Integrated remote replication in hierarchical storage systems

Remote replication is implemented with hierarchical storage. In exemplary embodiments, a first storage site has a first storage system providing an upper tier of storage and a second storage system providing a lower tier of storage. A remote second storage site has third and fourth storage systems configured to receive remote replication from the first and second storage systems, respectively. When a file is migrated from the upper tier to the lower tier, a stub file is stored in place of the migrated file indicating a storage location of the migrated file on the second storage system. When copies of the migrated file and the stub file are replicated to the fourth and third storage systems, respectively, information is transmitted to the second storage site for linking the copy of the stub file at the third storage system to the copy of the migrated file at the fourth storage system.

Systems and methods for error injection in data storage systems

Embodiments of the solid-state storage system provided herein are configured to perform improved mechanisms for testing of error recovery of solid state storage devices. In some embodiments, the system is configured to introduce or inject errors into data storage commands or operations performed in the non-volatile memory. Injected errors include corruption of data stored in the non-volatile memory, deliberate failure to execute storage operations, and errors injected into communication protocols used between various elements of the device. In some embodiments, injected errors can include direct errors that trigger an immediate execution of error recovery mechanisms and delayed errors that trigger execution of error recovery mechanisms at a later time. Error recovery mechanisms can be tested in an efficient, reliable, and deterministic manner to help ensure effective operation of storage devices. The integrity of non-volatile memory can also be tested.

Dynamically controlling temporary compromise on data redundancy

Systems and methods for determining when to allow a temporary compromise on redundancy in a storage system. When servicing write requests, the storage system may utilize data redundancy techniques when writing data to backend storage devices. The operating conditions of the storage system are tracked and early acknowledgements for write requests may be permitted when the storage system is healthy enough. If the number of unacknowledged writes is greater than a programmable threshold, then early acknowledges may be prohibited. Also, if the number of ongoing rebuild processes is greater than a programmable threshold, then early acknowledges may be prohibited.

Systems and methods for detailed error reporting in data storage systems

Embodiments of the invention are directed to providing detailed error reporting of data operations performed on a NVM storage device. In one embodiment, a controller interfaces with a NVM storage device including NVM storage coupled with a bridge. In one embodiment, the controller is provided physical, page-level access to the NVM via the bridge, and the bridge provides detailed error reporting of the data operations that the bridge performs on the NVM on behalf of the controller. For example, the bridge may provide page level reporting indicating which page(s) failed during a read operation. Detailed error reporting allows the controller to better understand the failures that occurred in a data access operation in the NVM. It also enables the controller to manage the flash media at the physical page / block level. In one embodiment, detailed error reporting also enables the return of discontinuous ranges of data with the error portions removed.

Managing unreliable memory in data storage systems

A data storage system configured to manage unreliable memory units is disclosed. In one embodiment, the data storage system maintains an unreliable memory unit list designating memory units in a non-volatile memory array as reliable or unreliable. The unreliable memory unit list facilitates management of unreliable memory at a granularity level finer than the granularity of a block of memory. The data storage system can add entries to the unreliable memory unit list as unreliable memory units are discovered. Further, the data storage system can continue to perform memory access operations directed to reliable memory units in blocks containing other memory units determined to be unreliable. As a result, the operational life of the data storage system is extended.

Method and apparatus for managing virtual ports on storage systems

A storage system is configured to create and manage virtual ports on physical ports. The storage system can transfer associations between virtual ports and physical ports when a failure occurs in a physical port or a link connected to the physical port so that a host can access volumes under the virtual ports through another physical port. The storage system can also change associations between virtual ports and physical ports by taking into account the relative loads on the physical ports. When a virtual machine is migrated from one host computer to another, the loads on the physical ports in the storage system can be used to determine whether load balancing should take place. Additionally, the storage system can transfer virtual ports to a remote storage system that will take over the virtual ports, so that a virtual machine can be migrated to remote location.

Logical to physical address mapping in storage systems comprising solid state memory devices

The present idea provides a high read and write performance from / to a solid state memory device. The main memory of the controller is not blocked by a complete address mapping table covering the entire memory device. Instead such table is stored in the memory device itself, and only selected portions of address mapping information are buffered in the main memory in a read cache and a write cache. A separation of the read cache from the write cache enables an address mapping entry being evictable from the read cache without the need to update the related flash memory page storing such entry in the flash memory device. By this design, the read cache may advantageously be stored on a DRAM even without power down protection, while the write cache may preferably be implemented in nonvolatile or other fail-safe memory. This leads to a reduction of the overall provisioning of nonvolatile or fail-safe memory and to an improved scalability and performance.
