The controller (22) includes a compact single board computer (24) with an embedded operating system, such as a microkernel version of the Linux operating system, requiring approximately eight megabytes of memory. A person desiring to use the telephone (12) presents the biological characteristic, such as a fingerprint, to the biometric input device (20). A biometric template is created and compared to a resident template database of authorization information. Using a "one-to-many" search engine, requiring approximately 1 megabyte of memory, the present invention is able to perform a linear search of 500 templates within 1.5 seconds or less.
