Micro-electro-mechanical switch, and methods of making and using it

A micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) switch (10, 110) has an electrode (22, 122) covered by a dielectric layer (23, 123), and has a flexible conductive membrane (31, 131) which moves between positions spaced from and engaging the dielectric layer. At least one of the membrane and dielectric layer has a textured surface (138) that engages the other thereof in the actuated position. The textured surface reduces the area of physical contact through which electric charge from the membrane can tunnel into and become trapped within the dielectric layer. This reduces the amount of trapped charge that could act to latch the membrane in its actuated position, which in turn effects a significant increase in the operational lifetime of the switch.

Apparatus, method and computer program product for manipulating a device using dual side input devices

An apparatus, method and computer program product are provided for using dual side input devices for controlling an electronic device and applications running thereon. According to one technique, a user take some action with respect to an adjustable feature associated with the electronic device (e.g., zoom and / or skew an image on a display screen) by simulating (or actually) bending or twisting the electronic device. According to another technique, the user may cause a region of an image displayed on the front of the device to be magnified by touching the back of the device at a location that corresponds to the region. According to yet another technique, the user may cause a graphical item displayed on the front of the electronic device to be rotated by essentially simulating the grabbing of the item with two or more fingers on either side of the electronic device and rolling the item.

Capacitive dome switch

This is directed to a dome switch that includes a capacitive sensor. A dome switch can include a dome operative to deform to provide tactile feedback to a user. To provide an electrical instruction to the device, the region underneath the dome can define a free space separating conductive regions forming a capacitor. For example, a tip of the dome, a button placed between the dome and a circuit board, or a user's finger can form a first conductor of a capacitor, and a support structure for the dome can include a terminal forming a second conductor completing the capacitor. When the dome deflects, the distance between the conductors can change and provide a measurable capacitance variation, which the device can detect. To protect the dome switch from damage due to contaminants, the terminal can be integrated within a volume of the circuit board such that it is not exposed to the environment of the dome switch. In one implementation, the terminal may not be exposed to air.

Touch panel and method for manufacturing the same

The present invention relates to a resistive-film type touch panel using a transparent conductive polymer film as a transparent electrode film. The touch panel includes a transparent resin sheet and a glass substrate having an ITO film formed thereon. After a solution having a transparent conductive polymer dispersed in a solvent is applied to the undersurface of the transparent resin sheet, the solution is heated and dried in order to form a transparent conductive polymer film. The ITO film and transparent conductive polymer film serve as transparent electrode films that are opposed to each other. When the transparent resin sheet is pressed, the films touch each other. Consequently, a change in resistance corresponding to the pressed position can be detected.

Transmissive key sheet, input keys using transmissive key sheet and electronic equipment with input keys

A transmissive key sheet using translucent resin, which is capable of effective illumination while ensuring the thinness of the entire key sheet as well as suppressing a decrease in light transmission, input keys using the transmissive key sheet, and electronic equipment with the input keys. A transmissive key sheet of input keys comprises a first key sheet unit and a second key sheet unit, the opposite side of the first key sheet unit from key tops and the opposite side of the second key sheet unit from pressure applicators being bonded together with a translucent adhesive. The key tops made of translucent resin are molded integral with a translucent resin film having letters on its under surface to provide the first key sheet unit. The pressure applicators made of translucent resin are molded integral with a translucent resin film to provide the second key sheet unit. The light from a light source on a substrate illuminates keys so that the letters printed on the under surface of the translucent resin film become visible form outside. The pressing of each key top presses a corresponding key switch through the pressure applicator, and the key switch is concavely curved to make a contact with an electrode on the substrate. Thus, key input is provided.
