Complexes and imprints of selected target-binding molecules are also provided. The subject selection methods are used to identify oligonucleotide and nonnucleotide molecules with desirable properties for use in pharmaceuticals, drug discovery, drug delivery, diagnostics, medical devices, cosmetics, agriculture, environmental remediation, smart materials, packaging, microelectronics and nanofabrication. Single oligonucleotide molecules with desirable binding properties are selected from diverse sequence libraries and identified by amplification and sequencing. Polycyclonic vacuum collectors for virtually non-stop environmental remediation

A vacuum collector is provided comprising a suction hose, a first drum with a cover having a cylindrical head capable of generating powerful, small-diameter cyclones, a second drum capable of generating large-diameter cyclones, and a stack of three modules containing vacuum-producing motors atop a HEPA filter atop primary filters. The suction hose is connected to the inlet of the small-diameter cyclone-generating head on the cover of the first drum. The stack of modules containing motors, HEPA filter, and primary filters is mounted on the second drum. The two cyclonic drums communicate through a flexible vacuum hose. When the vacuum-producing motors pull air from the interior of the vacuum collector, the suction hose sucks atmospheric air mixed with contaminants from a surface into the head, which spins the contaminant-laden air-stream into a powerful, small-diameter cyclone. As a result of cyclonic action, the contaminant laden air-stream spirals to the bottom of the first drum, deposits most of its contaminants, reverses course, exits the drum, and enters the second drum, where it spins into a large-diameter cyclone, deposits more contaminants, passes through the primary and HEPA filters, and exhausts via the vacuum-producing motors. Collectors comprising more than two communicating cyclonic drums for tailored environmental remediation are also described.

Novel multifunctional materials for in-situ environmental remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons

Effective in-situ injection technology for the remediation of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE) benefits from the use of decontamination agents that effectively migrate through the soil media, and react efficiently with both dissolved TCE and bulk TCE. A novel decontamination system contains highly uniform carbon microspheres preferably in the optimal size range for transport through the soil. The microspheres are preferably enveloped in a polyelectrolyte (such as carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) to which preferably a bimetallic nanoparticle system of zerovalent iron and Pd is attached. The carbon serves as a strong adsorbent to TCE, while the bimetallic nanoparticles system provides the reactivity. The polyelectrolyte serves to stabilize the carbon microspheres in aqueous solution. The overall system resembles a colloidal micelle with a hydrophilic shell (the polyelectrolyte coating) and a hard hydrophobic core (carbon). In contact with bulk TCE, there is a sharp partitioning of the system to the TCE side of the interface due to the hydrophobicity of the core. These multifunctional systems appear to satisfy criteria related to remediation and are relatively inexpensive and made with potentially environmentally benign materials. An aerosol process is preferably used to produce zerovalent iron particles supported on carbon. A method of lubricating includes creating carbon microspheres produced from a monosaccharide or polysaccharide, the carbon microspheres having a diameter of 50 nm to 6 microns, coating the microspheres with a surface coating and using the carbon microspheres as a lubricant.

Oxidant and method for remedying organic contaminated soil/underground water

The invention relates to an oxidant and a method for remedying organic contaminated soil/underground water, belonging to the field of soil environment remediation. The oxidant comprises sodium persulfate, ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide. The remedying method comprises the following steps: measuring the contents of organic contaminations in the contaminated soil/underground water; putting the contaminated soil/underground water in a closed container; adding the ferrous sulfate or a ferrous sulfate complex till the concentration of ferrous ions is 20-200mg/L; adding a sodium persulfate solution till the concentration of sodium persulfate is 5-50g/L; adding hydrogen peroxide containing 30 volume percent of an activator 2 by controlling the addition amount to be 2-20 percent; and adding an appropriate amount of deionzed water, uniformly mixing, and then reacting for 6-48 hours. The ferrous sulfate and the hydrogen peroxide of the oxidant are wide in sources, is low in cost and is easily obtained; compared with sodium persulfate activated singly by the hydrogen peroxide, the consumption amount of the oxidant disclosed by the invention is reduced, and the remediation safety is relatively good; the ferrous sulfate and the hydrogen peroxide are jointly used as the activator, and the oxidation effect of the oxidant disclosed by the invention is better than that of sodium persulfate activated by a single activator, and the application contamination range is relatively wide.
