Multi-carrier transmission systems

A multi-carrier transmission system has a plurality of transceivers, each having a receiver and a transmitter. Data is transmitted between the transceivers by modulating the data onto a multiplicity of carrier waves in the form of multi-bit symbols, wherein each carrier wave constitutes a channel, and wherein the number of bits per symbol (the bit loading), varies between channels and, within a channel, with time, so that each channel has associated therewith a bit loading parameter. In operation, the multi-carrier system is adapted to synchronously update, at the transceivers, the bit loading parameters associated with each channel by transmission of data over a control channel, in that the control channel is established, at system start-up, on a predetermined one of the multiplicity of carrier waves whose identity is known to the transceivers, and in that the control channel is, after start-up, changed from the predetermined channel to a further channel, selected by the first transceiver on the basis of channel characteristics.

Method and Apparatus for Generating Partitioning Keys for a Range-Partitioned Database

A method and apparatus for generating partition keys in an information handling system having a partitioned database. Partition keys are generated by concatenating a partition subrange identifier specifying a subrange of key values and a sequence number specifying a particular key value within a subrange. Partition keys are assigned with the aid of a partition key control table that stores subrange and available key block information and is updated whenever key blocks are reserved or the database is repartitioned. An activity indicator maintained for each partition indicates recent activity in the partition. In response to a request for a partition key, a partition is selected for key assignment having the least recent activity as indicated by its activity indicator. Specific activity indicators disclosed include a timestamp for each partition in the control table, as well as a count of the threads in a particular application instance concurrently accessing a partition.

Apparatus and Method for Reducing Interference

An electronic apparatus for reducing interference in a desired signal, the apparatus comprising: (a) a plurality of measurement signal lines, each connected to a respective measurement signal electrode; and (b) one or more reference signal lines, each connected to respective one or more reference electrodes; each of said measurement signal lines or a respective group of said measurement signal lines being associated by being in close physical proximity with a respective one of said reference signal lines for a substantial part of their lengths, so that each measurement signal line or signal line group with its corresponding reference signal line forms a measurement signal line or measurement signal line group / reference signal line pair, said electronic apparatus further comprising subtraction means for subtracting an interference on each reference signal line from an interference signal on the associated measurement signal line or from each measurement signal line in the measurement signal line group in that measurement signal line or measurement signal line group / reference signal line pair, wherein at least one of the measurement signal electrodes is arranged to be in direct electrical connection with a subject and at least one of the reference signal electrodes is arranged to be in close physical proximity but not in direct electrical contact with the subject.

Method and apparatus for time resolved optical imaging of biological tissues as part of animals

There is provided a method and system for collecting optical data for use in time resolved optical imaging wherein light is directionally propagated through free-space optics to impinge on a plurality of illumination at the surface of a biological tissue such as that comprised in small animals. Light re-emitted from the tissue is collected and directionally propagated through free space optics towards a detector to produce time resolved optical signals useful for optical image reconstructions.
