Method for manufacturing a multimode fiber pump power combiner

A multimode to low-mode optical fiber is constructed by forming a plurality of multimode optical fibers into a fiber bundle. The bundle is then selectively heated and drawn to form a bi-tapered fiber bundle having a central straight portion in which the multimode fibers are fused into a single length of fiber. During the drawing step, measures are taken to provide an aperture extending through the bi-tapered bundle, including the single straight portion of the bundle. An optical fiber having a low-mode or single-mode core is inserted through the aperture into the straight section of the bi-tapered bundle. The bi-tapered bundle and the low-mode core fiber are heated to a temperature at which cladding of the low-mode core fiber fuses to the straight portion of the bi-tapered bundle. The bi-tapered bundle is then cleaved in the straight portion to provide the multimode to low-mode optical fiber combiner. In one example, the multimode fiber bundle is formed around a metal wire before the drawing operation. After the drawing operation the wire is extracted from the bi-tapered bundle leaving the aperture in the bi-tapered bundle.

Clad composite stent

A body compatible stent is formed of multiple filaments arranged in at least two sets of oppositely directed helical windings interwoven with one another in a braided configuration. Each of the filaments is a composite including a central core and a case surrounding the core. In the more preferred version, the core is formed of a radiopaque and relatively ductile material, e.g. tantalum or platinum. The outer case is formed of a relatively resilient material, e.g. a cobalt / chromium based alloy. Favorable mechanical characteristics of the stent are determined by the case, while the core enables in vivo imaging of the stent. The composite filaments are formed by a drawn filled tubing process in which the core is inserted into a tubular case of a diameter substantially more than the intended final filament diameter. The composite filament is cold-worked in several steps to reduce its diameter, and annealed between successive cold working steps. After the final cold working step, the composite filament is formed into the desired shape and age hardened. Alternative composite filaments employ an intermediate barrier layer between the case and core, a biocompatible cover layer surrounding the case, and a radiopaque case surrounding a structural core.

The spiral circulation ring spirals up the burner kettle to move the HTO around the entire circumference of the burner kettle to eliminate hotspots. An HTO pump moves cooler oil from the top of the kettle directly across the hottest part of the bottom of the kettle, i.e., across the heat transfer plate. Keeping this zone cool will eliminate heat stress of the material. Heat restriction rings direct the heat back and forth throughout the burner kettle for increased efficiency.

Voltage sense method and circuit which alleviate reverse current flow of current bi-directional converters

The Voltage Sense Method is introduced and a number of its implementations using Voltage Sense Circuit are demonstrated to solve problems associated with the start-up of parallel switching converters, each converter having output synchronous rectifiers or more general Current Bi-directional Switches: prevention of the excessive reverse current, elimination of the excess voltage stress of the input switches and elimination of the voltage overshoot in the common output voltage. The Voltage Sense circuit added to each converter generates a Simulated Output Voltage, which predicts how would the output voltage of each particular unit rise during the start-up with enabled synchronous rectifiers if that particular unit were to operate alone. When the simulated output voltage of one converter reaches the actual common output voltage, synchronous rectifiers / CBS switches of that particular converter are all enabled so that their body-diodes, used up until that time to prevent reverse current flow, are by-passed eliminating all start-up problems. The introduced Voltage Sense Method and a number of its Voltage Sense Circuitries are also applicable to solve problems associated with the start-up of the current bi-directional converters with a battery load.

A conversion coating is formed on the surface of a workpiece and is removed via relative motion with a tool, thereby exposing the workpiece to further reaction with the active chemistry.
