1159 results about "Short length" patented technology

Short of a length (sometimes referred to as "back of a length" or "short of a good length") is a term used in the sport of cricket. It describes a delivery from the bowler that pitches short of the optimum length.

Solar Cell Module and Manufacturing Process Thereof

In a solar cell module, a solder fillet 19 is formed on an end surface on the shorter length side of a connection tab to be connected to a bus bar electrode 2a, 3a up to the height of the connection tab. The geometry of the solder fillet 19 is adjusted so that an indentation amount is 0-54% of the height or a bulge amount is 0-10% of the height, by which the maximum principal stress generated during the manufacturing process of a solar cell element 4 can be reduced, and therefore occurrences of cracks can be reduced. Also during a laminating process, breaking of the solar cell element or crack generation can be eliminated.

Apparatus and method for dispensing sheet material

A sheet material dispenser includes a controller for automatically controlling the lengths of sheet materials dispensed from a continuous roll by identifying the type of sheet materials on the roll and dispensing suitable lengths of the identified sheet material. The dispenser desirably has a support for rotatably supporting a roll of sheet material carrying identification relating to the type of sheet material on the roll, and an identifier positioned in or adjacent the dispenser for identifying the type of sheet material on the roll. A processor receives data from the identifier, processes the data and generates an output command, and a controller controls the lengths of sheet material dispensed from the roll in response to the output command. In this way, more absorbent products may be dispensed in shorter lengths and less absorbent products may be dispensed in longer lengths.

Mode-locked multi-mode fiber laser pulse source

A laser utilizes a cavity design which allows the stable generation of high peak power pulses from mode-locked multi-mode fiber lasers, greatly extending the peak power limits of conventional mode-locked single-mode fiber lasers. Mode-locking may be induced by insertion of a saturable absorber into the cavity and by inserting one or more mode-filters to ensure the oscillation of the fundamental mode in the multi-mode fiber. The probability of damage of the absorber may be minimized by the insertion of an additional semiconductor optical power limiter into the cavity. To amplify and compress optical pulses in a multi-mode (MM) optical fiber, a single-mode is launched into the MM fiber by matching the modal profile of the fundamental mode of the MM fiber with a diffraction-limited optical mode at the launch end, The fundamental mode is preserved in the MM fiber by minimizing mode-coupling by using relatively short lengths of step-index MM fibers with a few hundred modes and by minimizing fiber perturbations. Doping is confined to the center of the fiber core to preferentially amplify the fundamental mode, to reduce amplified spontaneous emission and to allow gain-guiding of the fundamental mode. Gain-guiding allows for the design of systems with length-dependent and power-dependent diameters of the fundamental mode. To allow pumping with high-power laser diodes, a double-clad amplifier structure is employed. For applications in nonlinear pulse-compression, self phase modulation and dispersion in the optical fibers can be exploited. High-power optical pulses may be linearly compressed using bulk optics dispersive delay lines or by chirped fiber Bragg gratings written directly into the SM or MM optical fiber. High-power cw lasers operating in a single near-diffraction-limited mode may be constructed from MM fibers by incorporating effective mode-filters into the laser cavity. Regenerative fiber amplifiers may be constructed from MM fibers by careful control of the recirculating mode. Higher-power Q-switched fiber lasers may be constructed by exploiting the large energy stored in MM fiber amplifiers.

Implantable lead and surgical accessories

Leads for chronic implantation in the brain or other anatomical targets utilize tubular stylet means which are external to the lead. The lead comprises a distal electrode terminal, a proximal connector terminal, and a conductor cable having a reinforced distal portion and a stepped outside diameter providing a shoulder which cooperates with the distal end of the external stylet means. The substantial stiffness of the external stylet allows implantation of the lead without a brain-entering cannula. A tubular stylet spacer is employed to minimize lead dislodgement due to disassembly and removal of the lead introduction tools. Externalized stylet allows the conductor cable to have a small outside diameter and a desirably short length. A method of terminating conductors to electrodes using inserts is suitable for very fine wires and stranded conductors. A reinforced electrode terminal construction enables robust small-dimensioned terminal and high localization accuracy when introduced with external stylet means.

Wine rack and kit and method for its onsite assembly

Disclosed is a wine rack, large versions of which are adapted to be installed against a wall of a room or as a free standing wall separated from the walls of a room, which is a monolithic flat rigid sheet to which has uniformly mounted in rows through holes therein a like number of wine bottle support rods which project perpendicularly and parallel to each other from one or both faces of the sheet so that two wine bottles of varying sidewall diameter can be stored on three of the rods without their side-walls touching and whose essential elements can be fabricated offsite by forming uniform rows of holes in a monolithic sheet of stainless steel; fitting in the holes machine bolts whose threaded shank ends project beyond a face of the steel sheet; bonding the heads of the bolts to the opposite face of the steel sheet so that their threaded ends project axially perpendicularly, rigidly and parallel to each other; and forming a female threaded cavity in one end of a plurality of wine bottle support rods. The thus-fabricated structural parts of the wine rack are then transported to the installation site, where the rods are coupled to the projecting ends of the bolts. A plurality of the thus-fabricated wine rack are mounted side-by-side vertically on a wall of a room at the installation site or one of them can be installed as free standing version which is stabilizing from bending or swaying at its base. A free standing version with wine bottle support rods projecting from both faces thereof can similarly be produced using short lengths of threaded steel rods which, when inserted in the holes in the steel sheet, its ends project a short distance beyond each face of the steel sheet so that the internally female threaded ends wine bottle support rods can be mounted on both ends thereof.

Compact swirl augmented afterburners for gas turbine engines

An afterburner apparatus that utilizes a novel swirl generator for rapidly and efficiently atomizing, vaporizing, as necessary, and mixing a fuel into an oxidant. The swirl generator converts an oxidant flow into a turbulent, three-dimensional flowfield into which the fuel is introduced. The swirl generator effects a toroidal outer recirculation zone and a central recirculation zone, which is positioned within the outer recirculation zone. These recirculation zones are configured in a backward-flowing manner that carries heat and combustion byproducts upstream where they are employed to continuously ignite a combustible fuel / oxidizer mixture in adjacent shear layers. The recirculation zones accelerate flame propagation to allow afterburning to be completed in a relatively short length. Inherent with this swirl afterburner concept are design compactness, light weight, lower cost, smooth and efficient combustion, high thrust output, wide flammability limits, continuous operation at stoichiometric fuel / oxidizer mixture ratios, no combustion instabilities, and relatively low pressure losses.
