Architectures of sensor networks for biological and chemical agent detection and identification

A sensor network provides the ability to detect, classify and identify a diverse range of agents over a large area, such as a geographical region or building. The network possesses speed of detection, sensitivity, and specificity for the diverse range of agents. Different functional level types of sensors are employed in the network to perform early warning, broadband detection and highly specific and sensitive detection. A high probability of detection with low probability of false alarm is provided by the processing of information provided from multiple sensors. A Bayesian net is utilized to combine probabilities from the multiple sensors in the network to reach a decision regarding the presence or absence of a threat. The network is field portable and capable of autonomous operation. It also is capable of providing automated output decisions.

Self-cleaning adhesive structure and methods

A method and apparatus for transporting an object from one workstation to another, or for manipulating an object within a workstation, where the object or workstations may be contaminated with unwanted dirt or dust particles, are disclosed. The object is gripped at one work station with a movable transfer arm a movable transfer arm having an end effector composed of an array of nano-scale projections, where each projection provides one or more distal contact ends, the density of contact ends is such as to grip a surface of the object with an intermolecular force sufficient to hold the object for movement, where the relative sizes of the object and particles are such that the object makes contact with severalfold times of the number of contact ends than contacted by such particles. After moving the gripped object to the other workstation, the end effector is manipulated to release the gripped object at the other workstation. Before, during or after transport of the object, the arm's end effector is brought into contact with a cleaning surface having a surface energy interaction with particles carried on said effector as great or greater than the surface energy interaction between particles and effector, thereby to transfer such particles to the cleaning surface. Also disclosed is an apparatus for transporting small elements or objects in a nano- or micro-fabrication assembly or in printing, and a self-cleaning adhesive tape.

Mesh-to-cluster protocol

A system and / or method for relaying messages in a network (e.g. a mobile network) are provided. Certain portable communications nodes are instrumented with omni-directional antennas. Certain static communications nodes are network cluster-head nodes with directional antennas, and, for example, achieve much of the gain possible when all nodes have directional antennas. Cluster-head communications preferably are used when the nodes are separable by the directional antennas. Preferably, there is a transition to mesh communications when the nodes cannot take advantage of the directional antennas. One feature of certain exemplary embodiments is that only one side of a communication link requires a directional antennal to enable spatial frequency reuse.

Found-item information management server, found-item information management program, and found-item information management method

A found-item information management server is able to hand a lost item over to the owner early with a high probability. When the finder of a found item sends found-item information to the found-item information management server using a first terminal, a found-item reporting unit registers the found-item information, partly as secret particular information, in a found-item information database. Thereafter, the owner of the found item sends a request to refer to the found-item information registered in the found-item information database using a second terminal. An information disclosing unit sends the found-item information registered in the found-item information database, except for the particular information, to the second terminal. When the owner sends lost-item information to the found-item information management server using the second terminal, a match determining unit determines a match between the lost-item information and the particular information stored in the found-item information database, and sends a determined result to the second terminal.

Remote access to tracking system contact information

In the context of tracking systems, it is difficult to ensure that an organization has a complete, accurate database of contacts stored in its tracking system. When tracking systems users are required to manage exporting and importing of contacts from their desktop mail clients and handheld devices, it is almost certain that contact information will not be kept up-to-date and that confidence in the accuracy of the contact information will not be high. By enabling a remote directory access portal in the tracking system, all users can be assured that they have available the latest contact information for the organizations' contacts. In addition to providing directory access, the tracking system can authenticate users and, based on the users' entitlements, authorize users' access to specific contacts.

Robust recognizer of perceptually similar content

An implementation of a technology is described herein for recognizing the perceptual similarity of the content of digital goods. At least one implementation, described herein, introduces a new hashing technique. More particularly, this hashing technique produces hash values for digital goods that are proximally near each other, when the digital goods contain perceptually similar content. In other words, if the content of digital goods are perceptually similar, then their hash values are, likewise, similar. The hash values are proximally near each other. This is unlike conventional hashing techniques where the hash values of goods with perceptually similar content are far apart with high probability in some distance sense (e.g., Hamming). This abstract itself is not intended to limit the scope of this patent. The scope of the present invention is pointed out in the appending claims.

A control apparatus and method for a hybrid vehicle that searches for and determines a scheduled travel route and a downhill section included in the scheduled travel route on the basis of positional information of the vehicle and road information. The control apparatus determines a section from a downhill control start point to an end point of a target downhill section as a controlled target section. The downhill control start point is located a predetermined first distance before a start point of the target downhill section. When the vehicle travels on the controlled target section, the control apparatus executes downhill control. Even in a situation in which a target downhill section is newly determined during execution of the downhill control, the control apparatus continues the downhill control until the vehicle reaches an end point of the controlled target section for which the downhill control is started.

Checking storage reconfiguration

A method for reconfiguring a storage system communicating with a host, consisting of the steps of formulating a proposed reconfiguration of the storage system from an original configuration, and generating a record of operations of the storage system during an evaluation period in the original configuration. In response to the record, the method further consists of making a determination whether data accessed by the host in the original configuration during the evaluation period would have been unavailable to the host if the proposed reconfiguration had been implemented prior to the evaluation period. In response to the determination, a decision is made whether to implement the proposed reconfiguration.

Sensor for detecting microorganisms and corresponding process

Microbial fuel cells generate an electrical signal when microbes enter the cells through a semipermeable membrane. By reading and analyzing the signal from one or more such fuel cells can indicate infection in people or animals, indicate pathogens growing in food or show mold growth. Insofar as different microbes have specific metabolisms, the signal may be used to determine which microbe is present.

Prediction and prevention of uncorrectable memory errors

A method for predicting and preventing uncorrectable errors that may occur while accessing memory in a computer system. The method involves detecting two or more correctable errors from two or more different physical addresses on each of two or more different bit positions from the same DIMM within a specified period of time, with all of the correctable errors occurring within the same checkword. The method also involves detecting two or more correctable errors from two or more different physical addresses on each of three or more different outputs from the same DRAM within a specified period of time, as long as the three outputs do not all correspond to the same relative bit position in their respective checkwords. This allows a computer system which encounters correctable errors to continue to reliably operate without the unnecessary replacement of functioning memory systems.
