Method for reducing NOx during combustion of coal in a burner

An organically complexed nanocatalyst composition is applied to or mixed with coal prior to or upon introducing the coal into a coal burner in order to catalyze the removal of coal nitrogen from the coal and its conversion into nitrogen gas prior to combustion of the coal. This leads to reduced NOx production during coal combustion. The nanocatalyst compositions include a nanoparticle catalyst that is made using a dispersing agent. The dispersing agent includes at least one functional group such as a hydroxyl, a carboxyl, a carbonyl, an amine, an amide, a nitrile, a nitrogen having a free lone pair of electrons, an amino acid, a thiol, a sulfonic acid, a sulfonyl halide, and an. acyl halide. The dispersing agent forms stable, dispersed, nano-sized catalyst particles. The catalyst composition can be formed as a stable suspension to facilitate storage, transportation and application of the catalyst nanoparticles to a coal material. The catalyst composition can be applied before or after pulverizing the coal material or it may be injected directly into the coal burner together with pulverized coal.

Active material devices with containment layer

An active material electronic device is described with a containment layer. The device includes an active chalcogenide, pnictide, or phase-change material in electrical communication with an upper and lower electrode. The device includes a containment layer formed over the active material that prevents escape of volatilized matter from the active material when the device is exposed to high temperatures during fabrication or operation. The containment layer further prevents chemical contamination of the active material by protecting it from reactive species in the processing or ambient environment. The containment layer and intermediate layers formed between the active material and containment layer are formed at temperatures sufficiently low to prevent volatilization of the active material. Once the containment layer is formed, the device may be subjected to high temperature or chemically aggressive environments without impairing the compositional or structural integrity of the active material. Inclusion of the containment layer is shown to extend the cycle life of the device by over two orders of magnitude.

Methods of treating autoimmune diseases with dll4 antagonists

The present invention provides methods of treating a disease or disorder, in which increasing the number of regulatory T cell (Treg) is beneficial, by administering to a subject suffering from such a disease or disorder a therapeutically effective amount of DII4 antagonists that block DII4-Notch signal pathways, thereby increasing the number of Treg. Diseases or disorders treatable by the methods of the invention include autoimmune diseases or disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes, and the like. Suitable DII4 antagonists for the invention include antibodies or antibody fragments that specifically bind DII4 and block DII4-Notch interactions, the extracellular domain of DII4, and the like. The invention also provides methods of preventing an occurrence or recurrence of such diseases or disorders in a subject predisposed or susceptible to developing such diseases or disorders. Furthermore, the methods of the invention are useful in preventing or treating organ transplant rejections or graft-versus-host disease.
