Offline Upgrades

A system and method upgrade software applications offline using a virtual machine. Software applications used by actual customer machines may rely upon customer specific data and protocols. An upgraded version of a software application may become available. The upgrade may be loaded onto a virtual machine. Customer specific data or protocols associated with a previous version of the application may be copied to the virtual machine. The upgraded version may be modified on the virtual machine using the data associated with the previous version. The upgrade process using the virtual machine may detect and eliminate problems with the upgrade associated with the customer machine and / or settings. Once modified, the upgraded version may be transferred from the virtual machine to the customer machine. The upgrade process may be performed primarily on the virtual machine. Therefore, the downtime of the customer machine required to complete the upgrade process may be substantially reduced.

Unified replication mechanism for fault-tolerance of state

A network control system that achieves high availability for forwarding state computation within a controller cluster by replicating different levels of table state between controllers of the controller cluster. To build a highly available controller cluster, the tables for storing the forwarding state are replicated across the controllers. In order to reduce network traffic between the controllers, fewer tables are replicated to slave controllers, which then recompute the forwarding state of the master controller in order to have a replicate copy of the master controller's forwarding state for possible failover. In other embodiments, more tables are replicated to minimize the recomputations and processor load on the slave controller. The network control system of some embodiments performs continuous snapshotting to minimize downtime associated with reaching a fixed point and replicating the state.

Modification of Computing Resource Behavior Based on Aggregated Monitoring Information

A computer system deploys monitoring agents that monitor the status and health of the computing resources. An analysis engine aggregates and analyzes event information from monitoring agents in order to support self-configuration, self-healing, self-optimization, and self-protection for managing the computer resources. If the analysis engine determines that a computing resource for a software application is approaching a critical status, the analysis engine may issue a command to that computing resource in accordance with a selected policy based on a detected event pattern. The command may indicate how the computing resource should change its behavior in order to minimize downtime for the software application as supported by that computing resource. The computer system may also support a distributed approach with a plurality of servers interacting with a central engine to manage the computer resources located at the servers.
