Query optimization by sub-plan memoization

Database system query optimizers use several techniques such as histograms and sampling to estimate the result sizes of operators and sub-plans (operator trees) and the number of distinct values in their outputs. Instead of estimates, the invention uses the exact actual values of the result sizes and the number of distinct values in the outputs of sub-plans encountered by the optimizer. This is achieved by optimizing the query in phases. In each phase, newly encountered sub-plans are recorded for which result size and / or distinct value estimates are required. These sub-plans are executed at the end of the phase to determine their actual result sizes and the actual number of distinct values in their outputs. In subsequent phases, the optimizer uses these actual values when it encounters the same sub-plan again.

Connector terminal having electrical wire and connector receiving the same

The present invention is to provide a connector terminal, which is crimp connected with an aluminum or aluminum alloy conductor having a large diameter, to be inserted into a terminal receiving chamber of a conventional connector housing designed for a copper conductor with less change of electrical characteristic and less modification. The connector terminal having the conductor of the present invention is widely adapted to a vehicle. The connector terminal crimping the electrical wire has a link portion longer than a link portion of a standard connector terminal so that an electrical wire crimp portion projects outwardly from a rearward face when the connector terminal is received in the connector housing. An insulation crimp portion is positioned spaced apart from the rearward face of the connector housing to prevent physical interference with the connector housing.

Temperature-protected semiconductor switch

A temperature-protected semiconductor switch having a semiconductor switch element composed of a number of cells connected in parallel and an integrated reverse diode, and further having a temperature sensor wherein the semiconductor switch element and the temperature sensor are integrated together in a semiconductor body of a first conductivity type. Upon occurrence of an excess temperature, the temperature sensor generates a first signal. A charge carrier detector is also provided which generates a second signal given the occurrence of free charged carriers caused by the integrated reverse diode in the semiconductor body. The first and second signals are supplied to an evaluation means that, for examples, undertakes the shut-off of the semiconductor switch only in the case of a true excess temperature.

Moving platform on rail vehicle

A rail vehicle having a single frame assembly and a movable platform coupled thereto is provided. The rail vehicle indexes, i.e. advances intermittently, along railroad rails. The movable platform advances in a single direction at a generally steady speed as the rail vehicle indexes along a railroad. The platform is the floor of, or a base for, a cabin preferably having a seat, roof support, and controls for the operator. The platform rides longitudinally with the machine on rollers or slides, thus separating the operator and controls from the rest of the machine. Thus, while the rail vehicle moves in an abrupt stop-and-go manner, the platform and the operator move generally consistently in a single direction.

Reversible bonding of microfluidic channels using dry adhesives

A reversible bonded microfluidic structure comprises an overhanging cap or gasket structure atop a continuous microfluidic channel wall. An overhanging gasket structure may reduce stress concentrations at the edge of the channel wall and can permit improved reversible adhesion of the channel wall and adjacent dry adhesive fibers. In one example, reversible adhesion of the overhanging channel wall gasket and adjacent dry adhesive fibers may approach 1 MPa in axial loading. An overhanging gasket structure of the microfluidic channel wall may comprise a single ā€œfiberā€ that is continuous around the perimeter of the desired microfluidic channel shape, and may define a self-sealing gasket which will contain fluid. The overhanging gasket structure may be surrounded by further overhanging or undercut dry adhesive fibers to enhance the adhesion and help make the rest of the surface more tolerant to defects and surface roughness.

Charging device for a shaft furnace

A charging device for a shaft furnace, which includes at least one charging hopper having a discharge orifice arranged in a position off-centre with respect to the central axis of the shaft furnace, and a material distribution device arranged below this hopper. The material distribution device includes a feed channel coaxial with the central axis of the furnace and a rotatable, pivotable chute, which is arranged below the feed channel for distributing a charge in the shaft furnace. The charging device also includes a connecting box in the shape of a funnel, arranged between the material distribution device and the charging hopper. The connecting box possesses a lower central outlet communicating with the charging hopper and at least one upper inlet which is arranged off-centre with respect to the central axis of the furnace and communicates with the discharge orifice of the hopper. According to the invention, the charging device includes at least one spreader situated upstream of the distribution device, on the trajectory of the material discharged from the discharge orifice. The spreader enables a flow of material to be dispersed to both sides of the feed channel.
