Providing a presentation on a network having a plurality of synchronized media types

A presentation system is disclosed for synchronizing a performance of a plurality of presentation content portions at a network node, wherein, when two such content portions are to be presented concurrently at the network node, at least one is delayed until the other such portion can be presented concurrently therewith. In one embodiment, the content portions are transmitted via at least a portion of the Internet to a plurality of network nodes, wherein the presentation system can distribute the presentation content data to the network nodes via a plurality of network routes and presentation formats. Additionally, the present invention can provide various portions of the content data from a plurality of network server nodes, and during a performance of the presentation, the presentation receiving network nodes can determine a particular variation of the presentation to retrieve from the network server nodes. In particular, the retrieval of presentation data depends upon the transmission characteristics of the network such as data transmission rate. Thus, if a low transmission data rate is detected at a first network node, presentation elements of a reduced size can be retrieved.

Power control in a radio data communication system adapted using transmission load

The present invention employs a power control methodology that adapts to the transmission load associated with communications between a base station and a mobile terminal. In one example embodiment, the base station gradually adjusts the power data transmitted to the mobile terminal based on that associated transmission load. As a result, radio channel quality measurements influenced by that base station data transmission to the mobile terminal are not significantly affected by the transmit power adjustment. In other words, the rate at which the transmit power is changed is slower than the rate at which mobile stations measure channel quality. For example, mobile terminals may detect a signal-to-interference ratio every time slot and use that quality measurement for purposes of selecting a maximum transmission rate for the next time slot. The transmit power might be changed by an incremental amount once every ten time slots. By only gradually changing the base station transmit power, the accuracy of the mobile terminal channel quality estimates is not significantly affected. Moreover, if there is a relatively low transmission load, the base station does not waste resources or generate unnecessary interference by transmitting at maximum power.

LDPC concatenation rules for IEEE 802.11n system with packets length specified in OFDM symbols

A method of concatenation for LDPC encoding in an OFDM wireless system selects codewords based on the data packet payload size, wherein the payload size is the number of transmitted information bits in octets. For low transmission rates, shortening and puncturing across all codewords within the packet is applied to minimize OFDM symbol padding. For high transmission rates, only shortening across all codewords within the packet is applied to minimize OFDM symbol padding.

Wireless device authentication at mutual reduced transmit power

A system and method for facilitating the authentication of wireless devices in an environment with multiple wireless networks. A user wishing to join an operating wireless network can bring his wireless device within close physical proximity, for example, less than one meter, of a device in the network that he wishes to join. The user then presses an authenticate button, which causes both devices to enter a low transmission power mode. In such case, the devices are only capable of operation within the close proximity. Being in low power mode will diminish the possibility of eavesdropping on the authentication process. Power down mode also reduces the amount of message traffic in the area and saves scarce power and processing resources at the nodes, which are now out of range. Authentication then takes place in low power mode and once completed, both devices resume normal power levels and continue communicating normally.

Linear actuator

A rotary shaft (3) and a rotation driven member (4) are so connected as to be capable of transmitting motive power when the rotary shaft (3) rotates relatively to the rotation driven member (4). A roller (6) gets displaced to a first position where a frictional force with an outer race (5) and the rotation driven member (4) decreases, thereby permitting transmission of a rotational force from the rotary shaft (3) to the rotation driven member (4). When the rotation driven member (4) rotates relatively to the rotary shaft (3), the roller (6) gets displaced to a second position where the frictional force with the outer race (5) and the rotation driven member (4) increases, thereby rotationally fixing the rotation driven member (4) with respect to the outer race (5). The power transmission from a brake apparatus (e.g., a parking brake apparatus) to an electric motor (2) can be hindered while permitting the power transmission to the brake apparatus from the electric motor (2) by using neither a worm exhibiting a relatively low transmission efficiency nor a worm wheel. In a state where the brake apparatus exhibits its braking force, the roller (6) receives the force from the brake apparatus and is thereby biased toward the second position, whereby a construction of a power transmission mechanism (50) can be simplified and costs can be reduced to such an extent.

Photonic bandgap fibers

Included among the many structures described herein are photonic bandgap fibers designed to provide a desired dispersion spectrum. Additionally, designs for achieving wide transmission bands and lower transmission loss are also discussed. For example, in some fiber designs, smaller dimensions of high index material in the cladding and large core size provide small flat dispersion over a wide spectral range. In other examples, the thickness of the high index ring-shaped region closest to the core has sufficiently large dimensions to provide negative dispersion or zero dispersion at a desired wavelength. Additionally, low index cladding features distributed along concentric rings or circles may be used for achieving wide bandgaps.

Adaptive signal processing method in a MIMO-system

The invention relates to a signal processing method which optimizes the bit error rate under pragmatic conditions. The signalling method is optimally matched to the radio channel, variable with time, in rapid sequence by means of linear operations. Uplink and downlink transmission sides are determined by an excess of antennae on the downlink transmission side. The estimations of the channel matrix in the one transmission direction, necessary for the matching of the transmitter, can, in the absence of common-channel distortions with the condition of channel reciprocity, be directly obtained from the estimations for the other transmission direction. By a suitable linear combination of the transmission signals and, optionally, also the received signals, an error-free bi-directional transmission of data streams can be achieved in Rayleigh and Rice channels with significantly lower transmission powers than in purely receiver-side linear signal processing.

Optical waveguide and method for fabricating the same

An optical waveguide comprising cladding 1 and core segment 20 buried in cladding 1 and serving as a waveguide, wherein a combination of glass material constituting the core segment 20 and another glass material constituting the cladding 1 is so selected that an absolute value of difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between these materials (α1-α2) is within a range of 0 and 9×10−7° C., where α1 denotes a coefficient of thermal expansion of the former material and α2 denotes that of the latter material. Since this makes possible to bond directly the glass materials having different refraction factors and different coefficients of thermal expansion, and to produce the optical waveguide at even a lower temperature as compared to the prior art method as an upper cladding layer is formed with the sputtering method, it realizes reduction in number of processes and time of manufacture, thereby providing the optical waveguide of low transmission loss at low cost, as well as a method of manufacturing the same.

Position encoder using statistically biased pseudorandom sequence

A position sensor encodes absolute position via n consecutive members of a pseudorandom sequence of bits, where each bit (30a-30k) comprises a region of high transmission or reflectivity adjacent to a region of low transmission or reflectivity. The pseudorandom sequence is chosen such that every series of n consecutive bits (30a-30k) in the sequence is predominantly formed from a predetermined bit value (1 or 0). The light transmitted or reflected from the series is therefore detected as a substantially periodic intensity pattern (42), which can be processed via Fourier analysis to yield an accurate interpolation of relative position. An example is given of a pseudorandom sequence, which can be represented as a cyclic Manchester code, in which at least 8 members of every series of 11 consecutive bits has a bit value of 1.

Transmission method, transmitter and receiver

A transmission method and apparatus which perform communication without interfering with other types of communication is provided. A transmission symbol stream is generated by applying predetermined modulation processing to an encoded bit series obtained by encoding an information bit series of a predetermined transmission rate. A transmission signal generated by applying the transmission processing to the transmission symbol series is then transmitted. A transmission-information bit series with a transmission rate lower than the predetermined transmission rate is generated first. Transmission of the transmission signal generated in accordance with the transmission-information bit series then begins through a predetermine communication channel. The low transmission rate is then sequentially stepwise increased to the predetermined transmission rate. Transmission is performed while sequentially stepwise increasing the number of communication channels in accordance with the sequential stepwise increase of the low transmission rate.
