Hybrid clamshell blade system

A hybrid clamshell system encapsulates two of the six sides of an electronic circuit board to provide a high heat density solution and environmental protection. The clamshell enclosures seal to both sides of the PCB and contain fluid shut-off couplings. A two-phase cooling system directs a coolant via a supply path located in the sidewall of the enclosure to one or more cooling modules and collects the coolant via a return path within the enclosure. With the addition of an inject / eject mechanism attached to the clamshell, the fully assembled blade can be “fluid hot-swapped” in and out of the chassis with negligible loss of coolant. The interrelation of the clamshell module and it's implementation in an exemplary system are detailed herein.

Vertical Takeoff and Landing ("VTOL") Aircraft

The invention is to an optionally piloted aircraft that can takeoff and land conventionally or vertically, and can convert between the two. The aircraft is immune to one or more engine failures during vertical flight through multiple engines and the use of a virtual nozzle. Aerodynamic controls are similarly redundant. Hovering flight is enabled with a novel stabilization system. Long range efficient cruise is achieved by turning off some engines in flight and sealing them into an aerodynamic fairing to achieve low drag. The resulting aircraft is capable of CTOL and VTOL, and is capable of converting between the two modes while in the air or on the ground. The aircraft can also be easily taxied on the ground in the conventional manner. Automatic controls considerably reduce the amount of training a pilot needs to fly and land the aircraft in either VTOL or CTOL mode.

Multi-mode power amplifier with high efficiency under backoff operation

A multi-mode RF amplifier is disclosed having high and low output power modes and two power paths. A first RF amplifier delivers power to both paths. When the multi-mode RF amplifier is biased into the high power, HP, mode, substantial power is delivered via both (first and second) paths. While in the low power, LP, mode, an RF switch is turned off, creating a high input impedance, open circuit for the first path, and effectively isolating the two paths. Therefore, power is delivered by the first RF amplifier to the second path only. The impedance presented to the output of the first RF amplifier is equal to the input impedance of the second path which may be optimally set for maximizing power added efficiency or output power in LP mode. Note that, in a preferred embodiment, even in the HP mode more power is delivered to the second power path than to the first power path.

Pseudo-median cascaded canceller

An adaptive signal processing system utilizes a pseudo-median cascaded canceller to compute a set of complex adaptive weights and generate a filtered output signal. The system includes a plurality of building blocks arranged in a Gram-Schmidt cascaded canceller-type configuration for sequentially decorrelating input signals from each other to thereby yield a single filtered output signal. Each building block includes a local main input channel which receives a local main input signal, a local auxiliary input channel which receives a local auxiliary input signal, and a local output channel which sends a local filtered output signal. Each building block generates a complex adaptive weight which is the sample median value of the real and imaginary parts of the ratio of local main input weight training data to local auxiliary input weight training data, and each building block generates a local output signal utilizing the complex adaptive weight. The effect of non-Gaussian noise contamination on the convergence MOE of the system is negligible. In addition, when desired signal components are included in weight training data they cause little loss of noise cancellation.

Multiple concurrent recursive least squares identification with application to on-line spacecraft mass-property identification

The present invention is a method for identifying unknown parameters in a system having a set of governing equations describing its behavior that cannot be put into regression form with the unknown parameters linearly represented. In this method, the vector of unknown parameters is segmented into a plurality of groups where each individual group of unknown parameters may be isolated linearly by manipulation of said equations. Multiple concurrent and independent recursive least squares identification of each said group run, treating other unknown parameters appearing in their regression equation as if they were known perfectly, with said values provided by recursive least squares estimation from the other groups, thereby enabling the use of fast, compact, efficient linear algorithms to solve problems that would otherwise require nonlinear solution approaches. This invention is presented with application to identification of mass and thruster properties for a thruster-controlled spacecraft.

Hybrid Technique for the Conversion/Removal of Contaminants in Alcohol-Water or Like Medium

Apparatus and process for removing and / or converting contaminants in water-miscible organic solvent mixtures by surface interaction effects to forms less objectionable with lesser metabolic impacts for humans. The process both changes distillation entrapped contaminant compounds in-situ and effects removal of the compounds and their reaction products. In what follows, water-miscible-organic-solvent and water mixtures can be substituted for alcohols. The alcohol to be treated is placed in a ventilated vessel leaving room for head space. Contaminant free air or a specific organic-contaminant-free gas is injected into or otherwise placed in contact with the alcohol. A vacuum is pulled within the vessel, which draws the gas through the alcohol into the head space creating gas bubbles. Energy within a specified range of frequencies is imparted to the fluid causing cavitation and reaction. Wetting, solvent polarity characteristics and pressure are fixed or varied dynamically during processing, and inert or reactive gases are added. Reacted and unreacted contaminants enter the bubble cavities and are swept from solution.

Blade-thru-slot combustion engine, compressor, pump and motor

This is simple and efficient rotary machine that can be implemented as compressor, pump, motor and mainly as internal combustion engine. The engine comprises a housing, a rotor(s) with a radial blade(s), a chamber(s) swept by the blade(s), an intersecting planar valve(s) with slot, and a combustion chamber. Blades and slots have matching shapes that allow the traversal of the blades through the slots with negligible loss of air / gases. After traversing the slot, the blade aspires air into one side of the chamber while compresses air on the other side. Fuel is injected in the compressed stream in its way to the combustion chamber, where it is ignited. In a double-rotor implementation, combustion gases are then introduced in the second rotor chamber, just after its blade has traversed the corresponding slot. One side of this blade is pushed by the expansion while the other expels gases from the previous stroke.
