The present invention provides a fluorescent marker ink coloring composition incorporating an optical brightener, a film-forming agent, an aqueous carrier, and a colorant. The optical brightener is an amphoteric distyryl fluorescent whitener which generates a special effect in the dried marking ink composition. Coagulates are formed within the coagulable ink image, and excess liquid is removed from the coagulates to form an ink-jet-ink-derived material image. The ink-jet-ink-derived image is transferred from the operational surface of the intermediate member to another member, which another member may be a receiver member, a drum or a web.

An ink jet device selectively ejects droplets of non-marking liquid ink into cells of a printing member in a desired latent negative image pattern. Certain cells of the printing member are filled with pigmented ink to create a desired image. An electrical bias is applied for fractionating pigment in the pigmented ink from liquid and transferring an image-wise pigmented ink pattern from the printing member to a receiving member, leaving behind a substantial portion of liquid. This invention relates to the field of authentication of coating compositions such as varnishes, inks and paints, and it is particularly useful in the field of authentication of such coating compositions when applied to substrates like banknotes or other valuable documents. It is particularly directed to a marked coating composition. e.g. an ink, that is marked with a marker (taggant) such as to allow for its authentication, and a method for authenticating such a marked coating composition. The marking is achieved by covalently binding a taggant to a coating composition component. e.g. such used for security documents. The taggant, which is not extractable through usual chemical treatments like washing methods or the use of solvents, can be detected and identified upon thermally induced chemical fragmentation with a PY-GC-MS apparatus. The marked ink or the marked substrate is thus authenticated as belonging to a particularly marked ink, varnish or batch.
