System for transferring customized hardware and software settings from one computer to another computer to provide personalized operating environments

A method and system for transferring information from a first computer-based device to a web site, for temporary storage and later transfer of the stored information from the web site to a second computer-based device. First, a communication link is established between a first computer-based device and the web site. Next, the first computer-based device is scanned, via the web site, to determine the information contained on the first computer-based device. The user then selects which of the scanned information is to be uploaded from the first computer-based device onto the web site for temporary storage. Finally, the selected information is transferred from the first computer-based device onto the web site for temporary storage. Once retrieval of the temporarily stored information is desired, the user establishes a communication link between a second computer-based device and the web site. The second computer-based device is scanned, via the web site, to determine the information contained on the second computer-based device. The temporarily stored information, from the first computer-based device on the web site, is then displayed to the user and the user selects which of this temporary information, from the first computer-based device, is to be downloaded from the web site onto the second computer-based device. The selected information is finally downloaded from the website onto the second computer-based device.

System and method for clock synchronization over packet-switched networks

Embodiments of the invention enable the synchronization of clocks across packet switched networks, such as the Internet, sufficient to drive a jitter buffer and other quality-of-service related buffering. Packet time stamps referenced to a local clock create a phase offset signal. A shortest-delay offset generator uses a moving-window filter to select the samples of the phase offset signal having the shortest network propagation delay within the window. This shortest network propagation delay filter minimizes the effect of network jitter under the assumption that queuing delays account for most of the network jitter. The addition of this filtered phase offset signal to a free-running local clock creates a time reference that is synchronized to the remote clock at the source thus allowing for the transport of audio, video, and other time-sensitive real-time signals with minimal latency.

Method and system for managing information retention

An improved information retention management mechanism is disclosed wherein an information set may be purged from an information system without having to delete the information set from the system. Whenever an information set enters an information system, a key is associated with the information set. The information set is encrypted using the associated key, and the encrypted form of the information set is stored in the information system. The unencrypted form of the information set is not stored. To render the information set to a user, the encrypted form of the information set is accessed along with the associated key, and then decrypted using the associated key to derive the original information set. Once derived, the information set is rendered to the user. So long as the associated key remains in the system, this process may be carried out to render the information set to a user. At some point, in accordance with an information retention policy, the information set is selected for purging. To purge the information set, all that needs to be done is to delete the associated key. By deleting the associated key, all copies of the encrypted information set stored within the information system are made unrenderable; as a result, the information set is effectively “purged” from the system. This purging is achieved without having to delete the encrypted information set from the system.

Methods, apparatus, and systems are provided for tracking and analyzing data of consumer activity. The tracked data can be organized (e.g. as stored in cache, RAM, hard drives) in certain types of tables, where the tables can be associated with certain tags (keys) for efficiently accessing the data. The organization and associations of the data can also provide simple mechanisms for manipulating the data to obtain results specifically relevant for a task, such as detection of fraud or prediction of consumer behavior to provide better customer service or new services. For example, the tables may contain counters that store the number of times that two correlated consumer events occur within specific time intervals of each other. Such time data can provide efficient determination of patterns of consumer activity.
