Using a conflict graph to formally characterize the impact of wireless interference on the performance of multi-hop wireless networks, methods for computing upper and lower bounds on the capacity of a given wireless network are detailed. Besides computing network capacity, the model and method disclosed can also enable or benefit other applications including maximizing fairness and minimizing maximum link utilization.

An apparatus and method for image-based three-dimensional hyperrealistic head modeling are provided. The method used to create a three-dimensional hyperrealistic head model includes: detecting frontal and side features in the input frontal and side images; generating a three-dimensional head model by fitting a three-dimensional universal model using the detected facial features; according to the input generating realistic textures from front and side images; and mapping said textures onto a 3D head model. In the described apparatus and method, data obtained using relatively inexpensive equipment such as digital cameras can be processed in an automated manner, and satisfactory results can be obtained even from imperfect input data. In other words, facial features can be extracted in an automated manner and using stable "human quality" facial analysis algorithms.

Method of three-dimensional object reconstruction from a video sequence using a generic model

In a novel method of 3D modeling of an object from a video sequence using an SfM algorithm and a generic object model, the generic model is incorporated after the SfM algorithm generates a 3D estimate of the object model purely and directly from the input video sequence. An optimization framework provides for comparison of the local trends of the 3D estimate and the generic model so that the errors in the 3D estimate are corrected. The 3D estimate is obtained by fusing intermediate 3D reconstructions of pairs of frames of the video sequence after computing the uncertainty of the two frame solutions. The quality of the fusion algorithm is tracked using a rate-distortion function. In order to combine the generic model with the 3D estimate, an energy function minimization procedure is applied to the 3D estimate. The optimization is performed using a Metropolis-Hasting sampling strategy.

System and method for fast on-line learning of transformed hidden Markov models

A fast variational on-line learning technique for training a transformed hidden Markov model. A simplified general model and an associated estimation algorithm is provided for modeling visual data such as a video sequence. Specifically, once the model has been initialized, an expectation-maximization (“EM”) algorithm is used to learn the one or more object class models, so that the video sequence has high marginal probability under the model. In the expectation step (the “E-Step”), the model parameters are assumed to be correct, and for an input image, probabilistic inference is used to fill in the values of the unobserved or hidden variables, e.g., the object class and appearance. In one embodiment of the invention, a Viterbi algorithm and a latent image is employed for this purpose. In the maximization step (the “M-Step”), the model parameters are adjusted using the values of the unobserved variables calculated in the previous E-step. Instead of using batch processing typically used in EM processing, the system and method according to the invention employs an on-line algorithm that passes through the data only once and which introduces new classes as the new data is observed is proposed. By parameter estimation and inference in the model, visual data is segmented into components which facilitates sophisticated applications in video or image editing, such as, for example, object removal or insertion, tracking and visual surveillance, video browsing, photo organization, video compositing, and meta data creation.

The basic modeling concept is that after the spectrums are collected and are pre-processed, a common characteristic wavelength range of all the types of the fruits is screened by using a moving window partial least square method; common characteristic wavelength points are further extracted in the common characteristic wavelength range by using an SPA (Super Pairwise Alignment) algorithm; finally, a PLS model or an MLR (Multiple Linear Regression) model is established by using existing software. According to the method, the determination accuracy is high and the feasibility is strong; the disadvantages that the different types of the fruits need to be detected by classes in an existing near-infrared detection technology are overcome; the modeling cost is reduced, the working efficiency is improved and the number of the modeling wavelength points is few; the near-infrared universal model detection method is applicable to a common optical filter type near-infrared instrument.

Universal model predictive controller

A method for building robust model predictive controller universally applicable is presented based on the innate process characteristics independent of the method of control actuation. The method of universal MPC design permits proper configuration of requisite regulatory control loops for measured and unmeasured disturbance rejections consistent with the underlying innate process characteristics and their embedding within the overall process unit model predictive controller. The method of universal MPC design requires that manipulated variables process value based model (PV-based models) be used in control and optimization in place of the customary set point based models (SP-based models) or control output based models (OP-based models). The PV-based models are devoid of the manipulated variables regulatory controllers response and tuning. Based on the PV-based models, an alternate method of MPC called PV-based MPC is presented that is most robust and adaptable of possible three types of MPC. Based on the universal MPC design, the prior art MPC can be adapted to improve its robustness at or near control valve saturation.
