Method and apparatus for exchanging event information between computer systems that reduce perceived lag times by subtracting actual lag times from event playback time

Mechanisms and techniques provide the system that allows a sending computer system to capture and store event information related to events that transpire on a sending computer system in event batches. The event information can include event functionality related to event object in the timestamp related to the event. Periodically, in response to the occurrence of the batch transfer condition, the sending computer system transmits an event batch monthly computer network for receipt by a receiving computer system. The event batch may be processed through a collaboration adapter on the networks while prior to being send to the receiving computer system. Upon receipt of an event batch at the receiving computer system, the receiving computer system can compute a lag time required to receive the event batch. The receiving computer system can then recreate events based on the event information in the event batches while compensating for network lag time incurred during transmission of the event batch between a sending and receiving computer systems. By compensating for network lag during the recreation or playback of events, the system of the invention avoids the receiving computer system from reproducing events in a choppy or discontinuous manner or from getting left behind during event recreation due to accumulations of network lag time.

Movie rental and notification system

An automated movie rental and notification system includes a computer having a movie database containing hold and reservation lists and movie records. The system receives rental requests, each request including a selected movie title, reservation mode, reservation time, and submitter contact information. If the reservation mode is a hold mode, the request is added to the hold list. If the mode is a reserve mode and the selected title will be available by the selected reservation time, then the request is added to the reserve list. When the movie title is available, submitters of the hold list requests associated with that title are successively contacted using respective submitter information to inform the submitter of availability until a positive response is returned from a submitter. Requests on the reserve list are selected for contact a predetermined amount of time before the selected reservation time.

Approach for prioritizing network alerts

A computing system receives status transmissions from nodes within a portion of an electricity distribution network. The status transmissions include information related to hardware problems experienced by nodes within the portion of that network. The computing system determines a “heat” value for each of the status transmissions, where the heat value for a given transmission represents the operating conditions of, and / or the severity of hardware / software problems experienced by, the node responsible for sending that transmission. The computing system aggregates the heat values across the entire portion of the electricity distribution network and compares the aggregated heat values to a threshold value. When the aggregated value exceeds the threshold value, the computing system identifies a crisis situation arising within the portion of the electricity distribution network. The computing system may then convey information associated with the status transmissions to operators of the electricity distribution network.

Priority control in resource allocation for low request rate, latency-sensitive units

InactiveUS20070101033A1Avoiding bandwidth starvationMinimize amount of timeMemory systemsResource allocationDistributed computing
A mechanism for priority control in resource allocation for low request rate, latency-sensitive units is provided. With this mechanism, when a unit makes a request to a token manager, the unit identifies the priority of its request as well as the resource which it desires to access and the unit's resource access group (RAG). This information is used to set a value of a storage device associated with the resource, priority, and RAG identified in the request. When the token manager generates and grants a token to the RAG, the token is in turn granted to a unit within the RAG based on a priority of the pending requests identified in the storage devices associated with the resource and RAG. Priority pointers are utilized to provide a round-robin fairness scheme between high and low priority requests within the RAG for the resource.

Autonomic e-mail processing system and method

Systems and methods for processing autonomic e-mails, which each have at least one unique identifying number attached to them, are disclosed. Internally within an organization, e-mails are often sent to multiple recipients, such as to all members of a particular distribution list, to request information or ask that a task be performed by one or more, but less than all, of those recipients. The disclosed systems and methods help minimize the overall time burden to those recipients in responding to or trying to track such e-mails, and help the sender and recipients alike more easily view, manage and control such e-mails and their ultimate disposition, including the sender's e-mail and the plurality of responses sent by recipients. Separate viewable areas for each string or chain of related autonomic e-mails within each user's e-mail in-box and other e-mail storage areas are provided. These areas are preferably organized in a certain hierarchical manner and facilitate the user's ability to review and process such e-mails with greater dispatch and confidence. The e-mail's sender and at least certain recipients can help decide whether to terminate a particular thread of autonomic e-mail communications by designating it as completed or canceled. In either such situation, those e-mails which have not yet read by recipients can be moved to a “completed” folder or deleted altogether. This in turn saves the review time of those recipients who have been away or too busy to check the e-mails within their respective in-boxes.
