Multi-focal treatment of skin with acoustic energy

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for applying acoustic energy to the skin. Acoustic waveguides with elements of varying thickness or shape are disclosed which deliver energy to more than one depth below a surface of the skin substantially simultaneously. The invention is especially useful with devices that focus ultrasound energy by condensing a propagating wavefront. The invention compensates for the mismatch in acoustic properties of the device's waveguide and the biological tissue that typically cause portions of the collapsing wavefront to lag behind other portions and, thereby, limit the focusing capabilities of acoustic treatment devices.

Abrasive bead coated sheet and island articles

Flexible abrasive sheet articles having precision thickness flat-topped raised island structures that are coated with a monolayer of equal sized abrasive agglomerate are described. Methods of producing high quality equal-sized spherical shaped composite abrasive agglomerate beads containing small diamond abrasive particles are described. Beads are produced by level-filling fine mesh screens or perforated sheets with a water based metal oxide slurry containing abrasive particles and then using a fluid jet to eject the abrasive slurry lumps from the individual screen cells into a dehydrating environment. Surface tension forces form the ejected liquid lumps into spheres that are solidified and then heated in a furnace to form ceramic beads. These porous ceramic abrasive beads can be bonded directly onto the flat planar surface of a flexible backing material or they can be bonded onto raised island surfaces to form rectangular or disk abrasive sheet articles. Abrasive articles having equal sized abrasive beads are particularly suited for lapping and raised island articles are suited for high speed lapping. Non-abrasive equal-sized beads can also be formed using this simple bead manufacturing process, which requires only a very low capital investment.

Bone graft

An improved demineralized bone matrix (DBM) or other matrix composition is provided that has been mixed with a stabilizing agent that acts as (1) a diffusion barrier, (2) a enzyme inhibitor, (3) a competitive substrate, or (4) a masking moiety. A diffusion barrier acts as a barrier so as to protect the osteoinductive factors found in DBM from being degraded by proteolytic and glycolytic enzymes at the implantation site. Stabilizing agents may be any biodegradable material such as starches, modified starches, cellulose, dextran, polymers, proteins, and collagen. As the stabilizing agents degrades or dissolves in vivo, the osteoinductive factors such as TGF-β, BMP, and IGF are activated or exposed, and the activated factors work to recruit cells from the preivascular space to the site of injury and to cause differentiation into bone-forming cells. The invention also provides methods of preparing, testing, and using the inventive improved osteodinductive matrix compositions.

Coprocessor opcode division by data type

A data processing system having a main processor and a coprocessor. The main processor responsds to coprocessor instructions within its instruction stream by issuing the coprocessor instructions upon a coprocessor bus and detecting if the coprocessor accepts them by returning an accept signal. The coprocessor instructions include a coprocessor number and the coprocessor checks this number to see if it matches its own number(s) to determine whether or not it should accept the coprocessor instruction. A data type field within the coprocessor number in the coprocessor instruction also serves to specify one of multiple data types to be used in the coprocessor operation; particular coprocessors can interpret this part of the coprocessor number to determine data type. If the coprocessor supports multiple data types, then it has multiple coprocessor numbers for which it will issue accept signals and then uses the data type field to control the data type used. If a coprocessor does not support a particular data type then it will not issue an accept signal for coprocessor instructions that specify that data type. The main processor can then use emulation code to provide support for that coprocessor instruction.

High data density RISC processor

A RISC processor implements an instruction set which, in addition to optimizing a relationship between the number of instructions required for execution of a program, clock period and average number of clocks per instruction, also is designed to optimize the equation S=IS * BI, where S is the size of program instructions in bits, IS is the static number of instructions required to represent the program (not the number required by an execution) and BI is the average number of bits per instruction. Compared to conventional RISC architectures, this processor lowers both BI and IS with minimal increases in clock period and average number of clocks per instruction. The processor provides good code density in a fixed-length high-performance encoding based on RISC principles, including a general register with load / store architecture. Further, the processor implements a simple variable-length encoding that maintains high performance.

High efficiency constant current LED driver

The present invention discloses a high efficiency constant current LED driver, which comprises a rectification bridge, a PFC main circuit, an isolated DC / DC converter, a PFC controller and a PFC bus control circuit. Since the input voltage is an intermediate PFC bus voltage, which varies with the output voltage of the DC / DC converter. When the isolated DC / DC converter is an LLC resonant circuit, the operating frequency of the LLC circuit is close to the resonant frequency within a wide output voltage range. Thus, the gain range and the operating frequency is narrow, and can enable the constant current module to work with a high efficiency at a wide output voltage range. When the isolated DC / DC converter is a symmetric half bridge, or an asymmetric half bridge or a full bridge circuit, the duty cycle of DC / DC circuit is close to 50% within a wide output voltage range. Thus, the changing range of the duty cycle of the DC / DC converter will be narrow and can improve the efficiency dramatically.

Ultrasonic surgical system

An ultrasonic surgical system utilizes a digital control system to generate ultrasonic drive current for transducers that are located in a hand piece and are attached to a surgical scalpel or blade in the hand piece so as to vibrate the blade in response to the current. The digital control includes a digital signal processor (DSP) or microprocessor; a direct digital synthesis (DDS) device; a phase detection logic scheme, a control algorithm for seeking and maintaining resonance frequency; and design scheme that allows to regulate current, voltage, and power delivered to an ultrasonic thereby a device. Such system allows the power versus load output curve to be tailored to a specific hand piece, which improves efficiency and reduces heat. Further, the components of the digital system are much less sensitive to temperature variations, thereby allowing it to operate with narrow as needed frequency range around the desired resonance in order to avoid excitation of other resonances. Also, the digital system provides increased flexibility in locating the resonance frequency of the blade and running diagnostic tests. The start of a user initiated diagnostic test that requires movement of the blade is caused by operating two of the system switches, which guards against accidental operation of the blade which could be harmful if in contact with tissue and also generate false diagnostic results. In addition, the system has interlock with an Electrosurgical unit so that it is not effected by the electromagnetic interference generated by that unit.
