable fastener elements are carried by the retention strap and the support strap for permitting lengthwise adjustment of the support strap relative to the plantar fascia region of the foot. The fastener elements include a first fastener element carried by an outer surface of the retention strap, a second fastener element carried by an inner surface of the support strap for being adjustably-mated with the first fastener element for retaining the support strap and the retention strap in a desired position relative to each other, and a third fastener element carried on an outer surface of the support strap. A fastener cover is carried by the retention strap and has a fourth fastener element carried on an inner surface thereof for mating with the third fastener element of the support strap.

Orthopedic night foot splint

A foot splint for the prevention and rehabilitation of plantar fasciitis by maintaining a wearer's foot and, hence, his plantar fascia, in a preselected amount of dorsiflexion. The foot splint includes a footplate for supporting the wearer's foot, a lateral strut extending along the lower leg of the wearer and having a strap for releaseably attaching the strut to the wearer's leg, and a wrap for wrapping around the foot of the wearer. A soft insole may be provided to cushion the wearer's foot from the footplate. The wrap, insole and footplate provide a comfortable “slipper-like” feel for the wearer. Moreover, the foot splint is particularly suited for use during sleep since it is light-weight and open configuration allows for the wearer to move unimpeded between sleep positions, resulting in a more restful sleep. Moreover, the lateral placement of the strut keeps the rigid portions of the foot splint from inadvertently abrading, striking, or otherwise interfering with the wearer's other leg.

An ultrathin sole strap with a pair of heel tabs and an ultrathin arch strap formed of flexible, non-resilient non-stretch woven microfiber material having an adhesive layer on an underside surface for adhesive application to a foot individually or in combination. The sole strap functions as a tensile load bearing member in the region between the ball and the heel of the foot during the heel contact phase, weight bearing midstance phase, and propulsion phases of a walking gait cycle, to bear major tensile loads and stresses which would otherwise be absorbed primarily by the plantar fascia. The arch strap adhered transversely over the sole support strap and arch of the foot provides additional support and stability.

Apparatus for plantar fasciitis treatment and method for making same

A plantar fasciitis arch support (PFAS) device is presented. The PFAS device is an ergonomic compression device that administers a measured pressure along the tissue on the plantar surface of the foot for purpose of relieving the pain and inflammation of plantar fasciitis. The device works by directly compressing and stretching the plantar fascia in order to relieve pressure at the plantar fascia attachment points. This device differs from current conventional splints that use a dorsiflexion force of the foot and ankle complex to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. The device is small, affordable, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. It targets the fascia directly, stretching the tendon gently through the night rather than indirectly stretching the calf or Achilles tendon.

An orthopedic sandal or shoe to be worn intermittently with and to correct the effects of high heel shoe wear, includes a body with upper and lower surfaces. The upper surface provides equalized pressure support without concentration on the heel or balls of the foot and without arch support. A traction system provides first toe traction without foot rotation relative to the upper surface. A foot securing system is disposed at the upper surface. A heel support at the upper surface interacts with the foot securing system to eliminate toe gripping and strain. A descending slope or dome may be provided at the upper surface to support, spread and downwardly deflect the toes to reverse dorsal-flexing. An elevated forefoot angulation may be provided at the upper surface to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. A rocker bottom may be provided only under the toe area of the lower surface.

Disposable Two-Part Orthotic Foot Support Strap System And Method

A method for treating plantar fasciitis and foot pain utilizes a pre-cut sole support strap and an arch support strap formed of flexible woven material having an adhesive layer on an underside surface that are adhered to a foot individually or in combination. The sole strap is adhered to the skin surface along the sole from the ball of the foot to the heel and the back and lateral sides of the heel, and provides stability and support to the foot and, when subjected to forces induced during walking, absorbs tensile loads and stresses to prevent damage to the plantar fascia by reducing tensile stress carried by the plantar fascia. The arch support strap is adhered transversely over the sole support strap and arch of the foot to maintain the sole support strap in engagement with the sole of the foot and provide additional support and stability.

Methods for treating inflammatory symptoms associated with plantar fasciitis

The present invention relates to a method for treating inflammatory symptoms associated with plantar fasciitis in a foot. The method involves stretching gastrocnemius and soleus muscles associated with the foot by placing the sole of the foot on an inclined ramp surface and cooling at least one portion of the sole of the foot. The method may further involve providing localized pressure to at least one portion of the plantar fascia, and to a portion of the foot below the toes, to cause dorsiflexion thereof.

Method and apparatus for treating plantar fasciitis

A device and method for treating and preventing plantar fasciitis includes a wedge adapted to be placed under the big toe. The wedge has a top surface for supporting the big toe, a first support surface separated from the top surface by a first angle, and a second support separated from the top surface by a second angle. The first and second support surfaces are perpendicular with each other so that one rests on the floor and the other serves as a backstop. The wedge has a first position for inclining the top surface upwardly at the first angle to provide moderate stretching of the plantar fascia, and a second position for inclining the top surface upwardly at the second angle to provide maximum stretching. The first angle is within a range of 20 to 25 degrees, and the second angle is within a range of 65 to 70 degrees.
