Method and apparatus for forming melt spun nonwoven webs

A method and apparatus for forming nonwoven melt spun webs by spinning a curtain of filaments into a pressurized chamber where they are contacted with pressurized quenching fluid, then using the fluid to draw the filaments through a slot at the bottom of the chamber. The slot is a narrow two dimensional impingement point running the length of the filament curtain where the pressurized quench fluid passes through, escaping to atmosphere. The fluid pressure (potential) energy in the chamber is exchanged for velocity (kinetic) energy at the slot impingement point. The fast moving stream of fluid inside and exiting the slot acts to pull, or draw the filaments through the slot. The fluid and fiber stream is deposited onto a porous collection conveyor belt, forming a fleece web. The invention is more efficient, less complicated, easier to maintain and easier to control than prior systems for melt spinning nonwoven webs.

System and method for processing packets

The present invention provides a system and method for processing packetized data or packets through a communications switch using a Fast Flow-Forwarding (“FFF”) system. FFF provides expedited forwarding of packets based on pattern matching and data manipulation rules that cross protocol layer boundaries. More specifically, the present invention provides a method for processing a packet in which the packet is received and processed using one or more transformation rules whenever the packet satisfies one or more identification rules. Otherwise, the packet is processed using a standard process whenever the packet does not satisfy the one or more identification rules. This method can be implemented using a computer program having a code segment to execute each step of the method.

Rapid flow fractionation of particles combining liquid and particulate dielectrophoresis

Rapid, size-based, deposition of particles from liquid suspension is accomplished using a nonuniform electric field created by coplanar microelectrode strips patterned on an insulating substrate. The scheme uses the dielectrophoretic force both to distribute aqueous liquid containing particles and, simultaneously, to separate the particles. Size-based separation is found within nanoliter droplets formed along the structure after voltage removal. Bioparticles or macromolecules of similar size can also be separated based on subtle differences in dielectric property, by controlling the frequency of the AC current supplied to the electrodes.

Controlled-volume infusion device

An infusion device capable of administering liquid medication at a continuous flow rate, and upon user demand delivers a controlled volume dosage of liquid medication at a higher dosage flow rate. The dosage reservoir remains empty until the user actuates it by selectively and temporarily removing the pressure source, such as a spring. During actuation, fluid rapidly flows from the medication reservoir to fill the dosage reservoir. After actuation, the pressure source exerts a higher pressure on the dosage reservoir than the medication reservoir pressure, which results in a temporary higher bolus flow rate. Thus, two distinct flow rates are achieved with one flow restrictor element.

PVDF microporous membrane and method

Methods for making microporous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes from vinylidene fluoride polymers and the products produced. The PVDF microporous membranes have a significantly faster flow rate at a given pore size as compared to equally-sized microporous membranes made by conventional procedures. The PVDF microporous membranes also have significantly smaller pore sizes than conventional microporous PVDF membranes. The present membranes have unique macrostructural features responsible, in part, for their unique functional properties. The process includes dissolving the polymer in a liquid that includes a solvent and a co-solvent for the polymer. The dissolution of the polymer can be at temperatures ranging from about 20 DEG C. to about 50 DEG C. while the formation of the microporous membrane can be at temperatures ranging from about -10 DEG C. to 50 DEG C. Selection of appropriate operating parameters of temperature and solvent / co-solvent concentration can optimize the membrane at a given nominal pore size, flow rate, and polymer distribution.

Fast flow control methods for communication networks

Reverse link flow control in a high data rate network determines current reverse link data channel rates for access terminals served by a network sector to identify corresponding defined channel gains, which are used to rapidly and reliably estimate total sector interference on the reverse link. Total sector interference indicates reverse link capacity utilization, and when remaining capacity approaches a defined threshold, the sector sets an activity indicator to a busy state indicating reverse link congestion. This action causes at least some access terminals to reduce their reverse link data channel rate. Interference calculation techniques preferably involve baseband digital processing using defined channel gains, permitting rapid evaluation of reverse link capacity and quick, reliable activity indicator updating, which increases reverse link capacity utilization. These techniques may be applied to inter-sector control, wherein the reverse activity indicator status for one sector depends on interference in one or more other sectors.
