Hot and cold therapy device

A therapy device incorporating a thermoelectric (Peltier) cell to enable therapeutic temperatures to be applied to a body. As current passes through the cells, heat is transferred from one surface of the cell to the other. Opposite directional current changes the heat transfer direction. A heat sink may be in thermal communication with the thermoelectric cell to permit low temperatures to be achieved for a significant period of time without overheating of the thermoelectric cell. A fan may be positioned adjacent the heat sink to keep the heat sinks cool. In some arrangements, pouches containing a fluid are used as an intermediary between the thermoelectric cell and the body of the user. One arrangement includes multiple heating / cooling units installed into a vest for the targeted treatment of back problems.

Extending achievable duty cycle range in dc/dc forward converter with active clamp reset

Novel system and methodology are provided for controlling a DC / DC forward converter having a transformer with primary and secondary windings, a reset switch, and a first switch coupled to the primary winding of the transformer. The control system involves a PWM control circuit responsive to an output signal of the converter for producing a PWM signal to control switching of the reset switch, and the first switch. A period of the PWM signal includes an on-time interval for enabling transfer of power via the transformer when the first switch is on, and a reset time interval for enabling reset of the transformer when the reset switch is on. A first delay period is set between time when the reset switch turns off and time when the first switch turns on. A first delay control circuit is provided for reducing the first delay time when the on-time interval approaches the maximum value. Further, the converter may include a second switch coupled to the secondary winding of the transformer. A second delay period shorter than the first delay period may be set between time when the reset switch turns off and time when the second switch turns on. Data synchronization hardware primitive in an embedded symmetrical multiprocessor computer

An embedded symmetrical multiprocessor system includes arbitration logic that determines which central processing unit has access to shared memory. Upon grant of access, the memory address is stored in a memory address register. An address compare circuit compares the access address of any other central processing unit with this stored address. Upon a match, the arbitration logic stalls the second accessing central processing unit until expiration of a programmable number of wait states following the first access. These wait states give the first central processing unit enough time to determine the state of a lock variable and take control of an operation protected by the lock variable. The application boot code can determine how long the read-check-write operation requires and program that value into the wait-state generator.

Method for controlling boiling water reactor vessel chemistry

A method for controlling vessel chemistry in a boiling water reactor (BWR) includes a targeted injection of hydrazine (N2H4) to overcome intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and provide other advantages. The method does not require the injection of hydrogen as a reducing species nor the costly equipment needed to store and control the injection of hydrogen, but it is optional. The method involves: 1) adding a carefully selected amount of N2H4 at a carefully selected location such that reaction with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is targeted for reduction prior to treated vessel water (feed water combined with steam dryer / separator liquid effluent) entering the reactor core and 2) providing sufficient residence time to keep all but a tolerable amount of the N2H4 from entering the reactor core. The method may also include the steps of: 1) examining vessel water upstream of the reactor core to assess the type and amount of N2H4 fragments and 2) calculating and / or externally measuring electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP) from the type and amount of N2H4 fragments. That is, the injection of N2H4 may be used to control in-vessel chemistry, but can also be used as a tool to monitor vessel chemistry and determine vessel ECP.
