The thermal mass and conductivity of the element regulate the rate flow of heat into the element. All heat detectors have this thermal lag. The inventive radiation sensors are especially useful for mm-wave and microwave sensing applications. The sensor can be used individually or in linear or two-dimensional arrays thereof. The invention also is directed to a method of fabricating such a radiation sensor.

The present invention senses changes in intensity of light by converting the changes to transient changes in temperature of a detector, such as a pyroelectric detector. The present invention performs spectroscopic analysis of fluids by optically filtering the light allowed to impinge on a pyroelectric detector, converting the changes in temperature of the pyroelectric detector to a signal and converting the signal to estimate the property of the downhole fluid. The light source is modulated by mechanically chopping the beam or by electrically pulsing the light source or by steering the beam between different path lengths of sample or between a reference cell (filled with a reference fluid or empty) and a sample-filled cell.

Time-dependent classification and signaling of evacuation route safety

An adaptive evacuation system and method for providing a safety route to evacuees. Active smoke and heat detector information can be obtained from a fire panel. Routes and exits in proximity to the active detectors are assumed to be unsafe and closed for use in evacuation. Evacuation planning is accomplished with the remaining “safe” routes. The progression of fire and smoke and the time-dependent degradation of evacuation route safety associated with progression of fire and smoke can be predicted and initial classification and signaling of route safety can be performed. Gas entering the sample chamber passes through the heat exchanger and both it and the infrared detector are at a lower temperature than that of the passive infrared source at an onset of a fire while the difference in temperatures between the passive infrared source and the detector increases during the onset of the fire. The sample chamber and the heat exchanger can be formed integrally from aluminum and their internal surfaces may be coated with a hydrophobic membrane.
