Methods and apparatus for cyrogenic treatment of a body cavity or lumen

Methods and apparatus for the treatment of a body cavity or lumen are described where a heated fluid and / or gas may be introduced through a catheter and into treatment area within the body contained between one or more inflatable / expandable members. The catheter may also have optional pressure and temperature sensing elements which may allow for control of the pressure and temperature within the treatment zone and also prevent the pressure from exceeding a pressure of the inflatable / expandable members to thereby contain the treatment area between these inflatable / expandable members. Optionally, a chilled, room temperature, or warmed fluid such as water may then be used to rapidly terminate the treatment session.

Multifunctional optical assembly

An integrated optical assembly including a light management component with an entry surface and a light delivery component having an exit surface attached to the entry surface of the light management component is disclosed The light management component and the light delivery component are attached together in a manner that defines voids between the entry surface of the light management component and the exit surface of the light delivery component. The voids between the light management component and the light delivery component may provide an air interface over substantial portions of the entry surface of the light management component.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for efficiently preparing blood cells, such as mature megakaryocytes and platelets, from iPS cells in an in vitro culture system. The present invention provides a sac-like structure enclosing hematopoietic progenitor cells, which is obtained by inoculating iPS cells onto feeder cells and then culturing the iPS cells under conditions suitable for inducing the differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. Moreover, the present invention also provides a method for producing various types of blood cells, which comprises culturing hematopoietic progenitor cells enclosed in the sac-like structure under conditions suitable for inducing the differentiation of blood cells. Furthermore, the present invention also provides a method for producing various types of blood cells, particularly megakaryocytes and platelets, without involving the sac-like structure.

Swollen starch-latex compositions for use in papermaking

A novel filler treatment comprising the preparation of swollen starch-latex compositions, prepared in the presence or absence of co-additives, and the addition of the said composition to a filler suspension, has been developed. Use of the treated filler during papermaking improves filler retention and produces filled papers where addition of the filler has only a minimal negative effect on strength properties. The swollen starch-latex compositions can be prepared in a batch or jet cooker, or by mixing with hot water under controlled conditions (i.e., temperature, pH, mixing, mixing time) in order to make the starch granules swell sufficiently to improve their properties as a filler additive but avoiding excess swelling leading to their rupture. The swollen starch-latex composition is then rapidly mixed with the filler slurry, preferably in a static mixer, and added to the papermaking furnish at a point prior to the headbox of the paper machine. The starch-latex composition can be used with wood-free or wood-containing furnishes. The treated filler is easily retained in the web during papermaking, improves drainage, and gives sheets having good formation. Sheets made with the treated fillers have higher bonding and tensile strengths than sheets produced using filler treated with either swollen starch alone or latex alone. Retention and drainage are further improved when conventional retention aid chemicals are added to the furnish containing the treated filler. The use of swollen starch-latex compositions could allow the papermaker to increase the filler content of the paper without sacrificing dry strength properties or increasing the amount, and hence the cost, of the retention aid added. The combination of swollen starch and latex could be used as furnish additives in the manufacture of both filled grades and grades that contain no filler such as sack papers and paperboard products.

Methods for facilitating recovery of functions of endogenous or implanted or transplanted stem cells using hyaluronic acid

InactiveUS20060069064A1Lower Level RequirementsImproving overall in vivo microenvironmental nicheOrganic active ingredientsBiocideAdjuvantCell-Extracellular Matrix
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is an essential component of tissue extracellular matrices that contributes to the architecture of stem cell niches, which determine the fate of stem cells. Decreased levels of HA are found in subjects experiencing a variety of pathological conditions, as well as in subjects receiving a variety of therapeutic interventions, for example, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, to treat pathological conditions. The use of HA to reconstitute a tissue extracellular matrix partially or completely depleted of HA is described. More particularly, described herein is the use of exogenous forms of HA as an adjuvant in the restoration of the local tissue specific stem cell microenvironment to enhance stem cell recovery or engraftment and thus tissue recovery and remodeling following stem cell transplantation or other therapies. The effect of HA on hematopoietic stem cells is illustrative of the invention. Mice having severe bone marrow hypoplasia, and pancytopenia resulting from treatment with 5-fluorouracil recovered more rapidly if treated with HA. Similarly, mice transplanted with hematopoietic stem cells following lethal irradiation exhibited enhanced recovery of peripheral blood cell counts when treated with HA as an adjuvant therapy compared to control mice transplanted with hematopoietic stem cells without adjuvant therapy.

Split tube belay device

InactiveUS20070187176A1Reduce brake hand forceIncrease frictionSafety beltsMountaineeringMechanical engineering
The instant invention is a climbing device for belaying and rappelling. A tube is split into two pars that are hinged to pivot scissor-like. A loop of rope is inserted into the split tube and attached to the climber or an anchor with a carabiner. The split tube is open when the rope is slack and retains the one-piece tube belay device's characteristic advantages of smooth feed. The two parts pivot when there is tension in the rope, closing around the rope in a scissor-like movement that increases friction by pinching the rope against the carabiner, significantly reducing the brake-hand force needed to arrest and hold the weight of a climber. At least one spring applies the force that opens the spit tube when the device is not supporting a load. Alternate configurations include openings to control two ropes simultaneously; a lever to control the release of the rope when lowering a climber; and a means for attaching a second carabiner for rigging the device to belay a second with auto-braking. The instant invention is effective with climbing ropes of any diameter and can arrest rope moving through the device in either direction.
