General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet oriented mobile data standard on the 2G and 3G cellular communication network's global system for mobile communications (GSM). GPRS was established by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in response to the earlier CDPD and i-mode packet-switched cellular technologies. It is now maintained by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

Integrated radio telecommunications network and method of interworking an ANSI-41 network and the general packet radio service (GPRS)

An integrated radio telecommunications network which integrates an ANSI-41 circuit switched network and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) packet data network to support a mobile station which operates in both the ANSI-41 network and the GPRS network. An interworking function interfaces a mobile switching center (MSC) in the ANSI-41 network with a serving GPRS switching node (SGSN) in the GPRS network by mapping circuit switched signaling utilized by the MSC into GPRS packet switched signaling utilized by the SGSN, and mapping GPRS packet switched signaling into circuit switched signaling. An interworking GPRS base station controller interfaces the SGSN with a GPRS / ANSI-136 base station which supports both ANSI-136 operations and GPRS operations. The interworking GPRS base station controller adapts the traffic signaling format utilized by the SGSN into an air interface traffic signaling format utilized by the GPRS / ANSI-136 base station. An authentication center interface passes the authentication state of the mobile station between an ANSI-41 home location register / authentication center (HLR / AC) in the ANSI-41 network, and a GPRS home location register / authentication center (HLR / AUC) in the GPRS network.

Wireless access of packet based networks

A General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Accessed Extended Mobile Internet Protocol (EMIP) [G-EMIP] network is provided for wireless mobile device access to external packet data networks. Domains are defined to incorporate a subnet of standard GPRS and EMIP network entities accessed through a Domain Router. Packet access at the radio interface is provided using the base station portion of a GPRS network. Wireless link specific processing is relegated to this potion of the G-EMIP network. EMIP is utilized as a backbone network to provide mobility and service management and interconnection to external networks. A GPRS-IP Interworking entity (GII) interworks IP and GPRS protocols between GPRS and IP addressable network entities (i.e., translates messages of each protocol to corresponding messages of the other protocol). Mobility-related functionality is handled at the IP (network) layer. Mobile IP is used to support the macro-mobility and Handoff-Aware Wireless Access Internet Infrastructure (HAWAII) is used to support micro-mobility and paging. The Domain Router provides packet service management and interacts with a Home Location Register / Authentication Center, which provides GRPS registration, authentication and encryption.

Prepaid subscriber service for packet-switched and circuit-switched radio telecommunications networks

A system and method of providing a prepaid subscriber service to a mobile subscriber in an integrated wireless telecommunications network having a circuit-switched portion and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) packet-switched portion. A prepaid subscriber class (PPSC) is stored in a home location register (HLR), and the PPSC is sent from the HLR to a serving mobile switching center (MSC) when the subscriber registers in the circuit-switched portion of the network. The PPSC is sent from the HLR to a serving GPRS support node (SGSN) when the subscriber registers in the packet-switched portion of the network. Also, the PPSC may be sent from the SGSN to a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) in order to indicate that the subscriber is a prepaid subscriber. When the mobile subscriber begins a packet-switched data session, the SGSN, GGSN, or both periodically send partial call data records (CDRs) to a prepaid center (PPC). When the mobile subscriber begins a circuit-switched call, the MSC periodically sends partial CDRs to the PPC. The PPC calculates in near real time, a new account balance for the prepaid subscriber. The current call is disconnected, and prepaid services are stopped when the account balance is reduced to zero.

Method and arrangement for transferring information in a packet radio service with application-based choice of release mode

A method as described by which an application executing in an application layer of a multi-layer communication protocol forming part of a general packet radio service (GPRS) session can signal for the setup and release of Temporary Block Flow (TBF) which will not be released during application execution in silent (inactive) periods. When applications such as voice, telnet or web browsing have specific traffic type data that have inactive periods between active periods are to be carried over GPRS, the session consists of multiple active periods. Current TBF release procedures lead to multiple TBF setups during such sessions. With the method described, a special type of TBF can be set up with special procedures for release of this TBF which greatly minimizes the need for multiple TBF setups during a session containing data transfers with inactive periods between active data transmissions.

General packet radio service tunneling protocol (GTP) packet filter

A method of filtering data packets in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Tunneling Protocol (GTP) signaling messages. Selected messages from GTP Path Management, GTP Tunnel Management, GTP Mobility Management, and GTP Location Management messages are analyzed against a plurality of filtering criteria, and data packets that do not meet the filtering criteria are dropped while data packets that meet the criteria are passed. The data packets may be analyzed to verify that they contain correct source, destination, and mask addresses, and that they contain UDP / TCP port numbers that are consistent with the GTP version number. The packets are also inspected at the GTP level, layer-5, and based on the GTP version, information in the GTP header, and accompanying Information Elements (IEs), selected data packets are dropped.

Dynamic IP address allocation system and method

In a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network, a system and method of dynamically allocating an Internet Protocol (IP) address to a mobile terminal (MT) operating in the network. A Gateway GPRS Service Node (GGSN) requests IP addresses over the Gi interface from a Radius server in an IP-based network. A Conditional PDP Address (CPA) parameter is stored in the MT's Home Location Register (HLR) as part of the user subscriber data, and is passed to the GGSN during the GPRS Attach procedure. The CPA parameter indicates whether the subscriber is entitled to a backup IP address in case of failure to obtain one over the Gi interface, and whether the MT is a user of a real-time application. A timer in the GGSN sets a maximum time period (Ti) that the GGSN will wait for a response from the server, and a counter (Ni) sets the maximum number of requests that are sent. A Network Access Server (NAS) in the GGSN sends a request for an IP address from the GGSN to the server, and determines whether Ti expires without receiving a response from the server. If no response is received, the GGSN allocates an IP address. A public IP address is allocated only if the MT is a user of a real-time application. Otherwise, a private IP address is allocated.

Home location server and call processing method in a hybrid second/third generation radio telecommunications network

A Home Location Server (HLS) and method of processing an incoming real-time call to a Mobile Station (MS) in a hybrid radio telecommunications network having both second generation (2G) and third generation (3G) service nodes. When a request for location information for the called MS is received in the HLS from an interrogating switch where the incoming call originated, the HLS determines whether the called MS is located in a 2G Mobile Switching Center (MSC), or a 3G Call State Control Function (CSCF). If neither, the HLS concludes that the called MS is located in an Serving General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node (SGSN). A 3G flag, which is set in the subscriber profile when the MS registers with a 3G SGSN, is checked to determine whether the SGSN is a 2G SGSN or a 3G SGSN. If the SGSN is a 2G SGSN, the HLS informs the interrogating switch that the MS is not available for the real-time call. If the SGSN is a 3G SGSN, the HLS orders the SGSN to page the MS and determine whether the MS accepts the incoming call.
