A tentative location of a transmitter in an indoor environment is determined by triangulation, using at least two direction finders. The tentative location is made more accurate by performing at least one added action selected from the following: checking the likelihood that the tentative location is an accurate location by comparing measured transmitter signal strengths with calculated signal strengths, using a known indoor environment structure, using a record of the transmitter movement through the indoor environment for determining whether the transmitter is located in an obscured area of the indoor environment or performing an alignment procedure on the antennas to improve the triangulation.

Multidrop Data Transfer

Multi-drop communications channels can have significantly deep notches in their frequency response causing a corresponding limitation of the effective data transmission rate. A special time-ordered coding method is described which results in the emitted spectrum of the data stream transmitted into the channel having a notch at the same frequency as the notch in the channel frequency response, permitting channel receivers to successfully decode the transmitted data stream. The described coding method may be applied at various multiples of the channel notch frequency to support different throughput rates, and may be combined with other coding techniques such as group or vector signaling codes.

In a multi-carrier transmission scheme (frequency domain multiplexed—FDM), a single high rate data stream is split into multiple lower rate data streams each transmitted over a different carrier (e.g., a tone or bin). The data rate possible from a multiple-carrier transmission scheme is theoretically equivalent to the data rate possible from a single-carrier (including baseband) scheme with the same composite bandwidth. The scheme allows for a communications system that can selectively send each data signal (e.g., audio data, video data, raw data, etc.) partitioned out into full and half duplex sections (e.g., tones). The scheme can have a reduced complexity and cost and use less bandwidth. This is done by being able to selectively split a data signal into both full and half duplex tones.

Large Mode Area Optical Fiber

A large-mode-area (LMA) optical fiber (10) that operates as a single-mode optical fiber. The optical fiber includes a core region (20) surrounded by an inner cladding (32), which in turn is surrounded by an outer cladding (40). The inner cladding includes at least one up-doped ring region (32R1). The ring region is configured to form a large attenuation differential between the higher-order modes and the fundamental mode so only that the fundamental mode remains traveling in the optical fiber. If necessary, the optical fiber can include a bend (10B) having a select “resonant” bend diameter (DB) that increases the relative attenuation of the fundamental and higher-order modes. The optical fiber supports an effective mode field diameter (MFD) of up to 40 μm to 50 μm. As a result, detrimental non-linear effects are suppressed, which allows the optical fiber to carry substantially more optical power than conventional LMA optical fibers. The LMA optical fiber is thus eminently suited for a number of optical-fiber-based applications calling for high optical power, such as fiber lasers and pump sources for wavelength conversion.

Aspects provide methods for controlling user equipment operation in a wireless communications network configured to support communication with the user equipment according to a communication mode which utilises repetition of messaging; computer program products and network nodes operable to perform those methods. One method comprises: determining a modulation and coding regime to be used by the user equipment; identifying a repetition regime to be implemented by the user equipment in conjunction with the modulation and coding regime; and communicating an indication of the determined modulation and coding regime and identified repetition regime to the user equipment. Aspects recognise that when implementing a coverage enhanced region within a network it is possible that fixed repetition levels can be defined for CE-MTC UE. Those fixed repetition levels can be implemented by a network and recognise differences between the CE-MTC UE radio condition. That is to say, the number of repetitions used may correspond to radio condition being experienced at a machine-type communication device: those in poorer coverage regions will be selected to receive a greater number of repetitions than those in a better radio coverage region. The granularity of such repetition levels may subject to a given operator's implementation of a coverage enhanced region. The first aspect recognises that it is possible to implement varying repetition levels for user equipment operating in the coverage enhanced region supported by a network access node. Those varying repetition levels can be configured at the network access node; for example, an eNodeB.
