Semi-solid forming of metal-matrix nanocomposites

ActiveUS7509993B1Reduce problemPromote solidification and build-upMaterial nanotechnologyMetal foundingNanometreLiquidus
A metal matrix nanocomposite is formed by heating a metal above its liquidus temperature, adding nanoparticles, and then agitating the mixture with high-frequency (and preferably ultrasonic) vibration. The mixture can then be cooled below the liquidus of the metal to a semisolid state, and placed in a mold to form it into some desired shape. The formed mixture can then be quenched or otherwise allowed to cool to provide an article in finished (or nearly so) form.

Method and system for power factor correction using constant pulse proportional current

A Power Factor Correction (PFC) system providing near unity power factor for an AC power source (VAC) connected to a complex load. The system includes a bridge rectifier, boost or buck-boost converter, complex load, and pulse width modulation (PWM) controller to provide pulses with variable duty cycle to a power switch. The invention is a constant pulse proportional current (CPPC) PWM controller that generates trains of pulses constant in frequency and duty cycle for one semi-cycle of the VAC. The duty cycle of the driving signal is modified by applying open-loop correction signals to summing nodes of PWM circuits. Since the PWM provides a constant train of driving pulses with constant duty cycle for one semi-cycle of the VAC, the current absorbed by the converter is contingent and linearly proportional to the voltage. Thus, the output current follows the voltage resulting in a power factor of near unity.

Router for virtual private network employing tag switching

A service provider's routers (PE1, P1, P2, PE2) provide connections between and share routing information with routers (CE1, CE2) of a customer virtual private network (VPN) as well as routers of other customers' VPNs, which may have overlapping address spaces. A service provider's edge router (PE1) informed by the customer's router (CE1) that it will forward packets to a given prefix notifies the other edge router (PE2) that PE1 can forward packets to that address prefix if the destination is in the VPN to which CE1 belongs. PE1 also tells PE2 to tag any thus-destined packets with a particular tag T3. PE2 stores this information in a forwarding information base that it separately keeps for that VPN so that when PE2 receives from a router CE2 in the same VPN a packet whose destination address has that prefix, it tags the packet as requested. But PE2 also tags it with a tag T2 that the router P2 to which PE2 first sends it has asked PE2 to apply to packets to be sent to PE1. P2 routes the packet in accordance with T2, sending it to P1 after replacing T2 with a tag T1 that P1 has similarly asked P2 to use. P1 removes T1 from the packet and forwards it in accordance with T1 to PE1, which in turn removes T3 from the packet and forwards it in accordance with T3 to CE1. In this manner, only the edge routers need to maintain separate routing information for separate VPNs.

Image Display Apparatus, Image Display Monitor and Television Receiver

A control LSI (30) time-divides one frame period of an input image signal into a plurality of sub-frame periods and outputs the signal to a display panel, so as to carry out image display by pseudo impulse driving. At this time, in a first display mode, a first tone converting circuit (34) refers to a first table (37), and a second tone converting circuit (35) refers to a third table (39), to generate an image signal of each sub-frame from the input image signal. In a second display mode, the first tone converting circuit (34) refers to a second table (38), and the second tone converting circuit (35) refers to a fourth table (40), to generate the image signal of the sub-frame from the input image signal. Each of a first selector (41) and a second selector (42) switches the tables to be referred in accordance with a mode switching signal. Thus, it is possible to realize an image display apparatus which can effectively obtain an effect of suppressing an unfocused moving image by the pseudo impulse driving and reduce the problem of the flicker caused by the pseudo impulse driving.

Control technique for a communication system

A control technique for a communication system in which a microcell base station is co-located with a macrocell base station. The microcell base station tracks hot spots as they move within the macrocell. The microcell base station may utilize a two-dimensional (2-D) antenna array, which is co-located with the macro cell antenna. The two-dimensional antenna is steerable in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The size of the microcell coverage area depends upon the distance from the cell site antenna as well as the dimensionality of the array, which determines the angular spread of the beam. Filter tap weights may be adjusted to point the beam to any desired location in the macrocell. The orthogonality between the macrocell and the microcell may be obtained either in the frequency domain or in the code domain, depending upon the system in which it is implemented.

Local constraints for motion matching

A method and apparatus for estimating the motion of an image region (the “center” region) from a source video frame to a target video frame.
